Greed Finds THE UNHOLY TRINITY

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres from director Richard Gray, Saban Films and Roadside Attractions is the story of loss and found with THE UNHOLY TRINITY.

Henry Broadway (Brandon Lessard) has come to say goodbye to his father Isaac (Tim Daly) on his way to the gallows in 1870s Montana. The final words to his son is to find Saul Butler and clear his name in a crime Isaac says he did not commit. Grief stricken, Henry finds his way to the town of Trinity looking for a man he has never seen before to get justice for his father. Right away he meets St. Christopher (Samuel L. Jackson) who seems to befriend him.

Following Gabriel Dove (Pierce Brosnan), Henry mistakes him for Butler and discovers more about the town than he planned. Dove tells the young man to quickly leave before local hot head Gideon (Gianni Capaldi) gets out of control, much more than he already is tracking the Blackfoot woman Running Cub (Q’orianka Kilcher). Gideon blames her for a different death in the town. Having a meal in the salon, Henry meets Rachel (Stephanie Hernandez) and the town is turned upside down.

Sherriff Dove is nowhere to be found as he has gone looking for Rubbing Cub so wife Sarah (Veronica Ferres) tries to calm thing. When he does return and realizes Henry is in trouble, it is time to discover all the secrets being hidden in the town of Trinity because the secrets are dangerous and loom large over all their lives.

Lessard as Henry is a young man unaware of what his father asked of him. He clearly does not have a grasp of how to deal with unsavory men who all have guns and aren’t afraid to use them. Wanting to do right by his father, almost immediately he realizes that there is something more happening in this town. Lessard plays his part in a larger story and does it well, especially playing opposite two big names in the film game.

One of those names is Pierce Brosnan as Sherriff Dove who immediately realizes that Henry was only given a fraction of the story about his father and the town. Keeping the townspeople safe is his ultimate goal, especially surrounded by men who find killing easy. Brosnan’s character is soft spoken and calm even when chaos is happening all around him. Knowing Henry has been misled; it seems almost immediate that he wants to protect the young man from anyone who would harm him. Brosnan is doing what he does best, embracing his role and reminding us that his ease at playing any character is vast.

Jackson as St. Christopher is a bit of a mystery man and when Henry arrives in town, he is quick to share a bit of a rundown not only of the town but how the young man might need to protect himself. It is clear that he, like others, seem to know what Henry doesn’t. Jackson gives us his predictable mash up of ‘is he good or not?’ until all is revealed. That being said there is nothing better than watching Jackson develop a character right before our eyes. He has the fantastic ability to play both good, bad and good/bad characters and in this film, he doesn’t disappoint.

Kilcher as Running Cub has a story of her own and Dove is protective of her. Her role is not a large one but it has its importance. Capaldi as Gideon is as twisted as a bad guy can get in the “Wild West” and it works in the story. Ferres as Sarah is a wife who understands her husband and is a stabilizing force for him.

Other cast include Katrina Bowden as Julia, Beau Knapp as Asa Benton, Tim Montana as Red Benton, Beau Linnell as Butch Benton, Ethan Peck as Sam Scarborough, Dylan Brosnan as Pastor, Chuck Matthews as Charlie, Eadie Gray as Mabel, Paris Brosnan as Thomas, Kelton Cole as the Innkeeper, and David Arquette as Father Jacob.

Roadside Attractions has, since 2003, grossed over $300M and garnered nineteen Academy Award nominations. They have had critical and commercial hits such as MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, BEN IS BACK, BEATRIZ AT DINNER, HELLO MY NAME IS DORIS, WINTER’S BONE and THE COVER as well as so many others. For more information of what Roadside Attractions has to offer please visit www.roadsideattractions.com.

Saban Films was launched in 2014 and has built an impressive slate of high-quality feature films distributed with partner Lionsgate. Films such as SISTER OF THE GROOM, FATMAN and BREACH are part of the wonderful Saban slate, and more information can be found at www.sabanfilms.com.

Director Gray says of shooting THE UNHOLY TRINITY in Montana, “There’s a rawness to the Western genre, more than any other, where it’s really just about survival. The whole point of the Western is that it’s a frontier. When you strip back all of the conveniences and safety nets of modern life, all that’s left is raw emotion and force. No better genre provides that better than a Western.”

He is right, movie goers do love a good Western and a staple requirement is that it be filled with glaring gunmen, rugged good and bad guys, strong women and something to fight more. Well, this film gives all of that and more surrounded by a solid storyline and twists that are a bonus. The cast brings it all together with stellar performances and more than enough guesses to take up the 95-minute running time and I’m all for every minute.

In the end – the mystery brings them all together!

It is all CLASSIFIED

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to VOD & Digital from director Roel Reine, Saban Films and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment comes the twists and turns when it is all CLASSIFIED.

Evan Shaw (Aaron Eckhart) is a CIA agent who is continually on the move. Learning who his targets were discrete ways; Shaw handled each case quickly. Not spending much time thinking about his life, his only friend is Kevin Angler (Tim Roth). It is actually the only person he can talk about a lost love about.

Arriving at his next assignment, a young woman named Kacey (Abigail Breslin) was waiting in his hotel room. What she had to tell him was nothing Shaw could have ever expected. Kacey, an MI6 analyst, tries to convince him that he was actually working for a phantom. Shaw is not convinced and is not going to take just her word for it.

Doing his own investigation, Shaw realizes that something is terribly wrong. He and Kacey decide that it is time to dig deeper into who has been leading Shaw around, but it also answers questions for Kacey. Teaming up, it is time to put an end to the mysteries and those responsible for it all.

Eckhart as Shaw has jumped into the action-star genre following other actors that find second wind to their careers. As this CIA agent, Eckhart is quiet, tough and once he got an assignment, that’s where his focus was aimed toward. Each move he makes takes him in another direction until the only direction left is right into the fray. This is a total action film from start to finish with Eckhart going full bore.

Breslin as Kacey is a young woman who is with MI6 and after learning about Shaw decides to confront him about what she knows. It becomes clear what her motivation is but she also doesn’t have a problem jumping right in with Shaw either. Knowing that whoever is responsible for sending Shaw on missions also holds the key to her life mystery.

Roth as Angler seems to have been a good friend to Shaw. As things begin to unravel, Roth keeps one foot in front of the other to stay away from the gunfire that seems to be headed his way. Roth plays a man who doesn’t seem moved by what is happening around him and doesn’t seem to grasp why Shaw is upset with him. That being said, it doesn’t stop bullets from flying around him!

Other cast include Myles Clohessy as Tanner, Kim DeLonghi as Liona, Baylee toney as Cassandra, Marysia S. Peres as Monica Walker, Mariah Hardy as Sophie, Massimo P. Morana as Steve and Matt Hookings as Antonio Griffin.

Once Kacey enters the picture, his whole life is about to shift dramatically. It is his CIA training that keeps him looking for clues as to who is responsible for lying to him for so long.

Adding Kacey to the mix, the young woman realizes through her job that something has gone terribly wrong and she wants answers herself. The first person to turn to is Shaw and from the moment they meet, someone wants to end their team up!

If you love a good action-thriller, plot twists and satisfying ending, then CLASSIFIED is a film you can enjoy on the home big screen and loud sound bar! Don’t forget a tub of popcorn!

BUTCHER’S CROSSING

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Bluray from writer/director Gabe Polsky, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Saban Films from the novel of the same name by John Edward Williams is the tale of BUTCHER’S CROSSING.

The west is still wild in 1874 when Will Andrews (Fred Hechinger) has decided to head west and experience it all. Joining Miller (Nicolas Cage) on a buffalo hunt, he learns what it takes from a true buffalo hunter taking him to Colorado. Wanting to see it all for himself, Andrews puts up the money for the adventure of a lifetime in Colorado.

Along is Charlie Hoge (Xander Berkeley) to be their camp cook and skinner Fred Schneider (Jeremy Bobb) and neither believe that Miller knows of the place where the buffalo still roam in big herds. When Miller finds the herd, weeks of slaughter begin and Will begins to feel the emotional strain of it all. When Schneider points out that they have more than they can carry, Miller refuses to stop even though winter is on its way.

When a blizzard comes in, the four men must find a way to survive which is the easy part since they are all turning against one another. If that isn’t horror enough, the spring and return to Butcher’s Crossing bring another setback. Will realizes that the romantic notion of the west he once had has turned to dust and Miller’s dreams of his own are equally worthless.

Welcome to the west.

Cage as Miller once again plays a role that he does oh so well, that of a man out of control to the point that no one knows what will come next. The moment his character discovers the large herd of buffalo, nothing else matters, not even the men he is with. The character of Miller doesn’t have much to say but when he says it you had better pay attention. I enjoyed watching Cage get his western chops on film, especially getting to play a character that is so unnerving.

Hechinger as Andrews is a young man who leaves a prestigious college to go out and see the west and all the wild he hopes it will have. Taking his own money to bring that dream to fruition, it is nothing that he anticipated. What he discovers is that there are men, like the ones he is with, that are as unpredictable and dangerous as the land surrounding them. Hechinger brings his character face to face with reality and the emotional toll that all of it takes on the human body and soul.

Berkeley as Hoge is a man who can not deal with what is happening around him and it doesn’t help that the skinner continually harasses him. Yet, he is a man of the wilderness who knows how to deal with it all in his own way. Bobb as Schneider hates that Miller is controlling everything and not listening to reason. He also is a character who seems to enjoy tormenting those around him for his amusement and that will cost him.

The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. First of all, the cinematography of the film, shot on the land belonging to the Blackfeet Nation in Montana, is stunning with its beauty and openness. That lends to the story that Polsky is trying to tell as the scenery is a silent character in the film and in that silence screams. Just absolutely amazing and worthy of praise.

BUTCHER’S CROSSING is the story of four men caught in a situation that won’t resolve itself with ease. Dominating with fear and brutality, Cage’s character Miller leads the cast with an insanity that permeates every frame of the film. Offsetting that brutality is Hechinger’s character Andrews, who just wanted to see the west, discovers quickly that what is in his head, his body can not handle. Dealing with what he is seeing sends him in a tailspin.

This film is well done, well directed and equally stunning visually. It is not filled with emotional music and special effects but instead, a brutal look at a world that none of us could ever comprehend. It also addresses the effects of bison hunting and who has stepped up to save what is left of these powerful animals.

In the end – who is the true savage animal?

BOUDICA: Queen of War

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres, On Demand and Digital from writer/director Jesse V. Johnson and Saban Films comes the story of strength and leading warriors with BOUDICA: Queen of War.

Boudica (Olga Kurylenko) lives a quiet life with husband King Prasutagus (Clive Standen) and her two beautiful daughters in Britannia. Emperor Nero (Harry Kirton) is not happy with the people in that country, especially when learning that they believe a woman warrior is coming. To stop that, Nero orders that no woman will hold a high office or crown while he’s alive.

When the Roman’s make a visit to Britannia, it is clear they are wanting to make trouble. When King Prasutagus visits the other Iceni villages, he is attacked leaving Boudica to be crowned Queen. That doesn’t last when the Roman’s discover this is happening, they make it clear that now she is Queen of nothing and punish her in the most heinous of ways.

Rescued by Cartimanda (Lucy Martin), the village makes it clear that she is their rightful Queen and the Druid (James Faulkner) officiates the crowning once again. At first, Wolfar (Peter Franzen) is not happy believing he has what it takes to lead. Quickly he sees things that are unexplainable and realizes that Boudica has something very special.

What starts out as revenge for her husband turns into Boudica knowing that she must fight for her people and their freedom from the suppression inflicted on them by the Romans. Fight after fight, Boudica shows strength, courage and the power of belief.

Kurylenko as Boudica gives us a character who clearly loves her husband and girls, enjoying their life together. When the Romans invade, and they do invade in every way possible, she has people who depend on the crown she is given. Once realizing she is caught between the dream world and reality, Kurylenko helps to marry the two making the story even more amazing. Given the true history of Boudica, Kurylenko doesn’t hesitate to put her own strength and power into the role.

Franzen as Wolfar is a man who believes he is a strong leader for the people. Not sure he wants to follow the new Queen; it doesn’t take long before he is a witness’ the very reason why Boudica is the not only the right person but the chosen person to lead. Frazen’s character follows orders and even has moments to flirt with the Queen but all in all believes that she believes in their cause and so does he. His portrayal is charming, disarming and ferocious all at the same time.

Other cast includes Nick Moran as Catus Decianus, Leo Gregory as Ciaran, Yarden Toussia-Cohen as Cosmetae, Rachel Wilde (Rosmerta, James G. Nunn as Tamesas and Kris Johnson as Gaius Suetonius Paulinus.

Saban Films was launched in 2014 and has built an impressive slate of high-quality feature films distributed with partner Lionsgate. Focusing on talent-driven films, the company looks at projects in all stages of production to be released across multiple platforms. Films such as SISTER OF THE GROOM, FATMAN and BREACH are part of the wonderful Saban slate, and more information can be found at www.sabanfilms.com.

Jesse Johnson says, “There’s something heart-breaking about Thomas Thornycroft’s statue of Boudica and her daughters in Westminster; the mother and daughters appear to move, breathing as you watch them clinging to the speeding chariot. The placement of the statue beside the Houses of Parliament, just beneath Big Ben gives you a clue to the importance of these three women to this island nation. Looking back, I realize I have been fueled by a deep desire to ensure the audience hears her story and that they understand that what she fought for meant something.”

BOUDICA is the story of a woman who goes against a Roman Emperor and his need to control everything, including the coming of Boudica. Suppressing the people of Britannia, Boudica called upon her people to remember what life was like before the Roman’s invaded and occupied their lands. Freedom and liberty are what all the people wanted and Boudica was going to do whatever it took to give it to them.

Making that happen began when Boudica took her people to Camuldounum and made it clear that nothing or no one would be spared to show Rome that the Iceni tribes were serious. That was only the beginning of her campaigns. Today, sculptor Thomas Thornycroft, encouraged by Prince Albert, created a stunning statue of Boudica and her daughters that still stands today next to the Westminster Bridge.

This film gives a brief look at the life of a woman who experienced a wonderful life, a painful life and a life that made her a warrior!

In the end – it’s a battle she is willing to take on for freedom!

3 DAYS IN MALAY

Jeri Jacquin

Coming from Bluray and DVD from director Louis Mandylor, Saban Films and Well Go USA is the story of past mistakes, coming together and struggling to survive 3 DAYS IN MALAY.

John Caputo (Louis Mandylor) has just been assigned to a remote airstrip in the jungle. Once there, he checks in with nurse Bess (Kelly B. Jones) who goes over his military jacket. Caputo makes a quick rundown of his boxing career, Marine tour and now with the Army. He is checked in and onto the barracks where he sees longtime friend James (Donald Cerrone).

But there is a history between these two men as Japanese forces are slowly surrounding the air field. The past mixes with the death of a friend as James starts feeling it all consume him. Even Reverend Conte (Quinton Jackson) tries to convince James that where they are and what they are doing comes with death.

Caputo is well known by the rest of the platoon with Adams (Ryan Francis), Conroy (Randall Bacon), and Simmons (Randy Wayne) and the accept him readily. On the other end of the compound, Murdock (Eoin O’Brien) is trying to convince General Harmon (Bear Williams) that the Japanese are going to attack and they are not ready.

For three days the men do what they need to do to stop the advancement of the enemy and save as many lives as they can.

Mandylor as Caputo is a man with inner demons that he is controlling. He has a history of mental pain trying to find a place to lay it to rest. Going from the boxing ring to the ring of war, Caputo wants to make the only peace possible and that is with his childhood friend James. On a personal note, I still love the character of Nick from MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING.

Cerrone as James wants to outwardly act like he isn’t shaken by seeing Caputo again. He keeps the conversation casual and light until one peek at his military jacket sends him into a rage. Taking it out on Caputo with boxing gloves, it is clear his friend has no desire for this kind of fight.

Bacon as Conroy takes a liking to Caputo and clearly does not agree with James’ tactics in handling their relationship. Bacon plays his soldier as a straight forward guy who knows what the job is and it’s not fighting each other. Jackson as the Reverand is a calming and strong force for the men and when the time calls for it, he doesn’t mind picking up a rifle and fighting with his comrades in arms.

O’Brien as Murdock is a man who clearly understand what is about to happen and cannot get the higher command to listen. Instead, he fights his way verbally through the ranks and when it all begins to come down, he jumps into fight without hesitation. Jones as Bess is a nurse who doesn’t take any guff from the men but almost instantly has an attraction to Caputo. She takes her job as a nurse seriously and stands up to anyone in her way.

Francis, Wayne and Williams bring the cast full circle and show what friendship, strength and faithfulness to the other men overshadowed the fear that anyone would feel. They bring a sense of camaraderie to the film and that’s important in showing what the men and women went through during with war with Japan.

Other cast include Kelly Reiter as Ellie, Alex Farnham as Jack along with Ron Smoorenburg, Jonathan Samson, John Garrett Mahlmeister, Alexander Winters, Vesse Saastamoinen and Andrey Kasushkin.

3 DAYS IN MALAY is a film not just about World War 2 but of the lives of the men and women during that time. There are stories within stories in the film and much of it is a rift between Caputo and James. Both have past issues and mistakes they are dealing with but James wants to take it out on Caputo whereas Caputo just wants peace with his childhood friend.

Director Mandylor does not sugar coat the horrors of war but instead lets it be known the truth of what war does to human beings. It is a brutal and, at times, shocking act and there is very little time to think about the consequences that come later, James’ inability to deal with his friend Evans death is proof of that.

In the end – it all happens in three days!

He is the SHADOW MASTER

Jeri Jacquin

Currently in theatres and soon to Digital from writer/director Pearry Reginald Teo and Saban Films comes the story of the SHADOW MASTER.

In the ravages of an apocalyptic world, An (DY Sao) is wandering the streets looking for a place to light. Hearing over the radio that a building is looking for a night watchman, An meets Boon-Nam (Craig Ng) who hires him to protect the people living in the building and especially they children.

Benison (Eric Gay Jr.) and his mother Janett (Luciana Faulhaber) try to help An understand what is happening around the building. The young boy is especially afraid for his best friend Dylan (Dylan Walton) and wants An to help protect him.

Discovering the band of terrorist responsible, he is brutally killed. That is not the end of it as something supernatural decides it is not his time and he rises again with powers that will make the world shake. An now knows that his mission in life is something totally different as he becomes the unlikely hero of a city that desperately needs one.

Sao as An is a quiet man who is just looking for a safe harbor to live in. Finding the building needing a watchman, its food and shelter that makes it easy to accept the job. Sao gives us the loan man who is more than he seems. Once he is reborn, there is nothing that won’t stop him from finding those responsible for hurting the children and terrorizing the city. I enjoyed his performance very much and his martial arts definetly makes the film thrilling.

Ng as Boon-Nam sees something in An from the moment they meet. He is a bit of a character but he also understands how the world around him works so the building is what matters. Faulhaber as Janett is just trying to take care of her son in a world that gives up nothing and takes everything.

Other cast includes Layton Matthews as Det. Russells, Brian Le as Samael, Anna Harr as Dewitt, Morgan M. Younge as Charlotte, Dylan Walton as Dylan, Alex Farnham as The Lich Knight, Daniel Mah as Gabriel, Lucy Akers as Lucy, Camilo Gonzalez as Triad, Pearry Reginald Teo as Hanuman, and Dezzaray Stephens as The Oracle.

SHAWDOW MASTER sets up the story of a man who is honestly minding his own business, just trying to survive when the job living with a roof above his head tempts him off the streets. The apocalyptic setting brings the story a starkness with the fear of everyday survival.

Writer/director Pearry Reginald Teo uses the setting to create a world of brutality but, with the help of An, a bit of hope with something supernatural. The martial arts bring the skills and choreography that can be compared with THE RAID: Redemption and ONG BAK.

In the end – his rebirth is their impending death!

THE AMBUSH

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to selected theatres and On Demand and Digital November 1st from director Pierre Morel, AGC Studios and Saban Films is the pain and war with THE AMBUSH.

It is 2018 and the Yemen War has United Arab Emirates Armed Forces at their base on Mocha and preparing for a mission. It is a routine patrol through rugged terrain as Ali Al-Mismari (Marwan Abdulla Saleh), Bilal Al Saadi (Khalifa Al Jassem) and Al Hindasi (Mohammed Ahmed) ride down the road keeping an eye out.

The hills are filled with rebels who would like nothing better than to take down a Humvee. When their truck hits an IED, the barrage of weaponry rains down on their truck. There is no way for the men to get out and their vehicle cannot continue to take hits. As the rebels get closer to their vehicle, they have no choice but to get out.

Radioing out the ambush, drones are sent in to see where the rebels are hiding but sending in choppers to help is going to take time. Other vehicles arrive and are ambushed as well sending the soldiers into survival mode until more help can arrive. They do their duty with their family on their minds but this is what they are trained for!

Other cast include Mansoor Alfeeli as Col. Jamal Al Khatri, Khalifa Albahri as Al Sayari, Ibrahim Almusharaakh as Mansoor, Hassan Yousuf as Abdulla Alblooshi, Abdullah Bin Heider as Col. Almazouri, Salem Altamimi as Sgt. Salem, Saeed AlHarsh as Captain Saeed Al Shehhi and Ghanim Nasser as the Rebel Leader.

THE AMBUSH is a powerful film in that we usually see stories about American soldiers in wars. This is an opportunity to experience war from the view of the UAE soldiers and the intensity of emotion. Hearing them speak about their families and see their friendships is so important because it brings us closer to understanding the complexities from another point of view.

At the same time, the film brings the shock of what war brings and the cost of human life. The anger that brings such violence is not just a United States problem, it is a world-wide problem and war is not the solution. THE AMBUSH has a high anxiety level that stayed that way to the last.

The story is written by Brandon Birtell of FURIOUS 7 fame and Kurtis Birtell responsible for MEDAL OF HONOR. THE AMBUSH is the highest grossing Arabic-language film from the United Arab Emirates. Director Morel says, “The feedback we have received from audiences across the UAE has been overwhelming and I am so proud to have been a part of this fantastic project. I hope audiences continue to resonate with this inspirational story of brotherhood.”

In the end – they will bring their brothers home by any means necessary!

They Can Only DIG

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres and VOD from director K. Asher Levin, Lionsgate and Saban Films comes the intensity of the DIG.

Scott Brennan (Thomas Jane) is upset that daughter Jane (Harlow Jane) has to be tracked down. Along with his wife, they discover the girl is in a local bar. Scott is not happy, and his anger is on the edge, and it leads to devastation for the Brennan family.

Years have passed and Scott is trying to reconnect with deaf daughter Jane, but she is experiencing anger toward her father. Back to his auto repair shop, he meets Victor (Emile Hirsh), a man with a job for him to do for extra cash. At first Scott is not interested but knows the money will help Jane.

Victor tells him to strip down a house that is being taken over for a new housing project. Heading out to the middle of nowhere, the work begins. What Scott and company do not know is that Victor and girlfriend Lola (Liana Liberato) are looking for something very specific. Scott is surprised when they two show up and mayhem begins.

Now Scott must do whatever he can to protect Jane from the gun toting Lola as he pieces together who Victor truly is and what it is he is digging for.

Jane as Brennan is a father who is trying to make up for the tragedy that effected his daughter so dearly. Taking the extra job is a way to get her something she really needs to show that not only is he sorry but wants the best for her. Jane gives us all of that in his character and his role does not physically look like an easy one. Yet, Jane is going to do what Jane does best, take a dangerous situation and keep it moving.

Harlow as Jane is a daughter who has every right to be upset with her father but adds a bit of teen attitude along with it. Going along with her father, things turn into a world she could never have imagined. Harlow portrays all of that rage and fear in her character until she comes to terms with everything that has kept her in a dark place. Well done young lady, well done!

Hirsh as Victor is, how should I put this, dangerously charming? He comes off with charm and a bit of twisted humor but that can turn on a dime. He has no issue with throwing his gun around but even then, he tries to be charming about it at the same time. Just a bit of twistedness to this character with dangerous undertones.

Liberato as Lola is just out and out a psychopath. She has no issue with shooting someone and actually gets upset when she does not get to. Messing with Jane’s mind while holding a gun to her head, she does not break a sweat. Her conscience is clear on everything that she and Victor are doing and won’t apologize for any of it. Wicked, wicked lady!

Shout out to Makana David as Tommy. Trust when I tell you he is the nicest young man and I do wish him every sucess!

DIG has twists and turns yet there are moments of predictability which I do not mind in the slightest. Jane comes on strong as a man who wants to protect his family, one event works, and one does not, and both call for him to keep his head. Harlow Jane’s character puts father Scott through the emotional paces and proves the acting apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

Hirsch and Liberato together are remarkable and dangerous in their roles, and I loved it. They are on equal ground criminally but in such different ways that work beautifully. Charming insanity works as these two actors make it clear through their characters that they are not here to play – they are here to slay.

Grab the popcorn and watch the story unravel with each shovel full of dirt!

In the end – getting out is the deadly part!

GOLD Comes to DVD

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from director Anthony Hayes and Saban Films is the story of a world gone haywire but still knows the value of GOLD.

In the future, the world has turned into one big dustbowl, so much so that people are trying to find work and a place to survive. Arriving to report to the Compound, Virgil (Zac Efron) waits to be taken to his new home. Pulling up with an attitude is Keith (Anthony Hayes) who makes it clear that the ride will cost him and do not mess with the air conditioning.

Wanting a little conversation, Keith asks a few questions and Virgil is not to forthcoming with answers. It is clear from his demeanor that he would just prefer to be left alone. Stopping for the night by campfire, Virgil learns that the desert is filled with noises and hungry dogs.

Driving the next day so Keith can sleep, Virgil is not happy about the heat that is taking over the car and does the one thing he was asked not to – turned up the air conditioning. Keith is furious and the two are on the side of the road waiting for everything to settle down. Virgil walks around but notices something sticking out of the ground – a huge piece of gold.

Keith knows someone with an excavator and Virgil agrees to stay with their find. It may take days, so the antsy Keith gives him a few hints on how to stay alive until he gets back. That’s when things get interesting as Virgil fights each day and each night with very little food and very little water.

Now, Virgil is up against nature and the will to survive for a piece of gold!

Efron as Virgil is a very quiet person who is not interested in talking about where he came from or what has happened to him. His time in the desert is excruciating to watch and a bit frustrating as I found myself yelling at the screen. That being said, Efron has to use emotions, dead eye and body language to tell us everything we need to know about his character. He gives a strong performance about survival and a kind of greed that cannot be easily defined.

Hayes as Keith cannot believe that Virgil is in the territory a day and he makes the find that is truly unbelievable. Agreeing to help dig it out, he tries to stay in contact with Virgil as the days stretch out and will not take any interference with their find. Hayes gives us a creepy character that clearly is only interested in himself and that makes his performance successful.

Shout out to Susie Porter who plays ‘The Stranger’ because she is strong and does not take anything from someone scavenging in her area. I loved her performance and saw her as a way for Virgil to survive and yet, he chose wrong.

GOLD is an interesting film because it is centered around a future that is environmentally broken but then again, so are the people trying to survive. Efron is the epitome of a broken human being arriving in a barren place believing this is all he entitled to for life. Finding the gold, it is as if something awakens in him, the world as it once was – greedy.

Yet, his greed seemed based in survival knowing there could be something better, but his buddy Keith is that kind of character that does not care about anything but maybe living the high life. Watching Efron go into frightening depths of a life shrinking further and further away, when challenged, it is the gold that snaps him back into survival mode.

This film is definetly one that is worthy of conversation for those who see it because I can guarantee everyone will experience something different – but the main topic will be the GOLD.

In the end – for everything he will do anything!

They are Entering HOSTILE TERRITORY

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Bluray from writer/director Brian Presley, Saban Films and Well Go USA comes the story of a father who will not stop the search for his children in HOSTILE TERRITORY.

The Civil War has taken Jack Calgrove (Brian Presley) away from his family, becoming a prisoner, he does not know that his wife has passed away and his children had been labeled as orphans. Taken to a train headed West, the children about to enter territory that is dangerous.

Alice Beggs (Natalie Whittle) is a mother also looking for her child who is on the same train as Calgrove’s kids. Joining forces, they make their way across the territory to find them. What Calgrove does not know is that his eldest son Charlie (Jackson Presley) has found the children and is trying to keep them all alive until the families can be reunited.

But time is not on their side!

Presley as Calgrove goes off to war thinking he is doing the right thing by his family and never could have known what was about to happen. Learning of his wife’s death and his children on The Orphan Train, he is going to do whatever it takes to find them before they disappear into the unknown with no way to find them. Presley gives a tough as nails performance as a soldier and a father during a time when finding his children meant following a dangerous trail.

Whittle as Alice is a former slave who is searching for her own child that is on the train. Coming across Calgrove, it becomes clear that she is not going stand idly when she makes it clear to Calgrove that she is going to follow him to the end. Whittle gives us a strong performance and I enjoyed watching her stand her ground when everyone else wanted her to just stay put.

Presley as Charlie is the older brother who is also a soldier and discovers that his mother has died and has no way of reaching his father. He takes it upon himself to find his siblings and take them home again. This is a brother who is barely old enough to take care of himself in our era but back then, Presley gives us a character who knows what is right and I appreciated that.

Other cast include Emma Presley as Lizzy Calgrove, Olivia St. Peter as Addy, Scott L. Perez as Charles Stanton, Brea Bee as Sarah, Craig Tate as Desmond Richards, Emily Shenaut as Esther, Lorna Larkin as Mildred, Brianna Elias as Ingrid, Tim Cavanaugh as Ed Pagan, Daelyanna Benson as Mary, and Lyndell Chee as Shantu.

HOSTILE TERRITORY is a film that has so many levels – but mostly dedication to family on every level no matter if its mother or father. The love for their children is what guides them to take on territories and peoples who would want to do them harm. Nothing is going to stop them as they edge ever closer to finding who has gone missing.

There actually was such a thing called The Orphan Train which took children from crowded Eastern cities to homes in the Midwest. It is recorded that almost 250,000 children were on The Orphan Train from 1854 to 1929 and most of them were from poor families and immigrants and where they ended up was not always the new life the children anticipated.

This is an interesting telling of one family that was determined to stay together no matter what.

In the end – nothing will stop them!

They are Running Away From THE AVIARY

Jeri Jacquin

Coming from directors Chris Cullari, Jennifer Raite, Saban Films and Paramount Pictures is the story of escaping a nightmare created in THE AVIARY.

Running across the New Mexico desert is Jillian (Malin Akerman) and Blair (Lorenza Izzo) who are escaping from a cult known as Skylight. Leader Seth (Chris Messina) has brought fear to the women as they try and navigate with a map taken from their home.

There are problems almost immediately as they try to navigate as it appears they are going in circles. With minimal food and water, Blair twisting her ankle slows them down even more. Jillian sets up a place for Blair to rest while she heads up a hill to get a better look. Almost immediately she sees something that does not make any sense.

What Jillian does not know is that Blair also sees something that does not make any sense. This is where the tension between the two women begin. They start talking about Seth and what he is capable of and their worry for friend Delilah (Sandrine Holt). More importantly, both women have secrets that they are keeping from one another.

As they walk goes on, so does the frightening visions each of the women are having which makes them not want to trust one another. As if a miracle, they discover a camper with food and water. Jillian discovers there is power in the camper and hooks up a computer taken from Seth when they escaped.

What she discovers changes everything!

Ackerman as Jillian is straight forward and the stronger of the two women. She is consistently propping up Blair trying to get her as far away from Seth as possible. Akerman’s character is put to the test physically and emotionally trying to decern between the reason she left and what keeps trying to pull her back. That being said, Ackerman gives us a strong performance.

Izzo as Blair wants to get away from Seth for more reasons than just the way Seth treats people at Skylight. It is interesting that this character does not hesitate to call out Jillian’s imperfections or reasons for leaving the group but hides what she knows and what she has seen. Izzo gives us a complex character until the complexities are made known.

Saban Films was launched in 2014 and has built an impressive slate of high-quality feature films distributed with partner Lionsgate. Paramount Pictures is the longest operating and remaining major studio in Hollywood that has been on the ground floor of every major development in film. From the advent of motion pictures to the emergence of television, through the digital revolution, Paramount Pictures has been there. During our 100-year history, we have served as the production site for thousands of notable movies and television shows. For more please visit www.paramountstudios.com.

THE AVIARY is a look into how these two women were each affected by a society created and led by a cult leader. Each of the women had different experiences and through their conversations tried to explain why they were even at Skylight in the first place. Blame is thrown out and secrets slowly begin to creep out.

The results are surprising, and the ending is shocking.

In the end – believing is deceiving!

She is Captive on THE LEDGE

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres, Digital and On Demand from director Howard J. Ford and Saban Films comes a climb for survival until reaching THE LEDGE.

Kelly (Brittany Ashworth) and bestie Sophie (Anais Parello) are out in the woodsy mountains to do a little climbing. They meet a band of guys clearly led by Joshua (Ben Lamb) with Reynolds (Nathan Welsh), Nathan (Louis Boyer) and Taylor (David Wayman).

Sitting around the campfire having a few drinks and laughs, things turn serious when Sophie teases Joshua. It is clear he does not find her amusing as a darkness sets over them all. When she goes off, the angry Joshua follows and what happens next is horrendous. Reynolds, Nathan and Taylor are panicked by what has happened and listen to everything Joshua tells them.

Hearing the commotion, Kelly grabs her camera and follows the sounds recording every horrible detail. Joshua hears her and notices the camera yelling for all of them to go after her. Doing her best to get away back to the cabin, she grabs a bag with the camera inside and runs!

Knowing they are only steps away; Kelly does what she knows how to do – climb! Heading up the face of the mountain, she finds a spot that the men cannot get to easily. Settling on a precarious ledge, Joshua is determined to get the camera and does not care who or what he sacrifices to get it.

He did not count on coming up against a strong woman and an immovable mountain!

Ashworth as Kelly is no shrinking violet in this film! Fighting for her life and for the truth about Sophie is all she is concerned with. There is no ego in the mix like those chasing her. Doing what she clearly is good at and has been trained for is what is keeping her on that tiny ledge. I enjoyed her performance if only to see Ashworth’s character was not about to back down AND can climb like a very cute mountain goat. Well done!

Lamb as Joshua is clearly a psychopath immediately into the film. Having total control of those around him, Joshua seems to have made it his life’s work to beat down anyone who gets in his way. Controlling his friends when they know good and well he is insane was the part that had my head shaking. Then again, that’s what you want when playing a character like this and Lamb gave it everything.

Boyer, Welsh and Wayman are the ‘friends’ who continually make excuses and exceptions for Joshua’s behavior. This is a very twisted and dangerous batch of guys who are clinging to a ‘bro code’ out of sheer fear. They know what he is capable of and have experienced it firsthand for years but stopping him is something each of them is unable to do. Going after Kelly is not exactly on their list for an exciting weekend, but neither is dealing with the ugly and frightening Joshua.

THE LEDGE is a thriller from beginning to end that is a frightening and disturbing cat and mouse game with a mountain between them. Is it perfect? No. Are their things that sort of take the viewer out of the story for moments here and there? Yes. Is there wording that I could have done without. Yes. I have yet to see a film that does not make me want to go ‘huuuuummmmm’.

Once Ashworth’s character Kelly is on the ledge, I am hooked because she is mentally stronger and less likely to fall apart than the disturbingly-nutty counterpart Joshua. Kelly thinks things through, one step at a time and remembers all she has learned about being on the side of a mountain. Joshua makes hasty decisions based on anger that someone has control over the situation and has the camera!

Having the second half of the film focused on the power of the mountain and that becomes the only cinematography that matters. Ropes and ranting are the theme of the rest of the film and the story gives a grand lesson in patience comes to those who can handle being on a ledge.

In the end – do not lose your grip!
