Jeri Jacquin

On Bluray from director Guo Jian-Yong and HBO HOME ENTERTAINMENT comes two films that are powerful in martial arts and story telling with MASTER OF THE DRUNKEN FIST: Beggar So and MASTER OF THE SHADOWLESS KICK: Wong Kei-ying.

A visit to the Emperor palace has put the Chan family in danger in MASTER OF THE DRUNKEN FIST: Beggar So. Chan, a military scholar visited the royal kitchen with unexpected consequences meeting Lau Pak-Gwai of the Beggar Sect. Now, the Empress Dowager sentences So Chan to a flogging and loss of family property. His family is now exiled to the Heilongjiang Tower as slaves.

All of that because of a jealous man who wanted Chan’s family out of his way especially Lord Su Bao. Ordering them to death secretly, the conspiracy begins. Chan meets a beggar gang who helps him learn the skill of the Drunken Fist to become known as Beggar So. He also meets the Lau’s daughter who he comes to have feelings for.

Now he wants the family and a new found love to know he fights for them!

In MASTER OF THE SHADOWLESS KICK: Wong Kei-ying, Wong is a physician who helps all that come to him. Dealing with the death of his wife, he throws himself into helping as many people as possible.

He sees the suffering of the people with little food and a booming opium business. Trying to avoid the politics around him, he is taken in by the new governor of Canton Wei. That’s when Wong discovers illustrations that teach him the skill of the Shadowless Kick.

Mastering the skill may be the only chance they all have to survive the evil of Governor Wei!

Filmed in Hengdian, China, this film is HBO Asia’s very first Chinese-language production and their first approach to the martial arts genre. The films executive producer is acclaimed Hong Kong director Corey Yuen who is responsible for THE TRANSPORTER and director Guo Jian-Yong choreographed the action of CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE and the first three TRANSPORTER franchise films.

I have become a big fan of the films coming from Asia with its rich story telling and epic feel. The cinematographer is always amazing using the land around the story as another character. The costuming is so stunning and intricate with such contrasting colors that it adds a stunning note to the story telling.

Even the paintings, the cups, vases and furniture add an amazing depth to taking the audience into another time and space. These things are all important for me and those who have come to enjoy the films coming from Asia.

In the end – they both become masters to save those they love!
