CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON

Jeri Jacquin

Now available in a Limited Steelbook is Sony Picture Home Entertainment and director Ang Lee is the stunning film CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

Li Mu Bai is a Wudang swordsman (Chow Yun-fat) living in China during the time of the Qing dynasty in the 18th century. The person he cares for is Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) but honor keeps them apart because of the death of her fiancĂ© Meng Sizhao. Deciding to lay down his sword Green Destiny, asking Shu Lien to take it to Sir Te’s (Sihung Lung) estate in Peking where she meets the Governor’s daughter Jen (Zhang Ziyi).

Later in evening, someone steals Green Destiny, and it is traced back to the Governor’s house and Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei), a woman who wanted to learn the Wudang way. Shu Lien tells Mu Bai what happened when he arrives and when a showdown between Mu Bai and Jade Fox happens, she tells him about her anger at not being trained. Mu Bai is not swayed and that is when a masked fighter appears to save Fox.

Jen has her own interest in love when Lo (Chen Chang) sneaks into her room to ask her to run away from her arranged marriage. At the wedding, Shu Lien and Mu Bai want to help Lo telling him they will send Jen to Mount Wudang. What happens from that moment on are rivals, mercy, final words and a sword that will not be destroyed.

Yun-Fat as Master Mu Bai is perfect to put opposite Yeoh as Shu Lien. There is something extraordinary about these two actors sharing a story line together. It is breathtaking and heart breaking at the same time. Of course, once the action comes into play, they glide as they are meant to with such timeless grace.

Pairing Zhang as Jen and Chang as Lo is another stroke of beauty. It is interesting that Zhang’s portrayal of Jen comes out as a girl who has more secrets than the rest of the characters put together and she pulls it off magnificently. Chang as Lo is the rugged desert pirate that may have no trouble cutting down anything that gets in his way, but he sure has a heart for Jen.

Cheng as Jade Fox is out for one thing and one thing only, to make darn sure that everyone who has hurt her in the past will feel her wrath now and in the future. She is swift, vengeful and has someone on her side who will have her back, front and anywhere else someone is pointing a sword at.

Other cast include: Li Fazeng as Governor Yu, Hai Yan as Madam Yu, Wang Deming as Police Inspector Tsai, Huang Suying as Aunt Wu, Li Li as May, Li Kai as Gou Pei, Feng Jianjua as Gou Sinung, Ma Zhongxuan as Mi Biao, Xian Gao as Bo, Li Baocheng as Fung Chang, Zhang JinTing as De Lu, Du ZhenXi as Uncle Jiao, Wang WenSheng as JiangHu Jia and Song Dong as JiangHu Yi.

The cinematography is stunning with a mixture of the old and new surrounded by a lushness that adds depth to the story director Lee is trying to tell. I love a film that uses beauty as a character that is just outside the story but always in front of our eyes.

The soundtrack is ethereal and moving which is just another layer the film cannot do without. The stunts are nothing short of a ballet with the boldness of swordplay that never took away my belief in what I am seeing on the screen.

Inside the stunningly beautiful and colorful Limited Edition Steelbook are two discs coming in at 120 minutes and in Mandarin. This is a fantastic way to own one of the most stunning films of 2000.

LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL Comes to Steelbook

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to a Limited Edition Steelbook from writer/director Luc Besson and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is the 1995 film LEON: The Professional.

Leon (Jean Reno) is a hitman living the quiet life in a New York City apartment building and occasionally called upon by a man named Old Tony (Danny Aiello). Down the hall is the Lando family who are about to have the DEA knocking down their door lead by Norman Stansfield (Gary Oldman). Coming back from the store is Mathilda (Natalie Portman), a 12-year-old girl who realizes what is happening in her family in the apartment and walks past.

Knocking on Leon’s door, she wants to be let in which he does. Mathilda is realizing what Leon does and begs him to teach her how to be a hitman. Her goal is to take revenge for the death of her family. A deal is struck that Leon teaches her the ‘hitman’ ropes and she takes care of the apartment. It seems the perfect solution and quickly the two form a strange bond.

That is until Leon is sent on an assignment by Old Tony and Mathilda takes it upon herself to grab a few weapons and look for Stansfield. It is not long before Stansfield is in her sites, but Leon has other plans for his men. Now He wants Leon and the only person that can give him that information is Tony.

Leon knows that he must do more to protect Mathilda, especially when he realizes that Stansfield isn’t about to let what happen go without repercussions. Telling the young girl to go to Tony as the explosions and gunfire break out in the apartment building, Leon has one more surprise in store for Stansfield.

Mathilda now must try and start a new life which includes heading back to school giving up her dream of being a hitman!

Reno as Leon could not have been any more perfect for this role if he tried. Giving the air of a man who wants to be left to himself, Reno gives us that and a lot more. There is a sense of danger to him of course and his facial expressions are frozen but in those eyes are something completely different. The first time I saw Reno was in the 1990 film LE FEMME NIKITA as the cleaner Victor, so I suppose that was a practice run for Leon.

Portland as the young Mathilda is a girl who has seen much in her young life. An abusive father starts her down the road of rage and a trip to the store keeps her from experiencing the same fate as her family. Destroyed but it, she sees a chance for revenge, especially when you have a hitman living practically right next door. She is smart and sassy and yet, like Leon, her eyes betray what is really going on inside her. A difficult performance for a young girl but Portland made is look easy.

Oldman as Stansfield has the opportunity to be as bad as he wants his character to be. That’s the thing about Oldman, one role he can be the sleaziest bad guy out there and the next he can be the best of a good guy. His career is filled with such a vast array of characters (okay, DRACULA is my favorite followed by THE FIFTH ELEMENT as I love seeing unusual roles) and I never would have imagined him as Commissioner Gordon in the BATMAN films but there he was on the screen, doing it to perfection. As Stansfield he is the worst of the bad guys and I loved every moment of it.

Aiello as Tony has a history with Leon since he was practically a boy and there definetly was schooling of a different kind for him. Aiello is another actor that has left an indelible impression on my movie going heart and seeing him once again as Tony reminded me of why that it.

Other cast include Peter Appel, Michael Badalucco, Ellen Greene, Joseph Malerba, Maiwenn, George Martin, Jean-Hugues Anglade and Keith A. Glascoe as Benny.

The Bluray Special Features include Cast and Crew Look Back, Jean Reno: The Road to Leon, Natalie Portman: Starting Young, Fact Track (Extended Version) and Theatrical Trailer. Both the 4K Ultra H and Bluray include both theatrical and extended version of the film.

Having the Steelbook of LEON: The Profession is cooler than anything with fantastic artwork on the outside, especially the back with a very vulnerable looking young Portman. Inside are the two discs that are tucked nicely into the book making sure nothing happens to one of the most fantastic films made by writer/director Besson.

Tis the season so ask Santa to stuff your stocking with a Steelbook to remember.

In the end – if you want the job done right hire a professional!

BETTER CALL SAUL the Fifth Season on Bluray

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Bluray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is another of AMC’s hit series with BETTER CALL SAUL the Fifth Season.

Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) finally tells Kim (Rhea Seehorn) about the name Saul Goodman, the cellphones and how it gave him business. Offering to help her run a con on a client, Kim declines – at least while he is in the room. Nacho (Michael Mando) discovers that Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) is dealing with bad cocaine and Lalo (Tony Dalton) helps him prove it.

One problem is that Lalo is up to something and Gus wants to know what it is by asking Nacho. The tables quickly turn when Nacho sneaks into the Salamanca house and rescues Lalo’s cocaine that Domingo dropped right as the cops show up. Mike (Jonathan Banks) is reeling from Werner’s death and decides to drown his sorrows and then turns on Kaylee for asking to many questions. Jimmy wants to settle things with Kim and ends up in the elevator with the DA and works on more plea bargains. Leaving the courthouse, he is met by Nacho and they get in a car.

They end up going to see Lalo who makes a demand of him, to get Domingo out of prison. After a bit of legal Saul shuffling, Jimmy realizes that this will not be the last time Lalo uses him. Wanting his father to get out of drugs and live a safer life, Nacho wants to sell his fathers’ shop and dad is not happy. Kim pushes for a Mr. Acker to leave his home to make way for another business, wanting to help him, he makes it clear her help is not wanted.

So, she asks the developer to use another site for the build and leave Mr. Acker his home, to no avail. That is when she turns to Saul to do more than she can. Stacey (Kerry Condon) makes it clear she is not thrilled to have Mike watching Kaylee and later that night, what happens to Mike confirms her fears. Jimmy thinks the only way to help Kim and Mr. Acker is to find something incriminating to use on the developer.

Once they find something useful, Jimmy takes on the meeting to make sure that the developer knows they are in for serious money. Kim gets a little upset about it demanding that she and Jimmy need to get married or she is gone. Nacho tells Mike that Lalo intends to rat out dealers to the police and that brings the cops out.

Now that each other’s secrets are safe, Jimmy and Kim seal it with a kiss. No time for anything else as Lalo wants Saul to get bail. That does not mean the chaos is finished as Nacho is asked to take out something that belongs to Gus. In the meantime, Saul gets Lao bail and Jimmy has to deal with Howard.

In Mexico is Lalo’s bail money and Jimmy is told to pick it up with a pay out for himself. Kim hates the idea feeling it puts him in a bad position. He should have listened as a shoot out occurs from an unexpected Mike and the two men now must walk home. When Kim asks Lalo where he and does not get an answer. Finally, back home, Jimmy pays Lalo’s bail and is told Lalo is going back to Mexico. He does not tell Lalo or Kim what really happened.

However, Lalo is a little itchy about the story and asks Jimmy to repeat it, but Kim is angry that her husband even has to and makes that clear. Moving on with business, Lalo and Nacho go on to another business proposal that leads to a set up on Lalo. He is not going down without a fight and information about who is trying to end him.

Odenkirk as Jimmy/Saul is such an amazing actor to pull off the craziness of these two roles meshed into one. He is surrounded by an awesome cast which does make him shine but lets not, for one moment, not shine the spotlight on Odenkirk. I have although thought he has the amazing ability to choose such interesting roles and Jimmy/Saul is perfection.

Seehorn as Wexler is a woman who wants to be seen as straight forward but that’s hard to do when the man you love is Jimmy/Saul. Giving the ultimatum this season is probably the only thing keeping them both safe from the secrets of their lives. Banks as Mike is an actor who I have been watching for so many years and it is not surprising that he just slides into this role with such ease.

Dalton as Lalo is makes it all look so smooth and easy. Jimmy/Saul certainly does get the short end with him and it is difficult not to realize this is a character that runs deep and secretive. Esposito as Gus is a man who is in one hell of a mess from different sides. Using legitimate fronts for his dealings, keeping the cartel happy is not going to be easy. Mando as Nacho is playing what ever side is going to save his life and that is not a bad way to go in this environment.

Esposito as Gus is the character I am always fascinated by and it is quite possible due to the fact that I’m fascinate with Esposito as an actor. He always brings something unique to the roles he plays and as Gus he does the same thing but I think with a touch more.

Other cast includes Patrick Fabian as Howard Hamlin, Juan Carlos Cantu as Manuel Varga, Dennis Boutsikaris as Rich Schweikart, Rex Linn as Kevin Wachtell, Javier Grajeda as Juan Bolsa and Jeremiah Bitsui as Victor.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment encompasses motion picture production for television, digital content and theater releases. The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. The Bluray includes the Bluray Exclusive of Deleted Scenes, Tell Me Again, The Good, The Bags and The Ugly, Bagman – The Ambush, Bagman – The Cannon Roll and Effects for This! Also included is Cast & Crew Commentaries on Every Episode, Gag Reel, Commercials & Training Videos and Crystal Balls.

The Episodes include Magic Man, 50% Off, The Guy for This, Namaste, Dedicado a Max, Wexler v. Goodman, JMM, Bagman, Bad Choice Road, and Something Unforgivable.

BETTER CALL SAUL has seven Prime Time Emmy Nominations in 2020 including Outstanding Drama Series.

The series brings AMC another feather to its cap as its programming getting better and more amazing with every how it creates. Each series brings such a diversity of storytelling that is unique, unusual, intense, and unexpected. There is something to be said for the platinum age of television and BETTER CALL SAUL shines in it.

Just when I think I have the next move figured out – I do not and I completely okay with being proven wrong. These characters and the actors who portray them give so much that I am riveted from start to finish.

With so much down time, catching up to the fifth season of BETTER CALL SAUL is a fantastic way to spend some couch time! Coming in on three bluray discs, there is 522 minutes of catching up and getting a look at the inside world of Jimmy/Saul.

HAVEN’S END

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from director Chris Ethridge and Mill Creek Entertainment comes the story of terror in the cities with HAVEN’S END.

Trauma doctor Alison (Catherine Taber) is suspended from the hospital when terror attacks begin to happen in major cities. Boyfriend Derek (Anthony Nguyen), a military man, is not happy that Alison wants to break the rules and go help where she can. Friend Jessi (Megan Hayes) knocks on the door to make sure her friends know what is happening.

It is all over the world and when the CDC is under attack, Alison, Derek and Hannah receive a message saying to get out and find a safe place. On the road the radio and cell phones are not working as they pull up to a warehouse in the middle of nowhere. At the door is Harry (Robert Pralgo) who seems seriously prepared.

But when some bad boys show up, the only way for the group to get out is to fire their way out! Coming up to their next stop to help Jessi is Alison’s family camper and brother Kevin (Alex Zuko) and girlfriend Hannah (Hannah Fierman) who are a little jumpy with their own weaponry.

Its clear there are some family difficulties between Alison and Kevin so the next morning he takes Hannah and leaves the group. It does not take long before something in the woods they are walking through brings Kevin back to Alison. They can not understand his ramblings and Hannah is nowhere in sight!

Derek goes looking and does not find anything either and soon enough the lights Kevin spoke of are inside the camper. Each of them begins to experience fear and frustration of the unknown. Surprisingly, their radio begins transmitting messages from the military telling them where to go for help.

The question is – will the help still be there when they arrive!

Taber as Alison has broken the rules of being a doctor but when chaos breaks out the only place she wants to be is back in the action. Fortunately, she and the group get out in time but are isolated from the world. Taber is dealing with more than a falling apart world when Kevin and Derek don’t get along, Hannah is a problem, Jessi has a few secrets, and she doesn’t understand about the lights. That is a lot for one person to take let alone with four others.

Nguyen as Derek tries to keep his military training in mind but has his eyes on everything. Not getting along with Kevin does not help matters but Alison is his main concern. Hayes as Jessi is trying to help where she can but all she can think about is the spouse left behind.

Zuko as Kevin is using the family site as a place for he and Hannah to be alone. When Alison brings her group, there is instant craziness, and all the past family drama cannot help but surface. It is when he sees the lights that everything about Kevin changes. Fierman as Hannah can not seem to keep it together but feels some comfort around Alison and Jessi. Learning about what is happening in the world makes her emotional control even harder to deal with.

Other cast includes Krista Berutti as Theresa and Troy Halverson as the Anchorman.

Mill Creek Entertainment is the home entertainment industry’s leading independent studio for Bluray, DVD and digital distribution. They have a dynamic array of film and television content that reach thousands of websites. From SNOW WHITE, BATTLEFIELD EARTH, 12 MONKEYS and more are made available. Please visit their website at www.millcreekent.com.

The DVD Bonus Features include Audio Commentary from Director Chris Ethridge, Writer/Producer Michael H. Harper, Producer Stacey Palmer and Actress Catherine Taber and Trailer.

HAVEN’S END is a mixture of sci-fi, zombies and what happens when human beings stop trusting one another. Added to that deep seeded unresolved family issues and you have a film that goes chaotic from the start.

Keeping the cast minimal allows the paranoia to set in quickly as their stories are hinted at one by one. When you put people under stress in confined places, well, all sorts of mayhem begins to happen and flashing lights aren’t helping matters. I am sure we can all understand that in the times we are living in.

In the end – when the world dies where do you run?

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from Lionsgate Home Entertainment is the animated story of friendship and the past with THE LITTLE PENGUIN PORORO’S DINOSAUR ISLAND ADVENTURE.

Once it does, it grabs Alo and Crong and returns it to a large space craft. Once aboard the ship they realize that Mr. Y is not about making friends as they are chased through the corridors by robots. The evil blue dude only wants the dinosaurs to profit from them.

Escaping, the gang returns to the forest to ask the larger dinosaurs for help and Alo finds the tribe he knows. From Bri the Longneck to Peter the Pterodactyl, they all come together to stop Mr. Y from taking what is not his! Their leader King is not as keen to help Pororo get his friends back. Then Alo remembers how all the dinosaurs came to be in the woods.

Now that they have everything they need to know, Pororo, Alo and the gang decide that it is up to them to get their friends and make it right.

Now, adding this film to its 16,000 motion picture and television titles you can see everything coming soon as well as available now at http://www.lionsgate.com.

THE LITTLE PENGUIN PORORO’S DINOSAUR ISLAND ADVENTURE is such a delightful story about making new friends, loyalty and doing the right thing – even if others do not want to help. That is an important lesson for kids who see this film as mixing fun with meaning impacts them even more in their own decision-making process.

The animation is stunningly colorful and the characters each have their own unique personality. They also bring their own set of unique talents allowing each one to help in their own special way. That is important when kids watch to know that we all have our own talent and pooling resources for good can never be bad.

Of course, it does not hurt that the characters are cute, charming, sweet and head strong and that is a bonus we can all enjoy! Pauly Shore brings a lot of fun with his attempt to be evil as Mr. Y! The action is fast and will entertain the entire family during the times we are together looking for snuggle movie time.

In the end – it is bravery verses high tech!

A CRAZY LIFE BEING HALF BROTHERS

Jeri Jacquin

Coming from director Luke Greenfield and Focus Features is the unlikely pairing of siblings when one discovers being HALF BROTHERS.

Renato is a young boy living in Mexico with Father Flavio (Juan Pablo Espinosa) and they share the love of flying together. Going to the United States to look for work, Renato has a difficult time being separated from him. Time goes by and there are phone calls and such but no Flavio.

Now grown, Renato (Luis Gerardo Mendez) is an aviation executive still living in Mexico and preparing for his wedding. Unexpectedly, he learns that his father is seriously ill from Flavio’s American wife Katherine (Ashley Poole) but wanting nothing to do with the man that crushed his heart so many years ago.

Getting a push from his fiancé, Renato reluctantly decides to go only days before the wedding making it clear it is a fly in and fly out situation. Arriving, he gets off the plane more irritated than ever and it is made worse by a rude customer at a coffee stop. Getting to the hospital he is met by Katherine before walking in to see Flavio who is immediately moved to see his son.

Renato shows no emotion and walking into the room is the rude coffee customer who turns out to be his half-brother Asher (Conor del Rio). Renato is horrified at the prospect of having a brother he did not know about but even more horrified that it is the rude coffee customer!

Now they are both thrust together to discover what really happened to Flavio after leaving Renato and after because it is clear that neither truly knows the man they both call their father. Closed off to Asher makes the beginning of the trip all about the ramblings of his brother driving him also so insanity. But clue after clue brings the story of what really happened, and they get another road buddy in baby Renato.

Family has its own set of truths!

Luis Gerardo Mendez as Renato is a self-made business executive that has closed himself off to relationships like the one with his fiancĂ©’s son because of what happened with Flavio. A bit strict and stringent keeping his feelings locked up, it is not a surprise when he sees Asher. All he sees is someone who is not strict, stringent and took his father. It is a mixture of an adult reacting and a child although which one is which is up to the viewer. I have to say that Mendez made me laugh just as much as Rio.

Rio as Asher is a guy who seems to have had it easier than his brother Renato, at least as far as Renato is concerned. A little different in this thinking, he just wants everyone to be happy and to love his family. Of course, he is lacking in direction because no one has ever expected much from him and it shows. The scene where he finally explains his feelings to Renato is very touching.

Espinosa as Flavio cannot make it right for his older son Renato and cannot explain why to his younger son Asher. Espinosa’s portrayal of Flavio has no cultural lines because life is messy, complicated and unpredictable and Flavio experienced all of those in abundance. Atonement can be hard, but Flavio made it interesting and even funny.

Other cast includes Jose Zuniga as Evaristo, Vincent Spano as Mr. B, Alma Sisneros as Sister Helen, Jwaundace Candece as Doris, Beatrice Hernandez as Sister Marisa, Teresa Decher as Beatrice, and Biance Marroquin as Tere Murguia

Focus Features’ mission is to make a lasting impact on global audiences by creating the home for artists to share diverse, distinctive stories that inspire human connection. HALF BROTHERS is a story of what happens when life takes you to an unexpected place, it is about anger, sadness, jaw drops, frustration all swirled into the arms of forgiveness and understanding. It does not hurt that there is a lot of comedy mixed into that because, lets be fair, families can be hysterical even if they do not try. I also have a newfound respect for goats.

As each mystery is solved, another one presents itself giving the brothers time to stop acting like kids and step up to being accepting adults.

This is definetly a get-together film for everyone to enjoy in a time where having a few laughs and plenty of warm emotions is really needed – even if it is provided by two unlikely brothers like Renato and Asher.

In the end – there is no running from family!

PINK FLOYD’S DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER Comes to Digital

Jeri Jacquin

This has been a year of no concerts and that is making some of us a little stir crazy so, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings us joy beyond belief for the early holiday season with PINK FLOYD’S DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER.

In 1965, a bank known as Pink Floyd would show up on the music scene with its own unique sound and in 1967 their album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn with Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright and later joined by David Gilmour.

Their success came as the band created concepts behind its music. The list of albums includes The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and the epic album The Wall that I would see come to the screen in 1982. Trust me when I saw that was a musical experience that I would see over and over again gladly handing over money for a ticket.

Although the band went through division and revision, two more albums came with A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell and The Endless River. Along with these albums came awards, recognition, celebration and millions of fans who, to this day, crank up their radios, CD’s and even vinyl albums to reminiscent of musical times we refuse to forget.

All of what I just wrote is minute because this band has seen its highs, lows, friendships, deaths and a history that is meaningful. The lyrics to their songs hold everything and nothing, depending on the listeners ability to allow every note and word to reach that place Pink Floyd strives to get to.

PINK FLOYDS DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER is a concert that was recorded in 1988 at the Nassau Coliseum in New York. David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright brings their own unique style once again to the stage with ethereal imagery, subtle messages but most of all songs that brought the attending audience to its feet with smiles almost as bright as the light show.

Joining the gentlemen on stage is Jon Carin, Scott Page, Guy Pratt, Tim Renwick and the lovely back up vocals of Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom and Margaret Taylor.

The remastered concert film comes in from its original 35mm to a 5:1 surround sound and its music to the ear. Thrilled at the Bluray (because those colors are going to be stunning) and DVD release, before watching it might I suggest a good sound bar and understanding neighbors because this is the chance to be a socially distant concert goer and get a concert fix all at the same time.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment encompasses motion picture production for television, digital content and theater releases. The studios include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films and Sony Picture Classics. To see what is coming to theaters and to home entertainment please visit www.sonypictures.com.

The songs include: Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Signs of Life, Learning to Fly, Sorrow, The Dogs of War, On the Turning Away, One of These Days, Time, On the Run, The Great Gig in the sky, Wish You Were Here, Us and Them, Money, Comfortably Numb, One Slip, and Run Like Hell.

At a time when music can be the release for all that we are feeling this year, PINK FLOYD’S DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER is just what the doctor ordered. It is familiar, comforting, relaxing to the ears and mind and I cannot think of anything better than that.

Crank it up, sing along and enjoy the show!
