Back in Las Vegas again for CinemaCon 2026 at Caesars Palace wastes no time gathering theatre owners in the Dolby Colosseum. Taking the first slot of presentations is Angels Studios and their announcement of their plan to release ten films this year.
Beginning with THE BRINK OF WAR, it is the story of the 1986 US and Soviet Union Reykjavik Summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev played by Jeff Daniels and Jared Harris. Director Michael Gunn and cast include Guy Burnet, Aya Cash, Hope Davis, and Branka Katic is due in theatres August 14th. One of my favorite directors, Scott Waugh, has the film RUNNER coming to the screen with Owen Wilson and Alan Ritchson. It is the story of an ex-soldier who ends up in trouble with the cartel while trying to make medical deliveries for those in need. It is due in theatres on September 11th.
The 1947 John Wayne film ANGEL AND THE BADMAN is going to see new life when director Julio Quintana brings a new look to the screen. The cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Zachary Levi, and Neal McDonough. A wounded outlaw is taken care of by a Quaker girl. The film is due in theatres in October. Director Mark Waters brings the film HERSHEY to theatres in November. Finn Wittrock stars in a film about the chocolate maker in the early years. Nice way to welcome the holiday season.
Directors Ben & Joel David Smallbone bring an American Revolutionary War film to the screen with DRUMMER BOY. This is another November release. Other films due for release are ANIMAL FARM from Andy Serkis, due in May. YOUNG WASHINGTON tells the story of a young George Washington with a large cast including William Franklyn-Miller, Mary-Louise Parker, Ben Kingsley, and Kelsey Grammer. Finally, in December, Alejandro Monteverde’s ZERO A.D. brings a biblical story with the cast of Deva Cassel, Ben Mendelsohn, Jim Caviezel, and Sam Worthington.
Sony Picture Classics brings a sizzle reel showing why their 166 Oscar nominations are a standout. VP of Sales, John Z. Shahinian, is there to not only speak on the Sundance films such as BEDFORD PARK and THE ONLY LIVING PICKPOCKET IN NEW YORK, but he also announces the trailer for BITTER CHRISTMAS from Pedro Almodovar. For something different, the thriller UNIDENTIFIED is a story of a woman who intends to solve the murder of a young girl. It is a Saudi thriller from Haifaa al-Mansour.
Studiocanals CEO Anna Marsh talks about the partnership between them and Universal, Sony, and A24. First out of the gate is PADDINGTON 4, which is still in development. Also coming is PIPPI LONGSTOCKING, MR. MAN, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, and THE HOWLING. All of these are books and films I grew up with, so I’m interested to see which direction each of these takes.
Coming to theatres in September is the world's favorite four-legged cotton-ball with SHAUN THE SHEEP: The Beast of Mossy Bottom. The film EVERYBODY WANTS TO F**K ME shows Taron Egerton being followed by women who seem to want him. Also, Andrew Scott plays an actor with AIDS in ELSINORE. Danny Boyle shows the first look at the film INK with Jack O’Connell and Guy Pearce, showing the story of media moguls Larry Lamb and Rupert Murdoch. INK is due in 2027.
Sony brings their slate beginning with SPIDER-MAN: Brand New Day from SONY has Peter Parker dealing with memory problems of Ned and MJ. SPIDER-MAN: Beyond the Spider-Verse talks of the “final chapter” of Miles’ story. Prepare for Miles to meet Prowler-variant! JUMANJI: Open World is going to be fun around the holidays. The cast is back for more adventures and onstage is Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan.
Just when
you thought it was safe, Zach Cregger teases the reboot of RESIDENT EVIL coming
this September. Announcement made to look forward to BLOODBORNE, HELLDIVERS
with Jason Momoa, THE SOCIAL RECKONING with Jeremy Strong. Another franchise
that wasn’t done, INSIDIOUS: Out of the Further, taking the audience into the
“bleeding” world. Sony Pictures has announced that filming on the new movie has
officially wrapped up, another memorable video game (at least I remember
playing it when my kids were little), with THE LEGEND OF ZELDA.
As I said, CinemaCon 2026 jumped right in with a vast offering of films with such diverse stories. During this week, theatre owners get to experience all that is offered for the rest of 2026 and beyond. It is also an opportunity for them to connect with one another and have a bit of fun with everything exhibitors also have to offer. There is so much to see and do, and tomorrow, NEON and Warner Bros. are up with their slate!
