MINIONS & MONSTERS

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres from director Pierre Coffin, Patrick Delage, Illumination, and Universal Pictures comes another adventure from our favorite MINIONS & MONSTERS.

Olivia (Allison Janney) is a tour guide taking a group of people through a film history museum. Talking about all the exhibits, they come to a statue of two famous Minions. No one in the crowd knew the story of Minions James and Henry. In their tribe of Minions, they go through time trying to find a villain to serve. James is a different kind of Minion who loves telling stories, much to the head Minion Dick's dismissal. On their hunt for a bad guy, James meets Henry and becomes best friends.

While on the hunt, the Minions find themselves in Hollywood, and James, along with best friend Harry, finds Tinseltown to their liking. Becoming friends with director Max (Christoph Waltz) after he realizes their potential, film execs Frank and Elwood (both played by Jeff Bridges) love their film silliness. The Minions are becoming globally famous, but that is short-lived once films go from silent to talkies. Back on the streets, fending for themselves, James has a moment of brilliance: it’s time for them to make a monster movie!

Minion Ed had taken a spell book through their travels, and James uses it to conjure up real-life monsters for their film. The first to show up is Cthulhu Goomi (Trey Parker), who knows exactly where to find monsters Phillip (Bobby Moynihan) and Howard (Phil LaMarr) to be a part of the film. James and Henry are excited, but there is one problem: Goomi has his own ideas about what monsters really want to do.

Pierre Coffin as the Minions had a full-time job in this film. This is probably the most the Minions have spoken. They are hilarious, funny, and it’s easy to pick out the Spanish words mixed in the gibberish. The craziness and chaos are what the Minions are famous for, and they won’t let viewers down.

Waltz as Max starts out crazed by the Minions. Once he sees the possibilities, he not only makes films with them, he befriends them. His voice is so cool with this character, I actually wish he were in it longer. Bridges' voice both Frank and Elwood, studio execs who know what they want in a film, and the Minions fit the bill.

Parker as Goomi is a mixture of cute and evil, as the smallest Cthulhu I’ve ever seen. But don’t let the size fool you. Parker's voice lends itself to the humor you’d expect and the evil that I’m sure he loved playing. Moynihan as Phillip and LaMarr as Howard are the two summoned monsters who follow along with Goomi’s plan but get lost in it all when Irene shows up.

Shout out to Allison Janney because I am the biggest fan of this lady. She made the narration so much fun.

Other cast include Jesse Eisenberg as Dort, Zoey Deutch as Debbie, and George Lucas as George Lucas.

Universal Pictures has just added an amazing film to their library and is making it available for us to all experience and re-experience in our own home theaters. There are films of every genre available, from scary to drama to family films. For more of what they have to offer, please visit www.uphe.com.

The Minions first came to the screen in 2010 with DESPICABLE ME, and everyone who was anyone fell in love with the yellow gibberish-talking creatures. Their antics were childish, giggling at things we all giggle about, but they make it even better. My family not only loves the minions, but we also have them around the house for daily giggles and smiles.

With the holiday weekend coming up, and families looking for things to do, MINIONS & MONSTERS is time spent together. The film is brilliant, colorful, fun, has laughs for both adults and kids, and that adds to the fun. The film does have old movie references that the adults will enjoy, such as knowing who George Lucas is, but it doesn’t change the delight for children. Mixing that with the humor of the Minions, even if we can’t understand everything they say.

There is the usual slapstick humor, charm, and silly antics as we would expect. That being said, as much fun as I had, I missed Gru, Dr. Nefario, the girls, and the relationship with the Minions. But, there is fun at the beginning of the film and when the credits roll, so expect more giggles from memorable friends.

In the end – it’s an adventure all its own!

Disney Shines with HOPPERS

Jeri Jacquin

Currently streaming across multiple platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home from Walt Disney Studios, Pixar, and Daniel Chong comes the story of loving animals in HOPPERS.

Mabel (Piper Curda) is a young animal lover from the city of Beaverton. Always trying to save animals, it is her grandmother who teaches her about the forest glade and the wild animals that live there. Staying in her grandmother's home after her passing, Mabel continues her fight. When she learns that the town's mayor, Jerry Generazzo (Jon Hamm), intends to build a freeway through the glen, Mabel is determined to stop him. How?

Well, Mabel learns that biology professor Dr. Sam Fairfax (Kathy Najimy) has an ingenious way that just might help. Technology called the Hoppers Program allows Mabel the ability to connect with the wildlife. Being monitored by Dr. Fairfax, Nisha (Aparna Nancherla), and Conner (Sam Richardson) helps to follow along. When Mabel breaks pond rule, Ellen (Melissa Villasenor), the bear, is taken to beaver King George (Bobby Moynihan), who takes care of displaced animals. He tells Mabel what is causing all of this, which means that when these two get together, Jerry doesn’t stand a chance!

There is a great summoning of all the animal royalty, from the fish, snakes, insects, all of them. Together, they discuss what to do next, but it doesn’t actually go according to plan. The animals come together to because, sometimes, you can’t go against nature!

Curda, voicing Mabel, is so charming and believes in what she is doing wholeheartedly. I just love her expression, which lends such warmth to the character. Moynihan, as King George, is such a fun-loving guy who just loves taking care of the other animals around him. Najimy, as Dr. Fairfax is responsible for Mabels, well, condition but is keeping an eye on her. Hamm, as Jerry, is the target of the animal world’s anger and is set to be handled.

Villasenor, as Ellen is the largest of the animals, is fighting for their place in the world. If you need someone on your side and don’t mind interfering with pond rules, then Ellen is your bear. Shout out to Franco as Titus because sometimes dynamite comes in small, crazy packages.

Other cast include Dave Franco as Titus, Eduardo Franco as Loaf, Tom Law as Tom Lizard, Ego Nwodim as Fish Queen, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Bird King, Steve Purcell as Amphibian King, Vanessa Bayer as Diane, Lori Alan as Mabel’s mother, Karen Huie as Grandma Tanaka, Joe Spano as Elder Beavertonian, and Meryl Streep as the Insect Queen.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. Home of the most beloved animated features, including SNOW WHITE, PINOCCHIO, and SLEEPING BEAUTY, to name a few, is what keeps families coming back for more. To see what is currently available to add to your own family library, please visit. www.movies.disney.com for their At Home titles!

MOVIES ANYWHERE gives viewers the ability to download the Movies Anywhere App. With that, you can view films by downloading or streaming to your favorite device using a Digital Code. For more information on Movies Anywhere, please visit www.MoviesAnywhere.com.

Bonus Features include The Critter Diaries: Wander behind the scenes with director Daniel Chong and the Pixar creative team as they explore Yellowstone, study wildlife, and find real-life inspiration for our favorite new animated characters from Hoppers, Hopping In: The Making of Hoppers: Hop into the making of the movie as filmmakers, cast, and crew share how their ideas, collaboration, and creative process brought the story, animation, and lovable characters to life in Pixar’s Hoppers, "Meet King George" Scene Breakdown: Dive deep with director Daniel Chong and the filmmaking team as they reveal the craft of making King George’s Superlodge. Get insight into the directing process, editing, VFX, animation, and production design.

Also included is Beaverton Revealed: Explore Hoppers to find surprising Pixar film cameos, hidden references, and plenty of fun, behind-the-scenes facts. Dam Good Bloopers: Laugh along with your favorite voice actors from Hoppers as they have fun bringing their characters to life in the recording booth. Deleted Scenes: Check out these scenes that didn’t make the final cut, as introduced by director Daniel Chong and editor Axel Geddes. Cold Open, The Glade, The Mission, Kings Arrive, George's Bachelor Pad, and Helicopter Ride.

HOPPERS is such an emotional film dealing with so many important issues. The first is Mabel, a young girl who sees the beauty in the freedom of creatures. When no one else sees her heart, it is her grandmother who accepts everything about Mabel. A politician who sees only himself and power instead of what is right for the world around him, especially the animals. Let’s not forget the environment and animals who finally see a way to have a say in what is happening around them.

The story is so original and amazing, but then that’s what Disney and Pixar are very good at when it comes to animation. The funny is also on point, which I love. Bringing families together for not only an enjoyable time, but also to have plenty to discuss afterward. The animation is stellar as always, and they couldn’t have made George any cuter if they tried. So grab the family, get the popcorn ready, and curl up for a night among the wildlife!

In the end – be part of something big!

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Jeri Jacquin

In theatres from directors Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Pierre Leduc, Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures is the next adventure with THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE.

Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson) lives with her star children on the Comet Observatory, and just as she is settling in for the evening, Bower Jr. (Benny Safdie) has other plans. Having created a universe-destroying cannon, it can only be used with the power of a Princess, so he takes her. His objective is to defeat Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) and get his father, Bowser (Jack Black), back!

Star Luma (Virginia Dare Jelenic) is sent by Princess Rosalina to find Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and go through the Gateway Galaxy. When Mario and Luigi discover that she left without them, they take Yoshi (Donald Glover) and mini-Boswer do what they can to find her. They don’t hang onto Bowser long and are stuck on a planet. They meet Fox McCloud (Glen Powell), who helps get them where they need to go!

On Planet Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Princess Peach come up against Bowser and Bowser, Jr., and their goal is one thing – get Princess Rosalina back and get home to those waiting for them!

Pratt is back as Mario and, from the sound of his voice, he’s having a good time. Day as Luigi is, as I’ve always said, an underappreciated brother. Of course, hanging out book-clubbing with Bowser might not have been his best idea. Taylor-Joy is a Princess who isn’t going to be taken for granted when it comes to taking on bad guys. Larson as Princess Rosalina loves her little stars, and the story of a part of her life comes to the screen.

Black as Bowser has the unmistakable voice and, in this film, gives us all a chance to chuckle in the beginning and wonder, can evil be changed when being a mini? Glover shows up at Yoshi, our family’s favorite game character for sure. Jelenic, as Luma is so charming, sweet, and has the voice we just ‘awwww’d’ over.

Shout out to Powell as our favorite fox! Welcome to the brothers' world!

Other cast include Kevin Richardson as Kamek, Keegan-Michael Key as Tod, Eric Bauza as Toad General, Roxana Ortega as Ukiki, Luis Guzman as Wart, Ed Skudder as R.O.B., Juliet Jelenic as Lumalee, and Issa Rae as Honey Queen.

Illumination came to be in 2007, founded by Chris Meledandri, and has had and continues to have one of the most successful line of films. Those include THE LORAX, THE GRINCH, THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS, SING, and now THE SUPER MARIO BROS. movie franchise. Shigeru Miyamoto is the founder of Nintendo Studios and joined up with Meledandri for the Super Mario Bros. franchise.

What a grand way to spend the weekend, but with three generations of family. I played the video game when my kids were little, then they got into everything that the franchise had to offer, grew up, and had children of their own who are now into the franchise. So, sitting in the theatre watching the movie, I got to watch everyone laugh and call out things my adult children saw from their childhood. This is how movie-going should be, just having a blast of a time with characters we absolutely love.

I believe what made us all, and the rest of the theatre audience, cheer the most in surprise was seeing a certain fox who has made his way into the franchise. Illumination has brought so much nostalgia to the film with the original game pieces, but also staying true to the characters. I don’t believe there is anything missing, but then again, if you wait for the second piece after the film, you might recognize another character. That excited everyone to know there will be another film, well, there better be another film.

Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Rosalina, Princess Peach, Bowser, Bowser, Jr., and the rest of the characters from all the Mario World’s are there. Mixed in with them are so many funny characters, so make sure your eyes are peeled because some of them go by quickly. Calling them Easter Eggs is hilarious, considering the holiday weekend. The film is colorful, bright, and full of action and adventure. There isn’t a moment I didn’t love!

Writer Matthew Fogel has not only written both amazing The Super Mario Bros. movies, but also MINIONS: The Rise of Gru and THE LEGO MOVIE 2: The Second Part. He says of the film, “It’s incredible, overwhelming, and so exciting. I was thinking of my eight-year-old self who was begging his mom to get a Nintendo and finally got one, that all these years later I’d be premiering a movie!”

Illumination and Nintendo have brought us all back to a time our family has always been fond of, and now we get to share it with the next generation, who now embrace it all just as we did. This is a fantastic film for families because there is something for everyone in every second of the film. So grab goodies from the Easter baskets and head to the theatres for a fun time.

In the end – new galaxies, new friends, and Yoshi!

The Law of ZOOTOPIA 2 Arrives on 4K Ultra HD

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to 4K Ultra HD, Bluray and DVD from writer/director Jared Bush, Byron Howard and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is the return of the badges with ZOOTOPIA 2.

Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) are now partners at the Zootopia Police Department and are trying to find the next big case. When things go a little wrong with a smuggling ring, there is tension between Judy and Nick causing Chief Bogo (Idris Elba) to send them to partner therapy with Dr. Fuzzby (Quinta Brunson). Judy can’t stop thinking of what she found during the smuggling ring which is a snake skin and talks Nick into helping her investigate.

Doing a bit of investigating, Judy learns that the Lynxley family might have some clues and the only way to find out is attending the Zootenial Gala. Nick is not happy about going but tags along to see if a snake is also going to be there. While there, Judy meets Pawbert Lynxley (Andy Samberg) who is the awkward one of the family but their conversation doesn’t last long as a snake strikes and steals a book describing the different parts of Zootopia. Family head Milton Lynxley (David Strathaim) and his guards are also on the chase.

When Judy catches the Gary the snake (Ke Huy Quan), he tells her something about the book that could help his family but Lynxley turns on the officers and now they have to escape. There only way out of this bind is to find Gary with the help of Mr. Big (Maurice LaMarche) and discover Maplestick (Fortune Feimster) who shares that they are in the part of town where outcasts can be themselves.

Once they find Gary, Judy discovers what the book means and how there are secrets that some people want to keep quiet and will do anything to do that. Judy and Nick need to do what they are good at, getting answers!

Goodwin as Judy is a bunny with a plan and it also means she’s investigating because, well, she is driven to catch the bad guys. I just love her voice in this role and it fits so perfectly. Goodwin’s voice is so, dare I say, animated. Bateman as Nick is just what one would expect from him. He is so good at doing sarcasm and dry humor that I’m all for it. He provides the laughs as a fox who still has a bit of the bad guy in him which comes in very handy.

Quan as Gary the snake has made my whole family decide that its time to get a Gary-plushy! This is such a charming character that takes all the scary out of snakes but instead makes you want to cuddle the stuffing out of him. Samberg as Pawbert gives the same hapless and helpless lynx that just wants to fit into his family. Strathaim as Milton is the strong arm of the family and nothing is going to stand in his way of keeping the family name at the top of Zootopia’s list.

Shout out to LaMarche as Mr. Big because I just love this character. He proves that you should never judge a book by his size – or else! Feimster is hilarious as Maplestick with her outcast wisdom and pure joy of life.

Other cast include Shakira as Gazelle, Patrick Warburton as Mayor Winddancer, Nate Torrence as Benjamin Clawhauser, Bonnie Hunt as Mom Hopps, Don Lake as Dad Hops, Mccaulay Culkin as Cattrick Lynxley, Wilmer Valderrama as Higgins, Brenda Song as Kitty Lynxley, Leah Lathan as Fru Fur, Raymond S. Persi as Flash Slothmore, John Leguizamo as Antony Sootley and Danny Trejo as Jesus.

That’s not all! There is also Tommy Lister Jr., Mario Lopez, Auli’I Cravalho, Alan Tudyk, Jenny Slate, Josh Gad, Tommy Chong, Josh Dallas, Celia Strong, June Squibb, Tig Notaro, Yvette Nicole Brown, Dwayne Johnson, Ed Sheeran, Robert Irwin, and Michael J. Fox,

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. Bonus Features include Featurettes: The Zookeepers, A City of Stars, Everybody Can Draw!, Zoo-prising Secrets, Wilde Times in the Booth, The Treat Trolley, “Zoo” Music Video by Shakira, Deleted Scenes: What’s in the Box?, Where Are They Now?, Animal Hospital, Welcome to the Team, Desert Festival, Clawhauswer Tracks Judy, A Plight at the Museum and Clawhauser’s Family.

There are films that have a difficult time have a sequel because moviegoers want their characters to stay their same loveable selves. ZOOTOPIA 2 doesn’t have any worries on that score at all. I am saying this proudly that the film is actually funnier than the first. Right? Can’t believe I said that right? ZOOTOPIA 2 just took the story and threw everything at it but the kitchen sink and it all worked and worked beautifully.

The story is a solid one, the action is amazing, the animation is pure gold and the cast brought in was just fun, fun, fun. Let by Goodwin and Bateman, I can see why so many wanted to join in, I mean just look at the list, and there are many more. Let’s also not forget the Easter Eggs that are all over the film and it is so much fun to spot them, trust me, we had a blast. There is one very cool egg that should make Stephen King giggle especially.

So, with this week leading up to Thanksgiving, it means the kids are home. This is not only a kid movie but the adults are going to have to much fun watching it as well. Gear up and be prepared to start the holiday season with the best the animal world has to offer with ZOOTOPIA 2.

In the end – they are back with a twissssst!

He is DAVID

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres from directors Brent Dawes, Phil Cunningham, Sunrise Animation Studios and Angel Studios comes the stunning animated film about DAVID.

David (Phil Wickham) is a young shepherd who enjoys spending time in the pastures with his flock. Protecting them and returning them back to his village is a position he takes very seriously. One afternoon, David meets Samuel (Brian Stivale) who tells him and his family that there will come a time when the young boy becomes king. Not having time to process the information, guards arrive in the village looking for him to be taken to King Saul (Adam Gold).

Once at the palace, David can’t believe how different it was compared to his village. When he arrives, he is told that the king needed something to help him with the stresses. David obliges by singing an uplifting song for the king. King Saul sees something special about the boy but he has other things to deal with. It seems that King Achish (Asim Chaudhry) wants to challenge the King of Isreal by sending his largest soldier Goliath (Kamran Nikhad), against one of King Saul’s men.

Hearing this, David finds his way to the battlefield and bypasses everyone to come face to face with the giant. He is about to prove his faith. Growing up with King Saul’s son, they trained together and spent so much time together. But the worries of war are about to be brought for the land again as David must convince family, the village and a king that it is their faith and trust that can bring peace once again.

Wickham as David is a young man who continues to hold his beliefs even if he has moments of concern and doesn’t want to be king. Both Engman as boy David and Wickham as the young David provide both not only give their animated role warmth and strength but their vocals in the songs are beautiful. Gold as King Saul is a man who has his own issues of duality, one minute he knows what to do as king and the next his lets his faith slip with insecurities – especially when it comes to David.

Chaudhry as King Achish believes that strength in numbers is the way to try and destroy a kingdom, what he doesn’t count on is the faith of someone smaller. The character is a bit comical but I enjoyed Chaudhry’s vocal portrayal.

Shout out to Mesika as David’s mother showing what a supportive mother who shares his faith can do for a young man.

Other cast include Brandon Engman as young David, Miri Mesika as Nitzevet, Sloan Muldown as Zeruiah, Ashley Boettcher as young Zeruiah, Mark Jacobson as Jonathan, Mick Wingert as Zaydel, Will de Renzy-Martin as Vaizatha, Lauren Daigle as Rebecca and Kamran Nikhad as Goliath.

Angels Studios is a community of members who have joined the mission to bring meaningful, inspiring and worthwhile stories to life. From the emotional journey of THE SOUND OF FREEDOM to the inspiring courage of BONHOEFFER: Paster, Spy, Assassin, Angel movies shine a light on stories that speak to the soul. Find out more by visiting www.angel.com

DAVID is a stunning animated film and yes, it is a faith-based film but it is surprisingly not church-y. It is truly a tale of a young boy staying true to his belief and wants others to know that they can all be heroes. What the film does have is a wonderful story that surrounds itself with absolutely thrilling animation, lovely songs and a story that most people know. Songs such as Tapestry and Shalom are so well done. It must be said that now my granddaughter wants a baby lamb!

What the film does offer especially is the empowerment that each person has within them. In the world we are experiencing now full of mindless rulers and, in some cases, wanna-be rulers, DAVID shows that it isn’t the size of one person but the size of everyone who stands up to the wrongs and evils that surround us all. Not only does the film do that, but it raises spirits through hope that each of us is responsible for helping the other bringing out the best in us all – and that is an amazing experience.

Gather up the family and spend time with a film that has so much to offer during this holiday season.

In the end – it is about the power of belief!

It is the Return of THE EMPORERS NEW GROOVE

Jeri Jacquin

Currently on 4K Ultra HD, Digital and Bluray to celebrate a groovy 25th anniversary from director Mark Dindal and Walt Disney Studios is the hilarious tale of THE EMPORERS NEW GROOVE.

In a kingdom lived Emperor Kuzco (David Spade), a very narcissistic, self-indulged ruler who only thinks of himself. He also keeps an eye on his sneaky assistant Yzma (Eartha Kitt) and her side-kick Kronk (Patrick Warburton). The emperor’s birthday is just around the corner and he knows exactly what he wants. Walking from the local village is Pacha (John Goodman), a good man who lives a simple life with his wife and children. Receiving a summons from the emperor leads him down the mountain to the palace.

Walking through the palace halls, Pacha comes face to face with Kuzco and is in shock when discovering what the summons was about. The spoiled emperor intends to take over the very hill that has been in Pacha’s family for longer than anyone can remember! Knowing there isn’t a lot he can do about it, Pacha returns home to figure out a way to tell his family.

In the meantime, Yzma has pushed her emperor too far making royal decisions without his permission. So, Kuzco decides its time to downsize and that Yzma should retire. This doesn’t go well with Yzma and she decides that its time to take steps. Relying on Kronk to help was her first mistake and at a dinner, Yzma’s plan hatches as Kuzco has gone from two legs to four! When the llama ends up in Pacha’s yard, it is time for the two to journey back to the palace and do whatever it takes to get the kingdom back.

Spade as the voice of Kuzco is the voice I hear in my head when I think “Boom baby!” amongst other iconic lines from the film. He is sheer perfection as the narcissistic and shady emperor giving such life to this animated character. Kuzco may be those horrible things but good grief Spade gives it all such hilarity no matter how many times I see this film. Spade gets the chance to voice a character is as bad as he wants to be and it works from start to finish.

Goodman as Pacha is such a kind and loving man who just wants to take care of his family. It is a tad heart tugging when he realizes what Kuzco has in mind for his generational home. Goodman’s voice lends the opposite of the main character with compassion, even when it could have been easier to walk away with Kuzco needed help. Instead, he believes in kindness and another way, even if Yzma is hot on their trail.

Kitt as Yzma is another delicious voice in the film with her ability to bring everything crazy (both good and bad) into this character. This had to be absolute fun for her and Yzma is now an iconic Disney character that my whole family loves. Yes, she isn’t very nice but karma is waiting just around the corner for her. Warburton as Kronk, as much as we love all the characters, has a special ‘favorite’ place in our family’s heart. The scene where he is walking along the wall doing his musical Mission Impossible theme, is something we all still do. Also, who doesn’t squeakity-squeak-squeak to the local squirrel population.

Other cast include Kellyann Kelso as Chaca, Eli Linnetz as Tipo, Stephen Anderson as Ipi, Bob Bergen as Bucky, Patti Deutsch as the grub waitress and Wendie Malick as Chicha.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. Home of the most beloved animated features including SNOW WHITE, PINOCCHIO and SLEEPING BEAUTY to name a few is what keeps families coming back for more. Special Features include Deleted Scenes, Audio Commentary, Music Videos, Featurettes: The Research Trip, Character Voices, Creating Computer Generated Images and The Emperor’s Got Game, and Theatrical Trailers for THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE.

This film is on of Disney’s stories that doesn’t get as much accolade as it should, and it absolutely should. It is fun, hilarious, charming, full of adventure, and colorful with a cast that absolutely killed it. The best part of Disney’s animated films is that watching them again and again (and again times a million) shows how wonderful we hold these stories. I have to say I’m not a fan of the Disney live-action films because it takes something special away from the artistry that comes from the animated films.

It is hard to believe that I watched THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE with my children only to have them now share with their children. Also amazing is that all of us still laugh as much now as we did when the film was released in 2000. The release in 4K UHD just brings the crispness and vibrant colors out even more and, if you have a cool large flatscreen, means you can have more people over for a Disney movie night.

Spade, Goodman, Kitt and Warburton, along with director Dindal, brought magic 25 years ago, and that magic is still being felt these years later. Gather up the family because it is time to find out what the fun is all about with a little BOOM BABY!!

In the end – it is all about HIM!

Torches are Chasing STITCH HEAD

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres for the thriller season from writer/director Steve Hudson and Briarcliff Entertainment comes the animated story of monsters and friendship led by STITCH HEAD.

In the small town of Grubbers Nubbin, very high on the hill is a castle that the towns folk are afraid to even speak about. In the castle is a mad professor (Rob Brydon) who creates monsters. His first is a young lad named Stitch Head (Asa Butterfield), an assistant in the lab and caring friend to the others in the castle. He keeps things running smoothly and efficiently. Down in the village, a circus show arrives in town and leader Fulbert Freakfinder (Seth Usdenov) promising to frighten the people for a mere coin. It is the young Arabella (Tia Bannon) who explains that the creatures aren’t scary at all and only what’s on the hill scares them.

Back in the castle, a new monster that Stitch Head names Creature (Joel Fry), is introduced to the others in the castle and he explains that they must be quiet to keep the villagers away. Soon, the doorbell, literally, rings and the castle is on high alert. Freakfinder reaches out to Stitch Head to convince him that there is a better life outside the castle. Thinking about it more and not feeling loved, Stitch Head decides it’s time to see the real world and do what other kids would do – join the circus.

Almost immediately Stitch Head is a hit with the village but Arabella sees him more as a friend even though her Nan (Alison Steadman) tries to keep her at bay. Someone else who is keeping an eye on him from a distance is Creature. When things begin to go wrong and Freakfinder turns on Stitch Head by using the villagers to become what monsters fear the most, but Stitch Head, Arabella and Creature have other plans.

Sometimes monsters are exactly what you need!

Butterfield as Stitch Head is such a charming boy who believes that working with the professor and taking care of monsters is fulfilling. That may be true but it makes him feel unloved which is what sends him to the Freakfinder circus. It is his castle friendship with Creature and his new friendship with villager Arabella that makes him truly understand where he belongs. This isn’t the first animated character that Butterfield has done voice for as he has also done the voice of Icarus in the video game HADES II and the series THE PROPHECY. His voice is perfection for Stitch Head and I loved it.

Bannon as Arabella lends her voice to a young girl who clearly knows what scary is but she hasn’t quite found it yet. I just love how she was so not impressed with the circus or anything else but instead was more interested in friendships made. Usdenov as Freakfinder is a charismatic character, musically fun and outlandishly flamboyant which is why Stitch Head was so easily swayed. Of course, as with most characters like Freakfinder, there is a darker side and when push comes to shove, Usdenov gets to flick the switch and it works so darn well.

Fry as the Creature is endearing, loveable, caring and is thrilled to have found his best friend for life. In protective mode, he believes that Stitch Head is worthy of everything he has to give, including love. What a marvelous character to be the voice of and if we all could have one friend like that in our lives, we’d all be so much better in all things. Brydon as the Professor is a character so wrapped up in his work that he fails to see the joy of what is in front of him. Steadman as Nan tries hard to keep Arabella away from Stitch Head but the little girl is just to fast.

Other cast includes Fern Brady as Madame Miranda, Jamali Maddix as Taj & Tej, Ryan Sampson as Doctor Dislocation, Rasmus Hardiker as Geoff, Sway Clarke as Tiny Monster, Gemma Saunders as Pigbutt, Paul Tylak as Owggagoffakkookk (yes, that’s his name), Steve Hudson as Woodlouse and Ruth Gibson as the Old Lady.

Briarcliff Entertainment is an independent film production company launched in 2018 and responsible for such films as FAHRENHEIT 11/9, action films such as Liam Neeson’s BLACK LIGHT and COPSHOP with Gerard Butler. For more of what they have to offer please visit www.briarcliffentertainment.com

STITCH HEAD is a wonderfully animated film based on the books by writer Guy Bass. He is an award-winning author who has written more than 30 books. They include Dinkin Dings, Spynosaurs and Skeleton Keys. Dinkin Dings and the Frightening Things won Bass the Blue Peter Award for Most Fun Book with Pictures.

The story brings so many lively and totally creative characters and monsters, each with unique personalities and a bit of a mish mash of parts, and childlike qualities that makes me instantly want a stuff plushie of each. Watching with my family was such a joy that by the end of the film we spent so much time talking about our favorite parts of the film and which character we loved the most, after Stitch Head that is. Director Hudson had a vision for the film and wasted no time in putting it together (pardon the pun) in such a way as to make STITCH HEAD an instant classic that will be enjoyed for a very, very long time.

This is seriously one of the most beautiful animated films this year. It brings horror (not in a gruesome way), comedy, adventure, drama and love all wrapped up into a colorful piece of filmmaking. There isn’t a moment that does bring out some emotion that is going to include laughter, ‘awwwwws’, cheering and fun. It is amazing animated films such as this that bring families to the theatre to celebrate the joy of being together and comes out to time with the Halloween season.

In the end – he is frighteningly friendly!

They Are Right OUT OF THE NEST

Jeri Jacquin

Coming soon to Bluray, DVD and Digital from directors Andrew Gordon, Arturo A. Hernandez, Veerapatra Jinanavin and Well Go USA is a lesson on loyalty and love when you are right OUT OF THE NEST.

Arthur (Cory Yee) is a 17-year-old goat of many jobs and one of them is a delivery boy in the Kingdom of Castilia but also studying to be a barber that will one day cut the hair of the prince. The New Year Festival is being prepared for and Prince Damian (Duc Luu) must be readied for it, which includes a haircut. Master Toad (Sean Burgos) makes it clear to Arthur that he is not ready for many things, most importantly not ready to cut the hair of the prince which is considered the highest honor.

The coronation ceremony is being coordinated by the princes Uncle Cronus (Nick Atkinson) but the royal household has more reason to celebrate as the couple is waiting for their children to hatch. Yet, deep in the forest, a chase is happening with Canis (Lily Poon) landing at Arthur’s feet. In her bag are the princes unhatched children. Master Toad must help the school and village escape from the Order of the Claw. Arthur is given the task of saving the royal children and he finds help from a silent hero in Jacobus (Luis Bermudez) who helps him keep the eggs safe. Down the river to a secure place, Arthur begins to learn of magic, wizardry and who he truly is. Now he begins to understand his relationship with Master Toad.

But that will have to wait as the Order of the Claw want what Arthur now has – the royal chicks. In the middle of the rapids, he welcomes Terra, Puddle, Leaf, Spark, Twig, Tin and Puff. Along the way back to the prince, Arthur learns so much about the world around him and lessons, compliments of his small feathered travel companions. Now, Arthur is going to let nothing or no one hurt the little ones in his charge and he will do anything to get them home safely.

Yee voicing Arthur brings such life into this animated character. Carrying the load of the film, since babies only make little noises, Arthur has the chance to show all those around that he begins to understand his world better. I enjoyed watching Arthur and listening to Yee bring it all together so well to the point one almost forgets it’s an animated film. Burgos as Master Toad is very patient with Arthur and wants him to do well but there is a reason for their strong bond.

Bermudez as Jacobus is the silent warrior type but when Master Toad calls, he comes to help Arthur sharing a little of the history he knew knowing about. Poon as Canis lends her voice to a strong warrior also ready to help the royal family no matter the cost. Atkinson as Uncle Cronus has a few secrets of his own and is working with the royal family before the coronation.  Finally, Luu as Prince, and soon to be King Damian, is not only preparing for the big day but is more concerned with his new arrivals than anything else in the world.

Other cast include Ankie Beilke as the Queen, Wong Man Wai as the General, Debra Wilson as Mrs. Porcupine, Jack Murphy as Mr. Porcupine, Jimmy So as the Owl, Zheng Xia as Terra, Libin Huang as Puddle, Dylan Wang as Puff, Sun Xiaoniu as Spark, Cola Jia as Twig, Shuchen Zhang as Tin, So Pak Lai as Leaf, and Gillian Berrow as Mei.

This is the debut feature film of Pixar mainstay Andrew Gordon (MONSTERS INC, RATATOUILLE, FINDING NEMO) and Disney alumnus Arturo A. Hernandez (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, TARZAN, HERCULES), as well as Veerapatra Jinanavin who says about his approach to the film, “It was heavily focused on making sure the story had universal appeal, while also maintaining its unique charm. OUT OF THE NEST is truly a Thai animated film, both in its origin and development. I hope that OUT OF THE NEST will continue to inspire audiences across the world.”

OUT OF THE NEST is everything families want in a film they can watch together. It has themes of family and extended family, being watched over without knowing it, love of community and adoration of small creatures that see the best in everything. Truly good family entertainment is so special and this film is one that absolutely falls into that category. This is the film that means popcorn and cuddle time because it can be enjoyed by the family no matter what the age. I so love time with the family and this film brought that to a new level.

The animation is absolutely fantastic with brilliant colors and stellar production provided by Base FX. I always try to make sure to mention that because it can make or break a film, in this case is makes it into the stratosphere. Having the chicks be different colors is charming on so many levels and I adored it. The characters are all different types of animals but they have one thing in common, wanting what is best for each other (with the exception of the Order of the Claw of course) and that makes all the difference. Having a goat, toad, chicken, porcupine and so many more animals would bring such great entertainment!

In the end – hatch your inner hero!

NE ZHA 2 is a Global Phenomenon

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres from writer/director Jiaozi based on the story Investiture of the Gods by Xu Zhonglin and A24 is the animated NE ZHA 2.

Ne Zha (Crystal Lee) and Ao Bing (Aleks Le) bodies are in the hands of Master Taiyi Zhenren (Rick Zieff) as he tries to prevent their souls dying. Using the Seven-Colored Sacred Lotus to turn them from mush back to their original form, the two have a lot of healing to do. Ao Bing’s father, Ao Guang, is the East Sea’s Dragon King and he believes that his son is gone. Trying to make things right gets interrupted when Master Shen Gongbao is sent to fight for the Chentang Pass and without time to properly heal, Ao Bing falls once again.

Now, Ao Bing and Ne Zha will have to share one body but it will only last seven days. Master Zhenren tells everyone that Ne Zha will have to do the three trials to become immortal to get the elixir that will fix the Sacred Lotus and bring Ao Bing back. Going to the Immortal Wuliang (Robert Clotworthy), there is no time to waste to begin the tests. Believing Shen Gongbao (Aidyn James Ahn) will maintain a ceasefire during the process, Ne Zha’s parents Li Jing (Vincent Rodriguez III) and Lady Yin (Michelle Yeoh) attempt to reach him in understanding that what is happening is wrong.

But things go horribly wrong and Ne Zha turns his anger toward anyone who stands in his way. It is the love he has for his family that makes him realize that his anger should be focused towards one person – and it is shocking when they all find out about the lies, deception, and abuse of power. Ne Zha and Ao Bing realize working together to battle the true evil is worth putting themselves in danger as long as necessary.

Other cast include Damien Haas as Deero, Grace Lu as Crana, and Michael Yurchak as Ao Shun.

A24 is an American company specializing in film and television production. They are best known for distributing such amazing films as EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, MOONLIGHT, HEREDITARY, THE LIGHTHOUSE, MIDSOMMAR and this years stunning look at WARFARE. For more information, please visit www.a24films.com.

NE ZHA II is a fantastical, thrilling, artistically beautiful, funny and a complex story line that is captivating from start to finish. Using the Chinese mythology, it wraps itself around Ne Zha’s need to find out what he is capable of and Ao Bing trying to return to a form that allows him to help with the turmoil from all sides. There are family bonds that are being stretched to its heavenly limits and bonds being formed from the mostly unlikely places.

The relationship between Ne Zha and Ao Bing is complicated and, at times, frustrating to the little fire bomb. Master Zhenren is wise and at the same time a bundle of nerves and wants fire and water to find their way back to themselves. Ao Guang is a father who has his own anger issues and finds himself in the middle of a battle. Immortal Wuliang lives on his little cloud watching Ne Zha take the trials to become and immortal. Parents Li Jing and Lady Yin want what is best for their son and they have the capability to fight as well as any demon or immortal. Watching the journey of these characters is, shall we say, enlightening.

The animation is crips, clean, and mind blowing all at the same time with a powerful story and a message. A sequel to NE ZHA, the visuals fill the screen with flawless battle scenes and emotional family moments that makes the journey through the film helps it fall into the ‘epic’ category. There are so many characters and how they link test the mind and still manage to be surprising at times.

In the theatre there were families watching and cheering throughout the film. My granddaughter and I had such a stellar time together. Seeing it in IMAX 3D is eye candy completely!

In the end – they will change heaven and earth!

On Digital He is the One and Only ELIO

Jeri Jacquin

Take your family on an interstellar adventure with Disney and Pixar’s ELIO which arrives to digital retailers (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home) this week. A great story for the entire family where ever in the universe you might be from with directors Adrian Molina, Madeline Sharafian, and Domee Shi.

Young Elio (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) is living with his Aunt Olga (voiced by Zoe Saldana) since the passing of his parents. It has been a difficult adjustment for them both as Elio isn’t sure where the new normal is coming from and Aunt Olga gives up her dream of being an astronaut. They are both trying to patch their family but Elio finds himself in a bit of trouble. First with schoolmates and then at the at Aunt Olga’s job at a government tracking station.

Both have to do with Elio’s love of space and his desire to be abducted. While at the tracking station, the group is excited that Gunther Melmac (Brendan Hunt) announces that he’s discovered a message. When Olga shoots it down, Elio decides to send a little welcome of his own and the results are more than he could have hoped for.

Taken up to the Communiverse, the aliens believe that Elio is a leader planet Earth and they are excited to have him along with Questa (Jameela Jamil), OOOOO (Shirley Henderson), Tegmen (Matthias Schweighofer, Helix (Brandon Moon), Auva (Naomi Watanabe), Turais (Ana de la Regulera) and Mira (Anissa Borrego). Before he is totally accepted into the Communiverse, Elio witnesses Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett) discovers that he isn’t accepted into the group. Angry, he vows retribution for his rejection.

Worries, Questa and the group worry that things will get worse but Elio volunteers to go to Lord Grigon and make him see reason. Over on the angry leader’s ship, Elio tries to reason with him but discovers it doesn’t work. While going through the ship, he meets Glordon (Remy Edgerly) and they strike up a plan and a friendship. On Earth, Aunt Olga is wondering what is happening to Elio because something has changed.

Chaos explodes when Lord Grigon figures out the plan and Elio is sent back to earth. Elijo explains to Aunt Olga what has happened when a craft with Glordon inside is at the military base. Now it’s time for Elijo, Glordon and Aunt Olga take on the universe to set things right again.

Kibreab as Elio voices a young boy dealing with deal and feeling alone in a very large world. Reaching out into space to find a connection, no one understands what he is doing. When the one thing that he wants in the universe happens, Kibreab gives voice to Elio finding his happy place and that’s the Communiverse. The problem is his dishonesty with his new friends but he tries to make it right. It is his friendship with Glordon that is charming, sweet and so very memorable.

Saldana as Aunt Olga doesn’t know what to do with Elio and she sees that he is so very sad. It isn’t easy trying to understand a child that has gone from being a nephew to practically being a son. Giving up her dreams to take care of Elijo, he senses that she isn’t happy with the decision she made. Saldana is a strong character in a difficult situation and lending her voice to this role is so warm and loving.

Garret as Lord Grigon is an unhappy alien who feels rejected by Communiverse and he’s going to show what happens to unhappy aliens. Garret is a tough voice lending itself to a tough character who doesn’t listen to his son. Edgerly as Glordon is fun, charming, so very sweet and can’t figure out a way to tell his father that fighting just isn’t his thing. I love the friendship that comes about between Glordon and Elio and Edgerly’s giggle is contagious.

Shout out to all the aliens because they are so diverse, colorful and wanting to keep their world intact. My granddaughter just adored Questa because, “she is smooth with a voice that is very calming when things get crazy”. I love that she felt that about one of the characters. Also, Hunt as Melmac is hilarious even though his moments on screen are brief.

Other cast include Young Dylan as Bruce, Jake Getman as Caleb, Shelby Young as Diplo Ship, Bob Peterson as the Universal Users Manual and Kate Mulgrew as Museum Exhibit Narrator.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. Home of the most beloved animated features including SNOW WHITE, PINOCCHIO and SLEEPING BEAUTY to name a few is what keeps families coming back for more. To see what is currently available to add to your own family library please visit. www.movies.disney.com for their At Home titles!

Bonus Features include Inside the Communiverse: The World and Characters of ELIO, Out of This World: An Astro Q&A, Astronomic Art Class: Ooooo and Glordon, Extraterrestrial Easter Eggs and Fun Facts, Galactic Gag Reel and Deleted Scenes.

ELIO is a magical, color and an absolute family film that should have parents making this a movie night. It is a story of love, sadness, friendship, understanding, dreams and how we (on this planet or any other) are not so different that we can’t learn from one another. The story is one of a young boy dealing with the hardest thing a child would ever deal with yet, the adventure teaches him the importance of being in the present and on earth.

I love when Disney Pixar brings such imaginative stories that draw people together and ELIO does just that. It has such profound moments that are made more vivid because of the animation and the imagination it took to not only tell Elijo’s story but the fantastic world of the Communiverse. Pop the corn and snuggle up with the kids and spend a little time in space with ELIO

In the end – the universe came calling!

They are Back and Blue with SMURFS

Jeri Jacquin

In theatres from director Chris Miller and Paramount Pictures comes the tale of a village and its secrets with the SMURFS.

Tucked away in the woods, Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is leading his village in singing and dancing. Each Smurf is good at something but No Name Smurf (James Corden) is having a hard time finding out what that ‘something’ is. While spending a little time alone, No Name looks to the sky for answers and listening is Jaunty (Amy Sedaris), a sentient book who wants to help. Staying in secret, the book has good reason as the evil Razamel (JP Karliak) wants to bring all the books together to take over the world.

Razamel’s assistant Joel (Dan Levy) has been tasked with finding the Smurf village and when Papa Smurf is taken, No Name and Smurfette (Rhianna) are on the case. The first place to look is with Razamel’s brother Gargamel who wants to trust his brother but, well, that’s a dead end. Papa Smurf left them a clue and it leads to Mama Poot (Natasha Lyonne) and brother Ken (Nick Offerman).

Razamel, as with all bad guys, underestimates the power of the Smurfs, friendship and what happens when you find that one thing that bring you joy!

Goodman as Papa Smurf gives the voice of calm and reason in the midst of chaos when Razamel Smurf-naps him. Knowing that his village has leaders that can take care of everyone, he also knows they just have to believe in themselves. Offerman as brother Ken is not interested in really getting into the mess with Razamel/Gargamel but realizes that it is because of a history with their father. Offerman always cracks me up and, in this case, his vocals match the attitude.

Corden as No Name Smurf is just trying to find himself. For me, all I hear is Biggie asking where Mr. Dinkles is (2016 TROLLS reference). The insecurities are set aside then he believes he can do magic that can help all the Smurfs. Rhianna as Smurfette is fine but personally I just don’t feel smurfy about it. I was expecting a bit, well more – more enthusiasm, more excitement – just more. Since the film is geared to a certain audience, it isn’t a deal breaker.

Karliak gets double duty voicing both Razamel and Gargamel and yet he manages to give them each their individual voice. They may be brothers but Karliak gives them each a vocal personality and I loved it. Lyonne as Mama Poot is her usual hilarious self and it is the voice that makes the fluffy being such personality. I have to say I’m going to be looking for a Mama Poot character to put on my desk absolutely.

Levy as Joel reminds me of a over zealous intern that is hoping for a permanent job by doing whatever dastardly deed the boss wants. Even when he tries to be “evil”, it only made me laugh even more. Sedaris as Jaunty is a book with a heart of gold who wants to help No Name but also knows that the wizards want her for evil purposes.

Other Smurfs and wizards include Sandra Oh as Moxie Smurf, Jimmy Kimmel as Tardigrade, Octavia Spencer as Asmodius, Nick Kroll as Chernobog, Hannah Waddingham as Jezebeth, Alex Winter as Hefty Smurf, Maya Erskine as Vanity Smurf, Kurt Russell as Ron, Xolo Mariduena as Brainy Smurf, Hugo Miller as Clumsy Smurf, Chris Miller as Grouchy Smurf, Billie Lourd as Worry Smurf, Marshmello as Turtle, Spencer X as Sound Effects Smurf and Chris Prynoski as Quiet Smurf.

SMURFS is definitely a family-oriented film filled with all the themes of friendship, adventure, meeting new friends, knowing where you belong and standing up for what’s right. Those are excellent reasons to take the entire family to see it. The Smurfs became a part of pop culture in 1981 when Hanna-Barbera began airing the animated show. My kids were glued to the television screen every moment it was on screen. Created by artist Peyo as they were originally called Les Schtroumpfs.

The animation is bright, colorful and everything one would expect of a story that included the Smurfs. There blue skin is highlighted by bright white clothing and iconic tipped hats making them impossible to not recognize. Children still giggle today when they see them just as much as they did forty-four years ago (that’s right, I did the math!). The characters are charming and there is no doubt about that. In this film, there is humor for the kids and for the adults as well. So, load up on the snacks and prepare for a good time together.

In the end – adventure comes out of the blue!

MULAN PRINCESS WARRIOR

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to On Demand from director Leo Lewis Liao and Level 33 Entertainment with the story by Roger Chen bringing the animated MULAN PRINCESS WARRIOR.

Mulan (Kim Mai Guest) is a young girl who has disguised herself as a man in order to join the army and save her family. Becoming a skilled soldier with a sword, she can hold her own in combat with her unruly nature. Chosen to go on a mission, the goal is to bring about the ending of someone Mulan is told is a danger to the country. When she discovers who the intended person is, Mulan also meets Arke (Alan Lee), a stable boy who wants what she wants – adventure and justice.

Someone else to be on the watch for is Lone Wolf (Vivian Lu), another woman who is equally skilled at fighting. She and Mulan are locked in a battle of their own but there is mutual respect in the midst of it. The one constant is Arke, the stable boy, who not only irritates Mulan but also challenges her like no other. The shock comes when they both realize that the Commander (Matt Yang King) is not who he appears to be and can divide the country even more than Mulan could have ever realized.

Strength and honor for their country!

Other cast include Joe Ochman as Mulan’s Father, David Pak as Asung, Greg Chun as Advisor and Chris Niosi as the Prince.

Los Angeles based Level 33 provides innovative sales, marketing and distribution services for feature films and entertainment content, delivering a flexible and transparent distribution solution for all platforms including Theatrical, Home Entertainment, On Demand, Broadcast and OTT. For more information, please visit www.level33entertainment.com.

MULAN PRINCESS WARRIOR is the story of Mulan, a young girl doing what she believes is right for her family. Putting herself on the line for her country, she is brave, strong and a bit headstrong. What makes this an absolute fun watch is the colorful animation and the twists and turns the story takes on. Most know the story of Mulan but this telling is very different and I enjoyed that the most.

Having films that uplift girls/women are very important in today’s world and this film falls wonderfully into that category. Mulan is a powerful example of what confidence in yourself and doing the right thing can bring about. I watched the film with my granddaughter and she absolutely loved the concept of the film. When I asked what part of the film she enjoyed the most, she said the relationship between Mulan and Arke in that they both wanted the same thing but went about it in different ways.

The story is action packed and so well done. The attention to detail and the actor providing the voices of the characters adds a rich layer to the film from beginning to end. MULAN PRINCESS WARRIOR is family fun that needs to be a cuddle-on-the-sofa-together kind of film time, with popcorn of course. It is also a story that can be talked about together as it relates to family, friendship and defending those who need it the most!

In the end – she fights for honor!

MUFASA: The Lion King Comes Home

Jeri Jacquin

Currently on Digital platforms from director Barry Jenkins and Walt Disney Home Entertainment comes the story of two brothers and one MUFASA: The Lion King.

Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) is a young cub who, after an accident, finds himself alone in the world. He meets Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) after rescuing him and convinces his mother Eshe (Thandie Newton) to take him in. The one lion who isn’t happy is Obasi (Lennie James) who sees Mufasa as a stray that needs to be away from him son.

As Mufasa grows, so does the teachings of Eshe! He has learned to be still and reach out to the vastness of his world. He and Taka remain friends and when the pride is under attack, Obasi sees that Mufasa is a force to be reckoned with. Mufasa is put to the test again when a pride of white lions led by Kiros is destroying prides and taking everything for his own. Obasi tells Mufasa that he must take Taka and keep the bloodline.

On the road they meet Sarabi (Tiffany Boone) and her trusted bird Zazu (Preston Nyman). Agreeing to continue on, they also meet Rafiki (John Kani) who has a way about him that is intriguing to Mufasa. That doesn’t mean the white lions aren’t hot on their trail. When they arrive at their destination, Mufasa attempts to make the animals understand that they must fight Obasi together or lose their beautiful home.

Pierra as Mufasa lends his voice to the orphaned lion who is raised by Eshe after becoming lost to his own family. His voice gives us the feeling of loss, of growing up, of Mufasa finding his place in the plains of Africa and of becoming a leader he was always meant to be. Harrison Jr. lends his voice to Taka, beginning as a young cub who befriends Mufasa and sees him as a brother, to having a complicated relationship with his father. Taka is also attempting to discover where he fits in and coming to terms with his own fears.

James as Obasi believes being a leader is to parade around being judgmental and lying in the sun while everyone else does the heavy lifting. The one thing Obasi is sure of is keeping the bloodline when it all comes under attack. Newton as Eshe is a loving substitute mother for Mufasa and sees potential and encourages it when no one else in his adoptive pride does. Everything she believes about Mufasa is based on his instincts and receptiveness to learning.

Boone as Sarabi is a princess in her pride but having been chased off, she teams up with Mufasa and Taka along with her own personal winged protection in Zazu. She is strong willed and perfectly capable of handling situations as they arise. Nyman as Zazu is more confident than anyone else and has no problem saying so. He is also quite funny and charming in his own right.

Kani as Rafiki is the calmest of the new “pride” that has banded together. He knows what he knows and doesn’t get ruffled by much. Getting Mufasa, Taka, Sarabi and Zazu to Malaylay is his mission and they honestly couldn’t have made it without him. I just love the very straight forward fun Kami brings to Rafiki and it’s all bundle around such love.

Other cast include Billy Eichner as Timon, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Anika Noni Rose as Afia, Keith David as Masego, Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, Tho Somolu as Taka cub, Kagiso Lediga as young Rafiki, Donald Glover as Simba.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. MUFASA: The Lion King is a must-have for any Disney home entertainment library sitting right next to THE LION KING on the shelf. The small lions are charming and it’s nice to see Pumbaa and Timon again as they are still as wild and silly as ever. The adult lions show the relationships between prides, being a stray, brotherhood, belief, and what can happen when power corrupts absolutely.

The live-action special effects give the animals the look of reality with big paws, big claws and flowing fur mixed in with emotion in their eyes and strength in their voices. All of that lends itself to telling the story of Mufasa and how he became the unexpected King of Pride Rock. Jenkins and Disney seem to have taken great pains to make sure that the original 1994 THE LION KING story meshes in with MUFASA: The Lion King and that makes all the difference.

So, gather up your own pride and return to Pride Rock for the story we didn’t know about MUFASA: The Lion King.

In the end – from orphan and outsider to King!
