PINK FLOYD’S DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER Comes to Digital

Jeri Jacquin

This has been a year of no concerts and that is making some of us a little stir crazy so, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings us joy beyond belief for the early holiday season with PINK FLOYD’S DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER.

In 1965, a bank known as Pink Floyd would show up on the music scene with its own unique sound and in 1967 their album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn with Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright and later joined by David Gilmour.

Their success came as the band created concepts behind its music. The list of albums includes The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and the epic album The Wall that I would see come to the screen in 1982. Trust me when I saw that was a musical experience that I would see over and over again gladly handing over money for a ticket.

Although the band went through division and revision, two more albums came with A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell and The Endless River. Along with these albums came awards, recognition, celebration and millions of fans who, to this day, crank up their radios, CD’s and even vinyl albums to reminiscent of musical times we refuse to forget.

All of what I just wrote is minute because this band has seen its highs, lows, friendships, deaths and a history that is meaningful. The lyrics to their songs hold everything and nothing, depending on the listeners ability to allow every note and word to reach that place Pink Floyd strives to get to.

PINK FLOYDS DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER is a concert that was recorded in 1988 at the Nassau Coliseum in New York. David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright brings their own unique style once again to the stage with ethereal imagery, subtle messages but most of all songs that brought the attending audience to its feet with smiles almost as bright as the light show.

Joining the gentlemen on stage is Jon Carin, Scott Page, Guy Pratt, Tim Renwick and the lovely back up vocals of Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom and Margaret Taylor.

The remastered concert film comes in from its original 35mm to a 5:1 surround sound and its music to the ear. Thrilled at the Bluray (because those colors are going to be stunning) and DVD release, before watching it might I suggest a good sound bar and understanding neighbors because this is the chance to be a socially distant concert goer and get a concert fix all at the same time.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment encompasses motion picture production for television, digital content and theater releases. The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. The songs include: Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Signs of Life, Learning to Fly, Sorrow, The Dogs of War, On the Turning Away, One of These Days, Time, On the Run, The Great Gig in the sky, Wish You Were Here, Us and Them, Money, Comfortably Numb, One Slip, and Run Like Hell.

At a time when music can be the release for all that we are feeling this year, PINK FLOYD’S DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER is just what the doctor ordered. It is familiar, comforting, relaxing to the ears and mind and I cannot think of anything better than that.

Crank it up, sing along and enjoy the show!
