KARATE KID: Legends

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres this Friday from director Jonathan Entwistle and Sony Pictures is the story of a boy and two men who want to help the KARATE KID: Legends.

Li Fong (Ben Wang) is a young man studying Kung Fu with Shifu Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) in Beijing. Mom (Ming-Na Wen) is a doctor about to be transferred to New York City much to the dismay of Li who doesn’t want to leave the wuguan or Mr. Han and is still dealing with the loss of a family member. Once in New York, Li and his mother try to settle in and within a few hours he has his first friend Mia (Sadie Stanley) who works in her father Victor’s (Joshua Jackson) pizza joint.

His first days at school provide to be difficult as well when Connor Day (Aramis Knight), the local karate champion, decides to test Li’s ability to defend himself. Mom is none to pleased with what has happened having made Li promise not to fight. She refocuses Li’s attention to his studies by getting him an S.A.T. tutor in Alan (Wyatt Oleff). Li plays along but also makes time to hang out with Mia and making friends with her father. Victor was once a fighter of another kind and now wants to do it again to pay back a debt. After seeing what Li can do, Victor wants Li to train him up!

When things start to go badly, Mr. Han arrives in New York just in time to see that Li is having a difficulties. That’s when Mr. Han sees a flyer for a tournament and knows it will help the young man in so many ways but – he needs help. Flying to Los Angeles, he meets up with Daniel La Russo at the Miyagi-do and explains that he was once very good friends of Mr. Miyagi. Daniel is pleased to hear that his former teacher remembered him fondly to Mr. Han. Now, Mr. Han wants Daniel to do for Li, what Mr. Miyagi did for him.

Now, Li has a chance to mix Kung Fu with Karate and not only show what he is capable of but also the possibility of reconciling his fears – but can he do that?

Wang as Li is a very charming young man with a contagious smile and wonderful sense of humor. Dealing with the past, he agrees not to fight for his mother’s sake but the streets of New York have other ideas. Almost immediately he is defending himself and others around him but the one person who preys on his weakness is the one he must fight in a tournament. He also finds himself with a bit of a crush on the pizza guys daughter. Wang takes up the kid’s mantle and does it proud.

Chan as Mr. Han has a sense of humor and shows that even at the ripe age of 71, he has moves and isn’t afraid to show them. He gives his character the dedication in helping Li knowing what weighs heavy on his heart. Reaching out to another who can also understand the boys’ feelings, Chan is equally as funny and plays up his part and I loved every minute of it. Chan may not have the box office draw as in his early career, but this role was made for him to play and I am thrilled people will see what he has to offer in the Karate Kid franchise (and it erases the 2010 fiasco).

Macchio returns as LaRusso and although happy to meet Mr. Chan, doesn’t believe that he can help Li in a tournament. Yet, LaRusso finds himself on a rooftop explaining karate to Li and training him to fight his biggest adversary – Connor Day! Macchio’s character is so iconic that it seems only fitting that he be there for Li and the support he gives reminds us that in 1984, the same training and support was given to him. He understands the young man and that proves to be so important, especially when it is LaRusso who comes up with the gameplan (which may be familiar as well). Macchio seems to embrace the fact that he is forever superglued to the character of LaRusso and he makes it look so easy. That might also be the fact that he has spent the last six years being part of the Netflix series COBRA KAI (another of my family’s favorites) and returning to the film franchise works so perfectly.

Stanley as Mia is a young girl who is going through something similar as LaRusso’s young love Ali back in the day. She works with her father and finds herself surprisingly attracted to Li. It must be said they are cute together and it works on the screen. Stanley’s character worries for her father and when she begins to understand what Li is doing, joins the support team. Jackson as Dad Victor has a sense of humor and his character wants what is best for his daughter. A friendship also blooms between Victor and Li which was so lovely to see. Jackson gives a nice go-between character of the boxing world and a little bit of kung fu which stuns in the ring.

Knight as Connor is a kid with issues and trusting the wrong person to train him. His bully tactics may work on others but Li refuses to let it stand. Oleff as Alan is a character and made the audience laugh many times. He may be tutoring calculous to Li, but he’s becoming more of a friend than he expected. Wen as Li’s Mom is a doctor who wants her son to stay out of trouble and study to be able to go to college. When she discovers Li is fighting, “Mom’-ness kicks in and she is not happy. She has her reasons for being afraid for Li to get involved in fighting and tournaments which is revealed in the film.

KARATE KID: Legends is more than I expected! First of all, it is so nostalgic, especially for this mom who took her kids in 1984 to see THE KARATE KID and after that nothing was safe in my house. My sons immediately wanted to take karate lessons and that lasted for some time. There was something about the character of LaRusso that was so relatable to kids then and now he is a familiar character that is delightful to see as an adult. Most of us grew up with Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi to the point where lines from the film have become part of our lexicon. “Wax on, wax off” is a prime example and I have seen people try to catch a fly with chopsticks just to see if it was possible.

In this film, the new Daniel is Li Fong and between Mr. Han and LaRusso, Fong gets the best of both worlds and in the process have found a new Shifu and Sensei at the same time. But they aren’t the only friends Li makes. A new kid on the block, as it were, find friendship in Mia, Victor and Alan quickly and it works. The story moves at a fast pace and follows the 1984 formula and I’m not mad about it. It worked then and it works now and yes, it’s probably for nostalgia’s sake that it does and there is nothing wrong with that. KARATE KID: Legends is fun, charming, a bit brutal, and takes on the themes of friendship, life, sad events and loyalty to the love of martial arts.

For all those who long for the simpler times and a film that probably caused them to try and chop a piece of wood in half, then get to the theatres this Friday and find that kid again. Embrace two cultures, a kid with martial arts talent and two men who believed in him. Prepare to have a grand time at the movies this weekend.

In the end – when masters unite a new legacy begins!

THE GARFIELD MOVIE

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres this Memorial Day weekend for the entire family from director Mark Dindal and Sony Pictures is an iconic cat with THE GARFIELD MOVIE.

Garfield (Chris Pratt) is sharing a little more about his life and how it all began for him. From the life of an abandoned kitten on the streets to discovering Jon (Nicholas Hoult) and his first pizza experience. While being comfy at home with his bestie Odie (Harvey Guillen) and having a midnight snack, they are kidnapped by Shar-pei Roland (Brett Goldstein) and whippet Nolan (Bowen Yang).

Taken to an abandoned building, Garfield hears a voice he recognizes, that of his father Vic (Samuel L. Jackson). But that isn’t who is responsible! An angry Persian cat Jinx (Hannah Waddingham) who is upset with Vic and used Garfield and Odie to get to him. Jinx agrees to forgive and forget if they get her the one thing she craves.

Off to Lactose Farms, they meet Otto who is the only one that can help Garfield, Odie and Vic get inside to get the white liquid gold. There biggest obstacle is Marge (Cecily Strong) and she has her own plan because security is everything. It isn’t going to be easy as father and son need to come to terms with the past because the goal is to get home!

Pratt as the voice of Garfield brings in a different vocal vibe with much more talking than most would be use to and at a faster pace. Going up against Jackson’s own brand of witty repartee, it is an interesting matchup. Jackson as dad Vic has his own backstory to tell but first cat-Dad has to get past a very stubborn son. Hoult as Jon is a loving pet-dad who endures more than most pet owners would but he wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Waddingham as Jinx is a total package, think the Siamese cats from ARTISOCATS but in the same fluffy English accented body and you have Jinx. She has a score to settle and Waddingham gets the chance to vocalize it. Rhames as Otto is the strong silent type, for a hot second, and when he finds a reason to shout orders – then the big bull comes out totally.

Goldstein as Roland and Yang as Nolan are Jinx’s henchmen who seem to enjoy their work. What they have going for them is that size doesn’t always play a factor in their scheme of things. Strong as Marge is dedicated to her job and has the set up to prove it. She is tough, smart, quick and isn’t about to let a bunch of animals get the better of her.

Total shout out to Guillen as Odie because, let’s face it, he stole the entire film. Of course, he satisfies every whim his buddy Garfield wants and he seems to know what Garfield needs before he needs it – a true friend. He had me laughing and recognizing that he is the smartest “person” in the film for sure.

Other cast include Dev Joshi as Liz, Luke White as Vito, Alicia Turrell as Ethel, Janelle James as Olivia and Snoop Dogg as the blue Maine Coon.

Sony Pictures encompasses motion picture production for television, digital content and theater releases. The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. So let me get this out of the way, THE GARFIELD MOVIE is different from its previous makings. My favorite is the 2004 version GARFIELD: The Movie because Garfield is voiced by Bill Murray who had the right voice for it, attitude and twisted humor. It is also the version that sent my granddaughter into fits of giggles – two of my favorite things.

The film is full of action, fun, laughs and charm which is important for parents who are looking for entertainment that kids can enjoy. Garfield is the most recognizable cat and is the creation of Jim Davis. He began publishing the comic strip in 1976 and went nationwide in 1978.

As families look for something to do Memorial Day weekend, this is a charming film for the entire family. Grab a big tub of popcorn, sit back, relax and giggle along with the kids for a good time. That’s what an awesome family experience at the movies should be and our furry friends are happy to provide it.

In the end – he gets bigger!

GHOSTBUSTERS: Frozen Empire

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres from director Gil Kenan and Sony Pictures is the next chapter in the adventures of the infamous GHOSTBUSTERS: Frozen Empire.

The Spengler family, along with Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd), are now living in New York in the original Ghostbusters firehouse. Callie (Carrie Coon), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) are together going after the ghosts that are running rampant through New York City. The is only one problem in the form of now Mayor Walter Peck (William Atherton). He has made is clear that he still is aiming to stop the Ghostbusters and close down the containment that holds ghosts!

When Peck discovers that Phoebe is under age, he puts a stop to her being part of the group as well. Upset, she walks to the park where she meets ghost Melody (Emily Alyn Lind) and feels like there is finally someone who understands. At his store, Dr. Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) meets Nadeem (Kumail Nanjiani) who wants to pawn off grandma’s weird collection. Stantz is interested in a brass shaped ball with writing that only Dr. Hubert Wartzki (Patton Oswalt) can talk about.

In the meantime, Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) shows Grooberson and Callie that their overcrowded containment area is about to be expanded with Lars (James Acaster) running things. His money has built another lab where they are finding a smarter way to do it all. But, while all this is going on, something weird is shaking the ground and trying to get out. When the group gathers to fight, some old friends show up like Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) and Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) to put on the suit and make a stand.

The evil spirit Garraka is about to freeze out New York City but there are a few people that aren’t going to let that happen because, after all, who you gonna call?

I have to start with Murray as it is a moral imperative! Returning as Venkman just filled me with so much joy and laughter. There isn’t much that has changed about his portrayal other than he didn’t get enough screen time as far as I’m concerned. Aykroyd as Stantz gives us full on Ray-mode with his insatiable curiosity for all odd things and putting the suit on because nothing says ‘oh yea’ more than having the pack back on ones back. Hudson as Zeddemore may have gotten rich but that didn’t stop him from suiting up and I was all for it.

Rudd as Grooberson is with the Spengler family ghostbusting and having a family life. Making the transition in his life from teacher to parental figure is complicated by ghosts. Rudd gives his trademark performance as the guy who doesn’t ruffle feathers in between ghost captures. Coon as Callie is being a bit of a ghost parent running through the city catching specters but not really addressing family issues other than collecting laundry.

Grace as Phoebe is going through her Spengler-mode upset that the world doesn’t see her more grown up than she really is. Making friends with Lind’s spirit Melody seems like a nature progression for them both, but is it? Potts returns as Melnitz and she brings with her the attitude and the only thing I would LOVE to have seen is when the phone rang, SHE was the one who picked it up and said, “Ghostbusters what do you want!”.

Wolfhard as Trevor decides to take matters into his own hands to go after a green that seems to plague the upstairs. Hudson as Zeddemore returns with a pocket full of money and a way to make containment easier but there is an entity out there that has other plans. Acaster as Lars runs his lab but isn’t immune from what is out there. Oswalt as Wartzki is well versed in what is inside the cute little brass sphere currently in the lab shaking things up.

Shout out to Nanjiani as the new “Keymaster” Nadeem. He gets the chance to wear the iconic metal strainer and go through the weirdness of discovering his family underestimated his potential.

Other cast include John Rothman as the Library Administrator, Chris Tummings as the Police Chief, Logan Kim as Podcast and Celeste O’Connor as Lucky Domingo.

GHOSTBUSTER: Frozen Empire is a trip down nostalgia lane from beginning to end. It seems writers Gil Kenan, Jason Reitman and Ivan Reitman reached into the iconic grab bag to pull out everything but the kitchen sink. Anyone who remembers clearly the 1984 script can quickly see that there are a lot of similarities into the storyline. It is lovely, however, to see that keeping the spirit of Spengler alive runs through the story as well.

This is a full-on special effects film with everything from freezing, electricity, spooks, colanders, mysterious moving objects, talking ghosts, a bit of sliming, a lot of things in the air and destruction of all kinds but that is what happens when ancient entities get a little grumpy. The cast is a big which can test an 8-year-olds ability to keep up. My granddaughter would point and say, “who’s that” followed by “and that person?” until she caught up. She did say, when the film was over that GHOSTBUSTERS: Frozen Empire is now her favorite film so there’s that!

I could not get enough of Murry, Aykroyd and Hudson with Potts coming in from moment to moment because those are the characters I still hold dear. My laughter came from seeing memorable ghosts and small Stay Puft’s (and I would love it if they made those for sale because there would be several on my desk!) that brought me back to 1984 with ease. Talk about joy in this ole heart, these four, along with their misty friends, gave good.

Now, the rest, (insert heavy sigh), I get it, GHOSTBUSTERS has become a generational thing but, to be honest, I think it is time to graciously close the book. Clearly, I am not a fan of remaking iconic and beloved films of the past and trying to resuscitate them with a Thor-like hammer to the chest of an audience who has no other choice when going to the theatres. Go out on a good note and let this be the ending we all deserve.

That being said, take grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, aunts, uncles, cousins and all kids to have a family time at the movies. Laugh, love and remember why we loved them all in the first place! Cheer for the hero’s, cheer for the spirits we love and sing the song that always brings a smile because we know who we are going to call.

In the end – there is only one call you can make!

SPIDER-MAN: Across the Spider-Verse Webs on Bluray

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Bluray from directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) is Spider-Woman and lives on Earth-65. Dad and police Cpt. George Stacy (Shea Whigham) has no idea what his daughter has been doing. She is still dealing with the death of her friend Peter Parker. Now, Gwen meets Vulture and is surprised when Miguel (Oscar Isaac) and Jess (Issa Rae) portal in to help her. While it is happening, Capt. Stacy corners Spider-Woman and his life is about to change as Miguel helps when Gwen needed it the most.

On Earth-1610, Miles Morales (Hameik Moore) is now dealing with his own problems coming from the Spot (Jason Schwartzman). The Spot blames Miles for everything in his life and through their spidey-match. When Gwen reconnects with Miles, they team up with Spider-Man Pavitr (Karan Soni) and Hobie Brown (Daniel Kaluuya). The Spot and Miles share a vision that is going to hurt people and the collider that allows this travel is falling apart.

Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) meets Miles, Gwen, Hobie and Miguel as they piece together what is happening with these canon events. So much so that the history of all the Spiders is causing one thing to happen to another in different times and eventually Peter Parker.

In New York, the city is being overrun by crime and the Spidey-Society find one another to try, it is Miles that is lost and Gwen assembles a team to find him because that is what the Spidey-Society does!

Steinfeld gives her Spider-Woman a strength and attitude that is needed to be amazing for this role. I appreciate what she is doing here and my granddaughter loves the character of Gwen. Whigham as George is dealing with his police work and the shock that follows in his family because of it.

Moore as Miles is a saucy teen who is dealing with the duality of life. One is being Miles the kid who goes to school and has friends etc., the other is being the and only Spider-Man. Moore gives his character the ease of a kid who really should be full of intensity. Isaac as Miguel and Rae as Jess make an amazing animated pair with their mixture of wit and making sure that working together is the most important thing.

Soni as Pavitr has a strong sense of responsibilities of being Spider-Man. It is fantastic to see the representation of this character and done so well by Soni. Kaluuya as Hobie knows what must be done because none of them are going to allow the bad guys to get away with universal craziness.

Schwartzman has moments of wit and sarcasm until he remembers why he is the way he is and then frustration turns to anger towards Spider-Man. Johnson as Parker has moved on with his life and once the Spider-Society comes to him, his days of being Spider-Man are before him.

Other cast includes Mahershala Ali as Aaron Davis, Greta Lee as Lyla, Jorma Taccone as Vulture, Jharrel Jermone as Prowler. Brian Tyree Henry as Jeff Morales, Lauren Velez as Rio Morales.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment encompasses motion picture production for television, digital content and theater releases. The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. MOVIES ANYWHERE gives viewers the ability to download the Movies Anywhere App. With that you can view films by downloading or streaming to your favorite device using a Digital Code. For more information on Movies Anywhere please visit www.MoviesAnywhere.com.

Bonus Material includes Obscure Spiders and Easter Eggs, Deleted Scene: Miguel Calling, I’mma Do My Own Thing” Interdimensional Destiny, Across the Worlds: Designing New Dimensions, Designing Spiders and Spots, Scratches, Scores and the Music of the Multiverse, Escape from Spider-Society, Across the Comics-Verse, Lyric Videos, and Film Commentary.

Also included on DVD are Creating the Ultimate Spider-Man Movie, Raising a Hero and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Cast.

SPIDER-MAN: Across the Spider-Verse is visually stunning which adds such a richness in and of itself. The story is a complex one and filled with twists and turns which is what makes the universe jumps so interesting.

When over 100 animators come together to create a hand drawn affected through computer animation, well, there is going to be eye candy for all. It is such a wild ride through every ‘frame’ of this film and I enjoyed it front start to finish.

Knowing that this is my son’s universe of comics, I asked if he felt it was close to the source material and his face had a big grin. He informed me that seeing it brought him back to a time when he spent hours reading comic books. That tells me the film has truly made him happy. Isn’t that what it is all about?

In the end – they must band together across the spider-verse!

INSIDIOUS: The Red Door

Jeri Jacquin

In theatres from director Patrick Wilson and Sony Pictures is the return of the terror with INSIDIOUS: The Red Door.

It has been nine years since the Lambert’s household was dealing with the terror that struck their home and family. Neither Josh (Patrick Wilson) or his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) remember what happened but that hasn’t stopped the trauma. Since then, Josh and Renai (Rose Byrne) are divorced and the death of his mother Lorraine has caused even more strain.

Josh’s relationship with Dalton just doesn’t seem to work but dad wants to take Dalton to college. Thinking it would be an opportunity for them to bond, father and son only end their trip with an argument. Dalton is an art major and in college he gets the chance to really create. He also meets a new friend, Chris (Sinclair Daniel) who is funny and has a way with people.

Once home, Josh decides to get help for what is happening to him, especially when a mysterious man seems to be haunting him. In the meantime, Dalton begins his art class and a dark and intense drawing starts to cause him to see things as well. Both father and son do not realize that they are experiencing the same thing.

Chris figures out what is happening to Dalton and shares her suspicions. She becomes involved more and more as her life is in danger as well. Once Renai explains to Josh what she knows about it all, it is time for Josh and Dalton to stop ‘the Further’ from becoming part of their lives again.

They must find a way to close the red door!

Wilson as Josh can not seem to figure out what is happening to him. The losses in his life have become part of the problem yet there is something nagging at him. There is something deep pushing him and it is running his life. So much so that he has little to do with a family he once held so dear. Wilson hasn’t skipped a beat portraying Josh and taking on the director’s role, he knows how the story needs to come together and it works really, really well.

Simpkins is back as the college bound Josh who, if he only really talked to his dad, would see that both are experiencing the same thing. When he realizes his art is telling him what is about to happen, it is also telling him about a past he has forgotten and a way to stop more pain from his family. It is great to see Simpkins come back so many years later to take the role once again and see where it could go.

Daniel as Chris begins to see what her new friend is going through and wants to help. It is her curiosity that leads to a YouTube video explaining what Dalton is experiencing. Chris has a way about her and Daniel makes it look smooth as silk, even when she is caught in it herself.

Byrne is back as Renai and she has her own story to tell. Hoping that the lid was put on the events nine years ago, there comes a point when the lid has to come off if she is to save both the man she truly cares about and her son. Byrne’s role is not a large but it is important to the story.

Other cast include Hiam Abbass as Profressor Armagan, Andrew Astor as Foster Lambert, Juliana Davies as Kali, Steve Coulter as Carl, Peter Dager as Nick, Justin Sturgis as Alec, Leigh Whannell as Specs, Angus Sampson as Tucker, Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier and Joseph Bishara as the Lipstick-Face Demon.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment encompasses motion picture production for television, digital content and theater releases. The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. To see what is coming to theaters and to home entertainment please visit www.sonypictures.com.

INSIDIOUS: The Red Door takes one more look at what could happen when you keep secrets in the family. Wilson knew exactly what he was signing up for when deciding to direct as well as reprise his role as Josh. The equal amount of time to both Josh and Dalton’s journey is done very well.

I will admit that I jumped at least twice and hollered at least three times and that’s how I know this film is good. It is not filled with gore and such but instead it reaches into the part of us that loves tension and can’t wait to be scared. I spent more time with popcorn on the outer reaches of my mouth than actually made it in and when leaving the theatre, apologized to the attendants for the circle of popcorn that made it to the floor when I jumped!

If you are looking to revisit the Lambert family, see where they are now and how it will all turn out, then grab a bunch of scary film fans and make it a night to remember.

In the end – face your demons!

The Summer Comedy Starts the Season with NO HARD FEELINGS

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres from director writer/director Gene Stupnitsky and Sony Pictures to start the summer season is the comedy NO HARD FEELINGS.

Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) lives in the family home in the beach community of Montauk. Inherited from her mother, she also inherited the property taxes that go along with it. Working as a bartender and Uber driving, Maddie is keeping her head just above the water line. That is until her car is repossessed and now, she is getting around via another set of wheels.

Hanging out with friends Sarah (Natalie Morales) and Jim (Scott MacArthur), they find a Craigs List posting from parents Allison (Laura Benanti) and Laird Becker (Matthew Broderick) offering up a car if someone can bring their college bound son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) out of his shell.

Meeting the parents, everyone is clear on what is expected of Maddie and she embraces the challenge. Dressing up for her new part, Maddie goes to visit Percy at the local animal shelter and she pours it on. Percy does not seem moved by all the candy she is throwing his way and Maddie’s ups her game.

Seeing each other again and again, Maddie and Percy begin to learn about each other but it doesn’t mean that Maddie has given up on getting the car. That being said, she does start to really see Percy and what an amazing young man he is. The problem is the one big secret she is keeping is the one big secret that could hurt them both in ways she couldn’t imagine.

Lawrence as Maddie brings the comic relief in jaw dropping and hysterical ways. She is the life of the film bringing slapstick and one-liners faster than a tourist eating a lobster roll. Maddie clearly hates the invasion of the rich into Montauk so agreeing to crack the shell of one for a car doesn’t seem like a stretch. Lawrence clearly took a role that tested her comedy chops and she made it look easy.

Feldman as Percy is a young man who is either in his room or at the local animal shelter volunteering. His parents are worried because he just doesn’t seem to be enjoying life. Feldman gives his character so much range between quiet to entertaining with everything in between but deep within his portrayal is a young man with his own story to tell.

Benanti as Allison is, I think, the reason that Percy is as Percy is. She has all the signs of a mother who says she wants her son to come out of his shell but does nothing to have made that happen. Broderick as Laird is the dad who really wants her son to experience the same fun he had growing up, maybe a little too much fun. It’s like Ferris Bueller grew up and can’t believe his son has no Bueller in him! Hilarious!

Morales and McArthur as friends Sarah and Jim try to keep Maddie out of trouble and made me laugh in the process of doing it. Morales gets a chance to show who is boss in the marriage and takes Maddie just as she is. McArthur is a husband who just needs to stay in the ocean (you’ll get it) but he is sweet in his own way.

Other cast include Kyle Mooney as Jody, Jordan Mendoza as Crispin, Hasan Minhaj as Doug Kahn, Amalia Yoo as Natalie, Alysia Powell as Fern, Quincy Dunn-Baker as Travis and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Gary.

Sony Pictures encompasses motion picture production for television, digital content and theater releases. The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. To see what is coming to theaters and to home entertainment please visit www.sonypictures.com.

NO HARD FEELINGS breaks the ridiculously sad film cycle as of late. It brings laughs, jaw drops, hilarity and just a good time to theatre seats. That translates to starting off the summer season the best way possible. This is the film that brings groups together to experience it together and laugh all the way out the theatre door.

Lawrence brings her own brand to the film and there is a particular scene where I’m not sure if she’s an MMA fighter or a clothing aficionado but I do know I couldn’t stop laughing and neither could the audience. In the midst of it all, Lawrence gives her character a bit of heart and warmth which just adds to the likeability of her character. Feldman is trying to see the world through Maddie’s eyes and let me just say his interpretation almost caused me to shoot soda out my nose!

The premise is not all that new but then again there is no need to reinvent the rom-com wheel. Instead, this is just a fun time at the theatre with a film that doesn’t need to be dissected nor explained to the point of conspiracy theories. The only action and big explosions are the hilarious ones brought on by Lawrence and Feldman.

It is popcorn, friends, humor, fun and reminiscent of a time when all of that was important when going to the movies.

In the end – pretty and awkward!

THE WOMAN KING

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to 4K Ultra HD, Bluray and DVD from director Gina Prince-Bythewood and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is the story of THE WOMAN KING.

It is 1823 in West Africa and General Nanisca (Viola Davis) lives in the kingdom of Dahomey. As the leader, she takes the group of women warriors known as the Agojie, to free Dahomean women who are taken by the Oyo Empire. Their motive is to sell the women to slavers.

King Ghezo (John Boyega) is outraged and knows it will be war against the Oyo. Preparing, Nanisca begins to train a new batch of women who want to be Agojie warriors. Among these is Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), a young girl who refuses anyone that her father wants her to marry. Fed up with her defiance, he drops her off at the gates of the Agojie training camp. Immediately, Nawi becomes friends with Izogi (Lashana Lynch) who is very close to Nanisca.

The Oyo are not done with the Dahomean people as Santo Ferreira (Hero Fiennes), a Portuguese slaver, is working with General Oba Ade (Jimmy Odukoya). Nawi learns from her friendship with a young Malik (Jordan Bolger), that the Oyo plan to attack and she tells Nanisca. Nanisca has a few secrets of her own to tell Nawi about a time she was captured by Oba and the terror she endured.

Nanisca and the warriors attack the Oyo but Nawi and Izogie are captured and put on the market. Nanisca is told by King Ghezo to stand down but she makes it clear that she is not going to leave Nawi in the hands of those who will harm her.

Now, the Agoji and General Nanisca are about to show what courage and determination look like!

Davis as Nanisca is dedicated to training and fighting for her King. Training the new women is important and makes it clear how they work together as a team and the importance their history. Davis gives us a strong character with moments of real emotion and strength but then again, that is exactly how we have come to see this amazing actress.

Mbedu as Nawi is equally as strong as a young girl who will not be tied to domestic life. Being dropped off with the Agojie becomes the focus she needs to starting a new life. Mbedu’s performance is full of defiance and it makes for such an appealing character to watch from start to finish.

Boyega as the King is basically a leader who wants to do right by his people. Realizing Nanisca is a strong female presence for his people, even if he forbids her to do things, he also knows she is going to do what’s right.

Bolger as Malik is a young man who understands the old kingdom and the new slavers. Knowing what is right and wrong, his friendship with Nawi allows him to do what’s right. Odukoya as General Oba Ade shows the attitude and oppression of slavers which is a rough role to take but important at the same time.

Other cast includes Sheila Atim as Amenza, Masali Baduza as Fumbe, Jayme Lawson as Shante, Adrienne Warren as Ode, Siv Ngesi as Migan, Angelique Kidjo as Meunon, Zozibini Tunzi as Efe, Makgoso M as Iniya, Thando Dlomo as Kelu and Julian Tennon as Moru.

THE WOMAN KING is a thought-provoking look at a time in the history of African slavery. To see the amazing Agojie come together with a single goal of protecting a kingdom, its people and fighting against slavery on their own front.

Davis leads a cast that is strong and as fierce as the warriors they portray. It is a story of strong connections, family, love, and knowing that everything they believe in deserves to be protected and cherished.

In the end – inspired by true events!

Season Six of OUTLANDER is Here

 Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Bluray and Digital in its sixth season is the STARZ epic and successful series OUTLANDER from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

On the homestead of Frasier’s Ridge, Claire (Caitriona Balfe), Jamie (Sam Heughan), Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) are trying to get past the episode of Claire’s brutal kidnapping. Coming up the road is their next challenge as a man from Jamie’s past, Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones) is looking for a place to live peacefully.

Jamie is not sure at first, but Roger already gave permission for them to begin building. They family also meets Tom’s daughter Malva (Jessica Reynolds) who takes a fascination with the doctoring Claire does and son Alan (Alexander Vlahos). Also, Jamie is asked to become a go-between for the settlers and the Native Americans.

Fergus (Cesar Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle) are having their own issues as Fergus cannot forgive himself for what happened to Claire and finds solace in a bottle leaving Marsali in a physically dangerous place. Ian (John Bell) is still trying to bring his Scottish world to mix with the Native American world he has come to embrace. The story of why he is back at Fraser Ridge is a tale of love, sadness and a fierce protection of Claire and Jamie.

Malva becomes a student of Claire’s which comes in handy seeing her father finally agree to a surgery for his hand, but it has consequences. She also learns about ether and what it can do not knowing that Claire is using it for different means. Roger has been helping Christie’s people and even helps with the church services. He also has a feeling that perhaps it is time to look into Divination school with Bree’s blessing.

Then, Claire and Jamie’s world comes undone as Malva makes an accusation against Jamie that is going to cost them everything. Trying to decide what to do becomes a moot point when what happens to Malva causes an uprising, a gunfight and an arrest of both Claire and Jamie. The surprise is that Christie agrees to go with the Fraser’s for their safety, but it proves to not be enough.

Those that are trying to keep Claire and Jamie apart clearly do not know their history!

Balfe as Claire has brought another amazing season to the OUTLANDER series. Trying to get over the brutal kidnapping, she keeps herself busy as much as she can but there are memories that just will not let her be. Claire also realizes that dates from history are coming close and that the time at Frasier Ridge is about to change forever. What she didn’t count on was Malva, innocent in face, wicked in heart – that describes it perfectly. Balfe shows even more, this season, Claire may be strong, but she also has the same human frailties.

Heughan as Jamie continues to be the strong influence on Fraser Ridge. He tries to keep everything as fair as possible but will not tolerate anyone trying to destroy his family. Staying political without getting arrested, Jamie can not sit idly by while the world needs as many people to speak up as possible. Heughan has come a long way starting out as a wild young Scotsman to this mature statesman Jamie. A man who clearly still love his wife madly and will do anything for those he considers family.

Skelton as Bree returns as a young woman who is using her future knowledge to make life easier for those around her. It may make Roger a tad uneasy because it seems Bree has found her niche. When strangers come around, she wants to help but also, like Jamie, keeps an eye out for something to be uneasy or wrong. Skelton shows Bree as such a strong woman, and I love that about this character.

Rankin as Roger is trying to find his place. He does what he can where he can but then unexpectedly finds solace in speaking at Christie’s church. When he decides that perhaps it is time to consider Divination school, he proposes it to Bree thinking she might not be receptive. He is joyous to find out that his choice going forward is supported but it means leaving Fraser’s Ridge for a time. Rankin is such a charming character; I cannot imagine any other actor making this role so wonderful.

Jones as Christie has a past with Jamie and it is always bubbling on the surface between the two men. That being said, after Claire helps him, he begins to see them both in a different light. Even when Malva has her problem, he wants to oddly protect the Fraser’s. Jones gives his character a stubbornness that it totally outward and Claire sees through it which is probably why he enjoys her company.

Reynolds as Malva is just sweet on the outside and not so sweet on the inside so what happens to her is not a surprise. She attempts manipulation and when that does not work, she goes straight for exploiting situations in her favor and causing so much harm to the Frasers. Vlahos as Alan caught me off guard for a moment. I kept thinking ‘where have I seen those lovely eyes before’, even when he spoke, I didn’t recognize the voice. It finally hit, Phillipe from the series VERSAILLES. I was thrilled to see him once again and on the opposite end of luxury, his character has issues that are not all out yet I’m thinking.

Domboy as Fergus spent the season unable to forgive himself for what happened to Claire. Running the distillery, he finds his own solace in drinking, and it is having a dangerous effect on his family. Domboy shows such sorrow that its heartbreaking. and Lyle as Marsali is trying to understand her husband’s pain but also dealing with a fourth pregnancy that has a difficult outcome for this couple.

Bell as Ian is absolutely fantastic in this series. I have enjoyed so much watching his character grow in such unexpected ways. He is a staple of Fraser Ridge but not always in an upfront way. He is aware of surroundings and has such a keen eye for things going wrong. What we learn this season is that Ian has a story that needs telling and in doing so manages to embrace two cultures that he loves. Bell gives such an awesome performance time after time, and he is such an important character for OUTLANDER.

Other cast include Caitlin O’Ryan as Lizzie Wemyss, Robin Scott as Germain Fraser, and David Berry as Lord John Grey.

Sony Pictures Classics brings television, digital content, new entertainment services, independent films and technologies to viewers. Such films as GREED, THE BURNT ORANGE HERESY, THE CLIMB, CHARM CITY KINGS, I CARRY YOU WITH ME and THE FATHER are just a few of the current and upcoming releases. For more information on what Sony Pictures Classics has to offer please visit www.sonyclassics.com.

OUTLANDER Season Six brings more of the life that Claire has come to embrace with Jamie and her family. The ending of last season was so sad and horrible that had lasting issues for them all, but mainly Claire.

The series is getting closer and closer to a time in history that Claire, Jamie, Roger and Bree all know is going to change things, but they are not sure how. Instead of focusing on that (as much as I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it), they are taking care of more people moving to the Ridge, Indian issues, lies, deceptions, rumors and the stories we didn’t know until now.

Once again, OUTLANDER is a period piece, so I have been all in since season one. I embraced every part of the story being told and hated when the seasons were over. But, as a fan first, I can tell you that all the fans I know of the show are patient and want the series to end in a good place and in fairness to the characters.

The costuming is amazing, the settings are what one would expect of that time period and the actors have made each character they portray their own and we would expect no less. It is clear that Balfe and Heughan have given us Claire and Jamie’s journey and have done it so thoughtfully, wonderfully and, can I add, it looks like they have enjoyed it (even in the tough scenes).

This is a series worthy of binge watching and having season six in your own home entertainment library makes that all possible!

In the end – they are in the heart of the storm!

Coming to Bluray is WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Bluray, DVD and Digital from director Olivia Newman, Hello Sunshine and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is a story of love and betrayal WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING.

Kya Clarke (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is a young woman who has lived a pain filled life. As a young girl, she watched her family fall apart at the hands of her Pa (Garret Dillahunt). After abusing his wife and family, each of them slowly escaped leaving Kya behind.

Seeing what has happened to Kya are local store owners Jumpin (Sterling Macer, Jr.) and wife Mabel (Michael Hyatt). Then Kya is left alone to raise herself in the marsh and bayou outside of town. With no social skills and a fear of everyone but the store owners, Kya lives in her own wonderful creature filled world of sight, sound and art.

Now a young woman, Kya has been discovered by local boy Tate (Taylor John Smith) who brings her feathers. Slowly they get to know one another, and Kya finds love for the first time as does Chase. The town is talking and even Chase’s father offers a small warning knowing that his son has plans for his future.

Chase finally tells Kya about his plans, and she waits for his return on a designated day. When life changes things, Kya meets Chase (Harris Dickinson) who seems infatuated with the infamous ‘marsh girl’. Also, all her drawings and works are finding their way into bestselling books!

But Kya is always waiting for the other shoe to fall and when it does, lives are changed, lies and truths criss-cross and the ‘marsh girl’ fights for her life with the help of Tom Milton (David Strathairn).

Edgar-Jones as Kya brings everything to her character. There is innocence, abandonment, suspicion, desire to be loved, fear, sadness and knowing when to say nothing and observe. I enjoyed that very much about the portrayal of this character. Kya’s journey is one that is symbolically relatable in many ways because we all have, at one time or another, felt everything she feels. Well done!

Smith as Tate is a young man who sees Kya for exactly who she presents herself to be. He has seen only a small dose of her childhood but knows it is enough to cause her uncertainty. Not pushed by how the town’s people see her, it is his own future that causes a rift. Smith gives his character an equally tender heart.

Macer, Jr. as Jumpin is a man who feels a connection to the young Kya and a need to protect her and keep those that are trying to change her at bay. Marcer, Jr. exudes in his character an amazing example of a descent and devoted human being. Hyatt as Mabel is the loving mother-figure in Kya’s life but never let it be said that she does not have an opinion on life nor afraid to express it. I just love Hyatt’s portrayal of her.

Dickinson as Chase is the town boy who seems to have it all and yet knows he has to follow what his parents want. Even with that, there is a darkness that slowly shows itself and Dickinson supplies the creepies I got watching this character unfold his own story.

Strathairn as Milton is a man who sees a young Kya and never forgets how the town not only saw her but continued to see her. There was never any question that he would look out for the young woman and Strathairn’s portrayal is that of a man who can relate to Kya. Dillahunt as Pa has issues brought on by his own pain and instead of dealing with them, he becomes everything those around him fear. It is a powerful portrayal.

Other cast include Jayson Warner Smith as Deputy Joe Purdue, Ahna O’Reilly as Ma Clarke, Eric Ladin as Eric Chastain, Luke David Blumm as Young Tate and Jojo Regina as Young Kya.

Special Features include Adapting a Phenomenon, Creating the World, Women in Focus, 14 Deleted & Extended Scenes and Lyric Video “Carolina” by Taylor Swift.

Where the Crawdads Sing is a novel written by Delia Owens in 2018 and as of December 2019, over 4.5 million copies of the books were sold. Topping The New York Times Best Sellers list, it also made The New York Times Fiction Best Seller in 2020. By February 2022, the novel spent over one hundred and fifty weeks on the best seller list.

The film is very subtle in its telling and moves at a pace conducive to Kya’s surroundings. Everything is taken in small doses, just as Kya’s awakening to the life around her comes does. Using the marsh and bayou as a backdrop to tell this story makes it a living and breathing part of the film.

What I appreciated most about it all is that it follows Kya’s life from childhood to adulthood. The experiences this young girl has forms a woman who is such a mixed bag of emotions, but they are hers, each and every one with no apologies and no excuses.

The cast holds up the character of Kya but also have their own story to tell and the part they play in the young woman’s life. This is a film that should not only be seen, but experienced.

In the end – secrets are buried just beneath the surface!

It is Comedy with a REAL GENIUS

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to 4K Ultra HD, Bluray and Digital from director Martha Coolidge and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is time with a REAL GENIUS.

The very young Mitch Taylor (Gabriel Jarret) is about to enter the prestigious Pacific Technical University under the tutelage of Professor Jerry Hathaway (William Atherton). He wants another kid genius, Chris Knight (Val Kilmer) to work with Mitch in the field of laser physics. Mitch is thrilled to work with Chris but discovers quickly that Chris would rather irritate the powers that be than make the powers.

What they don’t know is that Professor Hathaway has been given a project by the CIA to create a laser weapon that could hit a target from outer space and now time is running out. He begins to put pressure on Chris, Mitch and dealing with lacky Kent (Robert Prescott). Mitch also falls for the cute and sweet Jordan (Michelle Meyrink) and Chris looks to closet student Lazlo (Jon Gries) for advice.

The only way to get what he wants; Hathaway threatens Chris that he will fail and keep him from graduation. Kent is a little jealous and plots to ruin Chris and Mitch’s’ hard work! Working out the kinks, the laser works, and the gang celebrates except Lazlo asks the big question of ‘what do they need something like that for?’

Now realizing that they might have been used by Professor Hathaway, Chris, Mitch, and Jordan have a plan of their own and they need Kent to help – whether he knows it or not!

Kilmer as Chris is hilarious, and his comedic timing is impeccable. One moment he is saying a line with perfection and then his face does a double jump and he’s on to the next thing. Seeing the film in 80’s, I loved it then and I love it even more now. It is because of Kilmer’s performance giving us fun and intelligent adventure.

Jarret as Mitch is a great sidekick to Kilmer’s Chris but, he is also a force to be reckoned with on his own. Starting out as a shy, genius star struck student, he is quickly transformed into a self-assured man on a mission. Jarret gets a chance to show his own chops and it works.

Meyrink as Jordan is as smart as everyone else and has her own quirks just like everyone else, so she fits right in with Chris and Mitch. Meyrink gives us a self-assured intelligent girl who has moments of insecurity that are not a surprise. Gries as Lazlo is so adorable, I can’t hardly stand it and his reasoning behind contests is solid and I like it.

Prescott as Kent just the comic relief on a whole other level. The teeth implant is pure genius and how Prescott portrays this character is just amazing. He’s an inept bad guy who doesn’t know he is. Atherton as Professor Hathaway proved himself the bad guy from start to finish. He has done it again and again in films because, well, if you are good at it then why not?

Other cast include Mark Kamiyama as Ikagami, Ed Lauter as David Decker, Louis Giambalvo as Major Carnagle, Severn Darden as Dr. Meredith, Beau Billingslea as George, Joanne Baron as Mrs. Taylor, Sandy Martin as Mrs. Meredith, Dean Devlin as Milton, Yuji Okumoto as Fenton, Deborah Foreman as Susan Decker and Patti D’Arbanville as Sherry Nugil.

The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. 4K Ultra HD Special Features include Feature scanned from the original camera negative and presented in 4K resolution with Dolby Vision, reviewed and approved by director Martha Coolidge, All-New Dolby Atmos and 5.1 audio, reviewed and approved by director Martha Coolidge and Original Dolby Stereo.

Bluray Disc Features include Feature presented in High Definition, sourced from the 4K master, 5.1 Dolby Stereo Audio, “Balloon Chair” Deleted Scenes and Raw Takes Montage, TV Version of the Film and Feature Commentary with Director Martha Coolidge.

REAL GENIUS is a member in good standing with the 80’s films that have become part of our lives. Starting with my generation to my kids and now my grandkids. They get to see how much fun films were once upon a time.

Filled with humor, gags, sidekick action, jokes and so much fun, this film is everything and every reason we went to the movie theatres. I took my kids three times to see REAL GENIUS and they still love it today.

Add REAL GENIUS to your own home entertainment library because it would not be complete without it!

In the end – you need brains to act this crazy!

It is the Return of COBRA KAI with Season 4

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from Netflix and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is the next season of the hit series COBRA KAI: Season Four.

Daniel (Ralph Macchio) is working with his group Miyagi-Do and Johnny (William Zabka) is working with his group Eagle Fang with one single goal – deal with Cobra Kai. The two men are not exactly agreeing on the best way to do that. Johnny is dealing with another issue as well, a woman from the past has returned – Ali (Elisabeth Shue).

Kreese (Martin Kove) is also loading up Cobra Kai when he asks Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) to come and help him train his students but living a different way, Terry declines but there is an itch for the past. Daniel decides to ask Johnny if he wants to team up the two dojos but there egos once again get in the way. Robby (Tanner Buchanan) decides to join Cobra Kai and gives away trade Miyagi-do Karate secrets in order to win. Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) comes up with a winning idea.

Daniel is shocked to learn that his son Anthony (Griffin Santopietro) is not being bullied, but the bully! Daniel and Johnny decide that maybe its time they try to understand one another and maybe even understand their different way of teaching their students. Daniel invites Johnny, Carmen (Vanessa Rubio) and Miguel (Xolo Mariduena) to their home for dinner to talk about things. The idea is for students from both dojos learn from one another.

A bullied Kenny goes to Kreese for help but is rejected as ‘weak’, but Robby wants to help. Johnny is not happy that Daniel has taken an interest in Miguel and Kreese introduces his students to Terry as a new sensei. Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) and Sam (Mary Mouser) see Tory (Peyton List) at her place of work which frustrates her. Finally, there is a face off between Terry and Kreese and Daniel and Johnny.

The confrontation shakes Daniel, and he tells Johnny about the history between the two. Johnny tries to help Daniel, but he doesn’t want to deal with it. After a run in with Cobra Kai and a match between Daniel and Johnny, the upcoming tournament is hanging in the balance.

All-Valley board decides to add some things to the tournament and finally has a girl’s division. The only one not happy about it is Eagle Fang because they don’t have any girl members. That is until they find Piper (Selah Austria) but she joins Cobra Kai instead. Johnny finally tells Miguel about his relationship with Carmen but Miguel surprises him instead.

Both Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang are having issues with the students whether it be in fighting or personal issues that are just weighing them down. Over at Cobra Kai, Kreese begins to think that perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to bring Terry back! It’s prom time as everyone pares up but tensions flare up. Worse, Terry does the unforgiveable to one of Cobra Kai students.

The All-Valley Tournament is brutal as each of the dojos go against one another and notices Miyagi-Do technique. Trying to talk to Robby does not help. Anthony also attempts to make amends to Kenny but is met with fists instead. When the tournament comes down to it, Daniel tells Johnny that perhaps they should mix up their styles and call it ‘Miyagi-Fang’. Once again, Cobra Kai is up to no good as Terry encourages dirty fighting and bribing referees.

Daniel turns to someone that might help them!

DVD Bonus Features include Deleted Scenes, Blooper Reel and Karate Dad Featurette.

The cast of COBRA KAI is amazing and this series has captures the world’s attention and my own family as well. Of course, we would be interested, you’d have to be from another planet not to know the 1984 wave that was THE KARATE KID followed by more films. Then, the wave passed, and the kid was reduced to a gawd awful remake (which we won’t talk about here).

Then, in 2018, something wonderful happened! The first season of COBRA KAI made its way onto big and small streaming screens everywhere. Netflix caught on and brought it on board their slate of shows and it has just exploded. Why? Because no one gets to mess with the 80’s generation and our beloved movies and characters.

Having Ralph Macchio and William Zabka lead the way, a new generation gets to geek out with those of us who lived the viewing dream! These two actors have brought back the story and we do not even care that they have aged because, lets be real, haven’t we all? There issues are from the past but, as each season grows, their hard-headedness gets in the way from the one thing they need to grasp – they are actually on the sane side!

Bringing Kove as Kreese and Griffith as Terry back means it is a two-two fight. The kids also have a say in what is happening in their own lives and find out that sometimes what is going on is hard to know. The face kids show out in the world is not necessarily the real face of what is going on at home and in their lives.

So prepare to binge and catch up with COBRA KAI Season 4!

In the end – the Karate Kid saga continues!
