Prime Asks for ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR

Jeri Jacquin

Currently streaming on Prime Video from director Paul Feig is the return of two women who have a history but not afraid to ask for ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR.

It has been five years since Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) brought down the sly Emily Nelson (Blake Lively). Since then, she has written a book about what happened and is at a book signing when in walks a haute-couture laden Emily. Stephanie is surprised to see her and is informed that her case is on appeal. What does she want you might ask? Well, Emily wants Stephanie to be her maid of honor with upcoming nuptials in Capri. Her intended is Dante Versano (Michele Morrone) a very tall, handsome and mysterious man that Stephanie is suspicious of.

Hopping a private plan to Capri, Stephanie brings Vicky (Alex Newell) along just to make sure that Emily doesn’t decide to take revenge on her. On the trip, Emily tries to convince Stephanie that she has no ulterior motive for wanting her to be there, just that she is someone Emily can trust. Arriving, the first uncomfortable guest they meet is Sean (Henry Golding), as the two women realize that a drunk Sean is a troublesome Sean. The first event is a lunch as Stephanie meets Dantes disapproving mother Portia (Elena Sofia Ricci) who has a surprise of her own for Emily. Her Aunt Linda (Allison Janney) and mother Margaret (Elizabeth Perkins) have arrived and so is the trouble that they can cause.

That’s when things begin to go horribly wrong but, as shocking as that is, Emily and Dante are not about to stop the wedding for anything. That also doesn’t stop more horrible thing from happening and now Stephanie is once again in the middle of it all. Being held, Stephanie knows that its time to kick into true-crime solving mode in order to get herself out of the mess she is in. She believes that her mother might hold the keys to some of the answers and its time to do her best sleuthing before she ends up behind bars.

Being friends with Emily has its moments!

Kendrick as Stephanie is dealing with the low end of success from the book she wrote about the mess with Emily. Everyone has an opinion about what happened and Kendrick’s Stephanie does her very best to live with all the mess. When Emily reenters her life, Stephanie makes it clear that she ‘isn’t as nice” as she used to be. Her wit is sharper and her mistrust is on high alert. That’s what makes watching her this time around so much fun – the fact that she’s onto Emily. Wit for wit, watching Kendrick with the comebacks is like watching a ping-pong tournament, take your eye off the ball once and you might miss the good stuff.

Lively as Emily makes a huge comeback and, as with the five years earlier, does everything big – big entrance, big hates, big presence – and makes it look good. I just love how Lively handles the back and forth with Kendrick and makes it clear to all of us watching that we will never know for sure if she’s serious or not. She is full of mystery and sly fun and I am absolutely here for every bit of it. Casting Lively along side Kendrick was a stroke of genius in 2018 and bringing them back together to do it again with a script that works is brilliant once again.

Morrone as Dante is the mysterious man Emily is marrying and it is clear that they are close. Protecting his lady against ex-husbands and irate mothers, Morrone does a grand job until he doesn’t. Well done. Ricci as Portia is the mother-in-law from hell who is not happy about her son’s marriage and isn’t about to go down without a fight – and she has the weapons to make that happen. I just loved her to pieces because she is a spectacularly dressed crazy mom.

Janney as Aunt Linda is another crazy lady who happens to be in charge of her sister who also falls into the category of a crazy lady. She is sharp and I just love the fact that Janney’s career has brought so many different characters and she has performed each one superbly, if you can’t tell, Janney is one of my favorite actresses. Perkins as Margaret has spent most of her life swimming in a bottle and it is clear that Emily is not happy about either family member being at her wedding. Perkins is funny and full of information.

Golding as Sean returns as a man who has found the bottle as well and being in the same room with both Stephanie and Emily just brings out his own warped humor. He did enjoy the luncheon show so that’s something. I just love that he returned to his role of Sean. Newell as Vicky is just happy to be vacationing in Capri and being ringside to all the insanity of it. She sees another book and her career improving with the madness that happens when Stephanie and Emily get together.

Other cast include Joshua Satine as Miles, Aparna Nancherla as Sona, Kelly McCormack as Stacy, Diletta Jayne as Lulu, Ian Ho as Nicky, Lorenzo de Moor as Matteo Bartolo, Bashir Salahuddin as Detective Summerville and Andrew Rannells as Darren.

Prime Video offers television shows and original content included in its Amazon Prime subscription. Original programs such as CARNIVAL ROW, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, and THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL are hit shows. Coming soon is the next series with GOLIATH starring Billy Bob Thornton and it promises to another successful and intense series. For more information, please visit www.amazonprime.com.

ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR is a fun, twisted, mysterious, and sharp-witted film that doesn’t have a moment of boredom. I will admit to being hesitant to watch the film as sequels don’t have a wonderful track record but I can honestly say this film is completely outrageous in the best way possible. The story is so well written, the snappy one-liners are going to be used by me no question, the setting is lavishly big like Emily’s personality and full of who-dun-it that Stephanie loves.

This is exactly the type of film you want to sit back with a good glass of wine, a charcuterie board and some pals who are looking for a night of laughs. Expect the unexpected, prepare for jaw drops and figure out the mystery because there is more to the story than meets the eye.

In the end – every friendship has its twists!

Hall H on Friday Brought Excitement and a Sad Goodbye

Jeri Jacuqin

Hall H is always the place to be for film and television and Friday’s panels are no exception. Beginning the morning with a huge surprise by Stephen Colbert opening the day and leading the way to Prime’s upcoming series LORD OF THE RINGS: The Rings of Power. With the unusual look of an orchestra on the stage, Colbert introduces musician extraordinaire Bear McCreary who plays the most intense music with choir right behind. It is stunning, beautiful and ethereal. That is exactly what LORD OF THE RINGS: The Rings of Power is.

The cast is so large it took three different panels because the stage would be overcrowded if they all came at once. Showing trailer after trailer, the audience became more and more excited and, at times, bantered with Colbert on who knew more about Middle Earth and it was hilarious.

The panel included Patrick McCay, J.D. Payne and Lindsey Weber as they explained their love of Tolkien and how deep their feelings run. Making sure our trip back thousands of years before Frodo and the gang is as wonderful, trust me when I saw fans and even those who might just want to check it out will not be disappointed.

There will be more on this in another article because trust me when I saw there is so much to share.

AMC brings Chris Hardwick back to the stage to moderate The Walking Dead Universe and after receiving a wonderful welcome back from the crowd, Hardwick introduces a new show. TALES OF THE WALKING DEAD is the next journey with six stories into the dead universe at Scott Gimple comes to the stage.

The panel includes Showrunner and Executive Producer Channing Powell, Director Michael Satrazemis, Terry Crews, Danny Ramirez and Samantha Morton returning as Alpha. To best describe the show, Satrazemis says, “This is everything with amazing stories and new people. TALES OF THE WALKING DEAD feels exciting and we like what we have done”. Of course a trailer makes the audience cheer knowing that universe has many surprises.

Hardwick then moderates AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD for its final panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con. Speaking with a few people in the audience, they tell me it is a mixture of sheer sadness yet happiness to be in Hall H to be a part of saying goodbye. Hardwick, trying to keep it together himself, introduces the cast that includes the return of Scott Gimple, Angela Kang, Greg Nicotero, Melissa McBride, a very blonde Josh McDermitt, Ross Marquand, Seth Gilliam, Lauren Ridloff, Cailey Fleming, Michael James Shaw and, of course, Norman Reedus.

There were laughs, memories shared and nods to other cast members but also there were tears coming from so many people on the stage and in the audience. McBride, who had played Carol from the very first season, tries to speak and continually becomes choked up tries to express her feelings about the end of THE WALKING DEAD.

Everyone notices two cast members who were not present and that is because Maggie aka Lauren Cohen and Negan aka Jeffrey Dean Morgan had an announcement of their own to make. Seems Maggie and Negan are going to find their way to New York City in another break out show ISLAND OF THE DEAD. I don’t care what they call it because I am more interested in how Maggie and Negan end up in New York as all will be revealed.

As the cast says their final goodbyes both to the audience and each other, it gets very intense. Each of the cast tells the audience how much their support has meant and as much as we all love the show (and I am a huge fan, just ask my Sheriff Rick Grimes badge on my desk), they wanted the fans to know their feelings are equally returned.

As they exited the stage, Scott Gimple remained because an audience member earlier had asked about the movie that had been rumored to explain where Andrew Lincoln aka Rick Grimes had gone. Gimple starts to talk when he is drowned out by the audience going nuts as Danai Guiria aka Michonne and Andrew Lincoln aka Rick Grimes saunter onto the stage.

There big announcement is that instead of a movie, there will be six episodes on AMC+ (I’m sure their subscription is going to go through the roof now!) that will explain where Rick and Michonne have been and wrap up that part of the story…or will it? Lincoln makes a date with the audience for next years Comic Con to answer questions and I’m sure there will be plenty. Its not like we want these characters to ever go away.

The next panel kept everyone in their seats as the panel for BRZRKR, Keanu Reeves comic book character gets its first time in the very large Hall H. Along with Ron Garney, the book is about a half-man-half-god making his way through time. Moderator Coy Jandreau was geeking out a little speaking with Matt Kindt, Matt Gagnon, Eric Harburn, Mattson Tomlin and Stephen Christy.

Speaking about the character of B, Reeves says, “I had this idea of a character who can punch you through the chest and rip arms off who was cursed with violence trying to figure out who they are and reclaim their humanity.” Meeting with Boom! Studios, the idea was pitched and it took a few years to put it together.

Continuing to gush about the project, Reeves says, “The people at Boom! Curated my experience in a special way. They brought together a team that helped this be more enjoyable. But when the first issue was in my hand, I thought it was f**king Christmas. When I read it, I thought it was some of the best creative days of my life.”

Growing up with comic books in Toronto, it is clear that this project is something special by Reeves and his team so expect it to be epic.

But that isn’t all – Reeves returns to the stage letting fans know they were not going to get out of Hall H with empty hands. Giving out posters for JOHN WICK 4, fans (yes, I’m one) get an even bigger swag gift with a trailer to the film.

That is a day fill with excitement that can only be found in Hall H! Now comes Saturday, the day people have slept overnight for on concrete because who doesn’t want to go home with a story of their own to tell. It is going to be a feast for the eyes and senses because San Diego Comic Con in Hall H never disappoints!

THE TOMORROW WAR

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to help ring in the fourth of July weekend from Amazon Originals and director Chris McKay comes the story of the future who want help fighting THE TOMORROW WAR.

Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) has fought in a war and taken his G.I. Bill bringing him to teaching science at the local high school. During daughter Muri’s (Ryan Armstrong) birthday party and watching a soccer game with wife Emmy (Betty Gilpin), a shock happens right before a goal with a lightening blast landing mid-field.

Out of the light comes Lt. Hart (Jasmine Matthews) telling everyone listening that they are from the future of 2051. The planet is systematically being destroyed by a creature that wants nothing more than to exterminate human life and they need help. Soon after, a draft is begun to bring people from this time to the future aiding in the battle.

Teaching his science class, Dan does not know if or when he could be called, and that question is quickly answered. Emmy wants the family to run, and Muri just wants her Dad. Dan decides he must do what is asked of him if Muri is to have a future of any kind. With a quick fitting and relatively no training, Dan finds himself in the middle of a hellish situation.

He meets fellow soldier Charlie (Sam Richardson), Dorian (Edwin Hodge) and Romeo Commander (Yvonne Strahovski) but there is no time for fellowship! The creatures instantly fixate on the new arrivals, and it is the Commander who gets them to a place looking for scientists. What is important is to find the work that can stop the creatures in 2051 and save the time Dan is from.

The future can save the present!

Pratt as Dan gives us the facial expressions of a warrior that we all have come to expect and with THE TOMORROW WAR he once again delivers. As a man who wants a future for his child, there is nothing he would not do but guarantee he does not expect it to be like this. The thing with Pratt is that he can be as bad ass as he wants but you can bet there are going to be one liner that are memorable in every role he takes – and Dan is no exception. His wit is mixed in with his brawn and it makes the film from start to finish.

Richardson as Charlie is a character I am never likely to forget. His nervousness brings a reaction that might be hard to keep up with but once you think about it – he makes sense. He is also a brain that when put together with Dan makes a team that is awesome. Hodge as Dorian is a man with issues of his own and he is not going to be talked out of how he handles his life. Dorian might be a little cold, but he has his reasons.

Matthews as Hart is a very strong soldier and even though what is happening in 2051 is truly horrendous, she knows her job and has to keep that strength and Matthews gives her the backbone to make it all happen.

Armstrong as young Muri is a girl who has a great relationship with her Dad. She quickly becomes a young girl that has to see adult scary things but stands by him. Gilpin as Emmy does not want him to go to war (and who would), trying to find a way out of it. When Dan decides to go, Gilpin puts on her support face and does so the rest of the film.

Shout out goes to J.K. Simmons and I mean that seriously! Who ever decided to pair Pratt with Simmons needs to do it again because dang these two guys have mean stares, sharp wit and no fear of spikey creatures. Simmons has always been a favorite of mine so to see him buff up and gun up was pretty dang cool and I will not mind seeing that again.

Other cast include Mary Lynn Rajskub as Norah, Keith Powers as Major Greenwood, Mike Mitchell as Cowan, Jared Shaw as Tank, Alex Louder as Diablo, Seychelle Gabriel as Sgt. Diaz, Chibuikem Uche as Lt. Ikemba, Rose Bianco as Rose, Alan Trong as Lt. Tran, David Maldonado as Dodd and J.K. Simmons as James.

Amazon Prime offers television shows and original content included in its Amazon Prime subscription.

There is something spectacular about a big action film that opens during the Fourth of July holiday, and I have always looked forward to them. THE TOMORROW WAR is one such film that lends itself to the resilience of the human spirit and, in this case, the future of the human spirit with the addition of creatures that think we are so easily wiped out.

Pratt and crew make a story full, and action packed which is, lets face it, why we love them. But this film gives us something so much more. Part of good action films is that sometimes the ending just leaves us wanting more and with a few more questions. THE TOMORROW WAR takes it all a step further.

Instead of just beating the aliens, director McKay makes darn sure that in the films two hours and twenty minutes, we get to experience everything. Not just the fact that the creatures want us all as a snack but the how, why and what are these characters going to do about it.

There are reminiscences of films I have seen before, and I see them more as a kudo to the alien-action genre like INDEPENDENCE DAY and even a bit of THE X-FILES, but I am thrilled with every moment of it.

Honestly, I had a good time. I yelled, I hollered, had my own one-liners that probably are not fit for print, applauded and laughed so much. That is the sign of a good film in getting to just have a fantastic experience AND plan to see it again on my Christmas gift 70-inch TV with surround sound (you have been warned neighbors unless you care to join in…bring popcorn).

See it for what it is, THE TOMORROW WAR is why we love our movies loud, action packed and actors that make it just about the best way to spend time with family and friends.

In the end – to save the present they must fight the future!

UNCLE FRANK Gives Award Winning Performances

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Amazon Prime from writer/director Alan Ball is a tender and heart-wrenching story of a girl and UNCLE FRANK.

Beth (Sophia Lillis) is a young girl living in the south and that means everything that goes with it. Knowing that she does not quite fit into the Bledsoe family, she is thrilled when her college professor Uncle Frank (Paul Bettany) comes to visit from New York. Spending tie with him, Beth gets a chance to talk about what her family expects of her and what she wants for her life.

During that visit, Uncle Frank makes Beth promise that she will do and be anything she wants to be, no matter what the family says. Taking his advice, she applies for college in New York with the chance to spend more time with Uncle Frank. After Mom Kitty (Judy Greer) and Dad Mike (Steve Zahn) have dinner with Frank in New York to drop off Beth. They feel better knowing that she has family close by.

Jumping into the scene of her new home, Beth’s first moment is crashing a part at her Uncle Frank’s apartment. Opening the door is Wally (Peter Macdissi) who is so happy to see Beth and explains that he is Frank’s roommate. Almost immediately Beth ties one on that leads to a revelation about her Uncle that she had not even considered.

The next morning, Frank answers the phone to the news that his father Mac (Stephen Root) has passed. He must take the news in considering that there has been a distance between he and Mac through the years. Packing the car, Beth and Frank head back to southern waters. On the way he notices a car following them.

Well Wally is not about to be left out of the picture and joins the group home knowing that Frank has no intention of introducing him to the family. Accepting it, Wally is just happy to be going. On the way Beth notices that Uncle Frank is being sneaky about drinking and realizes that he has a problem. The closer they get to home the more he seems to be trying to numb himself.

Once home, Frank tries to comfort his mother Mammaw (Margo Martindale) along with other family members. As it sometimes is with families, there are secrets, lies, anger, turmoil and the need to come to terms with who they are in each other’s lives.

That is family.

Bettany as Frank Bledsoe is perfection! He takes us through the pain that keeps him away from his family and knowing that distance does not cure anything because it is only geography. The pain for Frank is so deep and he has carried it for so long that its starting to crack him once again. Bettany gives us every moment of that pain knowing that at some point his character is going to fall and never get back up again or rise with the help of those he loves to stand and face the past – we get both. What an amazing performance from a brilliant actor.

Lillis as Beth is equally stunning in her role. This is a young girl who knows that she does not fit into the southern thought or want to follow in the footsteps of the southern woman. Instead, she finds light in her path that Uncle Frank has put before her. Not realizing the pain that paved that road, she is thrilled to be set free. Once she learns the cost, there is nothing she would not do for Frank and Lillis gives us all the emotion that goes with it. Well done, so well done.

Macdissi as Wally is a dear to me because he reminds me of my brother. The garish, outlandish, outspoken and beloved man who also is a straight shooter. Keeping an eye on Frank isn’t an easy task which has caused Wally pain, yet he isn’t easily swayed from his goal – to keep love right where it belongs, with him. He is funny and absolutely adorable, thanks for reminding me of what I have been missing Macdissi – my brother would have loved you.

Zahn as Mike has issues that are ingrained in his southern upbringing. Closer to his Dad than Frank, he has been battling his own demons that have left a mark on his own family. Zahn is always present in his characters portrayal and I love that about his performances. Greer as Kitty wants what is best for her daughter and is a little more open minded than Mike. Martindale as Mammaw is everything and in this performance, although small, is so very important.

Root as Mac is, to me, the typical southern father who is set in his ways and if you try to go against that you will pay the price. He is a hard man filled with such hostility that it is absolutely gut wrenching to see the scene between the younger Frank and Mac. Root gives every drip of distain in this performance and yet, again, consider the upbringing and the source of it.

Other cast include Lois Smith as Aunt Butch, Cole Doman as young Frank, Jane McNeil as Neva, Caity Brewer as Marsha and Michael Perez as Sam Lassiter.

Amazon Prime offers television shows and original content included in its Amazon Prime subscription.

UNCLE FRANK is such a stunning film that unwraps family issues that are swimming in truths. Not to punish the south for being the south because I love the south for being quirky and just a tad different in thought. This film is the south that I did not understand as a kid but, as with many of the characters in the film, went along with because it was considered tradition.

The women were modest and discreet, the men were strong and ‘manly’ - both of these things couldn’t have been further from the truth. Behind the coiffed hair and the creased trousers were secrets that most would protect until death – and not always their own. That is what makes this film so important. Yes, it also deals with the pain of being unable to be who you know you are but it is so much more than that.

Bettany shows us the power of that pain and the life it creates hidden so perfectly that not only do people not notice, but if they do, they don’t - at least not openly. UNCLE FRANK is a story of everyone hiding, not just Frank, everyone lying, not just Frank and everyone being untrue to who they are – just like Frank.

Writer/director Alan Ball knows this all too well, “When I was thirteen years old, my beloved older sister was killed in a car accident; I was inside the car she was driving when it happened. In one horrible instant, my life was irrevocably separated into Before and After. I have spent a lot of time and energy trying to run away from that event – all of it wasted, as I can now see. There are some things that happen to us in life from where there is truly no escape”.

In the end – no home comes without baggage!

BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan

Jeri Jacquin

He's back! Coming Exclusively to Amazon Prime Video from director Jason Woliner is another chapter in this journalist’s life with BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM.

Borat Sagdiyev (Sasha Baron Cohen) has been spending a little time in prison in Kazakhstan since his last trip to the United States. After losing his home, livestock and sons, all he has left is his non-male daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova). Now, the leader is asking Borat to once again go to America and offer a monkey to bribe Donald Trump to gain favor.

Arriving, Borat waits for the arrival of the monkey only to find that daughter Tutar is in the crate. Realizing he'll be killed because of the failed mission; he offers up his daughter as an alternative gift.

Getting a phone and attempting to make over daughter Tutar to make her more appealing, his mission is to find Vice President Mike Pence and give him the gift. When the plan runs into a problem, they go through the rolodex of Trump men to find someone closer to him. Borat chooses someone very close to Trump - Rudy Giuliani.

With that choice comes more changes for Tutar but when Borat leaves her with a babysitter, she gets a lesson in what her father has taught her and what is true in the world. That is when Tutar decides she is going to go out into the world and become a journalist without her father and she starts by getting an interview with - Rudy Giuliani.

Feeling a bit of never-before-felt emotion, he now realizes that he does not want his daughter to follow the rules of Kazakstan and be happy. Now, Tutar is in a room with Giuliani and Borat breaks in to let her know that she does not need to be a gift to anyone.

They are definetly sheered from the same sheep!

Cohen as Borat puts on the suit once again and find the people who set our teeth on edge yet make us laugh at the same time. Pushing the limits as Cohen has always tended to do, he meets the most unusual people (and I am not sure that is a good thing but can’t be judgmental about it right? RIGHT?) who guide him on a path of chaos. Nice to see he has not lost his sense of twisted humor because gawd knows we all could use a bit of that right now.

Bakalova as Tutar is the young woman who believes everything her father, and the book, says. Once she gets to meet Jeanise, well, Borat is in for rebellion like he is never seen before. Bakalova is funny, charming, sweet and does some things that are going to give me nightmares for a little while but nothing traumatic. If I can sit through slasher films, I cannot complain. I mean I could but…

Amazon Prime offers television shows and original content included in its Amazon Prime subscription.

BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is going to send anyone who watches it into different types of tizzy. There are going to be those that are completely outraged (which is going to be kind of fun to read about), those that just can’t take that kind of humor (which is going to be kind of fun to read about) and those who take it all in whether they are outraged, grossed out, tripped up, and filled with uncomfortable laughter that turns into fall on the floor teary eyed laughs.

I tend to be the later since I am all for any kind of crazy right now as most people are. Cohen just lets Borat loose and the mayhem ensues quickly. Do we really expect anything less? Of course, I am very vague in my description of the film because I want each and every jaw drop, I had to be experienced freely. Why should I be the only one?

From creating songs for a Trump rally to going to a southern cotillion which, to be fair, I have always loved, Cohen checks in on anyone who will be offended by Borat. That being said, I think his time with the fax-man is hilarious. Seriously, who would send faxes like that and not stop to question it? Sweet guy though!

Now, there is a lot of talk about the scene where Tutar interviews Rudy Giuliani and, it must be said, it is so disturbing on the part of this supposed pillar of the political and legal community. From the moment Tutar sits down I am almost immediately creeped out. However, it is what happened after the interview that has my head spinning. Once more see it I think Giuliani has got some serious explaining to do and I’ll be listening.

BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM is not going to be for everyone and its going to definetly be zoom-meeting conversation. It would be even more hilarious if it weren’t so sadly apparent that this country needs to find itself again because the people in it have become so horribly lost.

Okay, blubbering over our ‘oh poor is us’, the film has some fantastic moments and right now I’m pretty okay with having a few fantastic moments.

In the end - a legend returns!

It is All About THE LIE

Jeri Jacquin

Coming from Amazon Prime, Welcome to Blumhouse and director Veena Sud is the story of what we tell ourselves and what we believe about THE LIE.

Rebecca (Mireille Enos) is raising daughter Kayla (Joey King) sharing awkward custody with ex-husband Jay (Peter Sarsgaard). That morning he is taking his daughter to dance camp and along the way Kayla sees her friend at the bus stop. Convincing Jay that they are both going to the same place, Brittany (Devery Jacobs) gets in the car.

Going down the road, Brittany wants to stop and use the restroom but all they have is the great outdoors. Waiting for the girls, Jay gets worried and goes looking for them only to hear a scream. Arriving at a bridge, Jay sees Kayla leaning as she tells her father Brittany is gone. In a panic he jumps to the river’s edge and only finds the girls wallet.

Trying to protect Kayla, Jay goes to Rebecca's work and gets her home. There, Kayla recounts to her mother what happened. Trying to keep their daughter safe, they are shocked with Brittany's father Sam (Cas Anvar) knocks on the door thinking that perhaps Kayla knows where his daughter is.

Rebecca and Jay realize that the only way to keep Kayla away from questions is to create questions of their own. Turning to law enforcement, everything begins to unravel and Kayla's attitude toward it all is a bit curious to say the least.

In a last-ditch effort to help their daughter, it is their worse fear come true!

Enos as Rebecca is a doing her best with a career and a teenage daughter that just does not seem to be happy about anything. Trying to have a new relationship plus dealing with an unreliable ex-husband, Enos delivers as we watch her character go from a well-manicured business woman to a falling apart mother.

Sarsgaard as Jay is an ex-husband who is fully aware, he failed, so much so that he allows the things his daughter says and does go without question. Making up for what he considers being a bad father, he is willing to chalk everything up to 'being a teenager' instead of what is really true about his daughter.

King as Kayla is a teen that needs discipline but is to busy playing games. That might be a bit of a personal opinion as I see the character of Kayla as annoying and a kid I would never want to hang around with - but that's just me. King puts in the work to make sure I feel this way for one shocking reason and no, I am not going to tell you what it is. King is growing as an actress and it's one leap after another.

Anvar as Sam is a neighbor who gets caught up in something that he doesn't understand. The constant confrontations with Rebecca, Jay and Kayla is nerve wrecking to watch. Anvar is an actor I enjoy watching because he consistently chooses unexpected roles with very cool results.

Other cast include Devery Jacobs as Brittany, Patti Kim as Detective Kenji Tagata, and Nicholas Lea as Detective Rodney Barnes.

Amazon Prime offers television shows and original content included in its Amazon Prime subscription.

Blumhouse Productions is known for producing horror films such as PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, INSIDIOUS, SINISTER, THE PURGE, THE GIFT, GET OUT, HAPPY DEATH DAY and SPLIT. The films from Blumhouse have become instant classics and they continue to give us something to scream about! See more at www.blumhouse.com

THE LIE is a story of family dysfunction, a teen with serious issues, refusing to do the right thing over and over and having it all come crumbling right in front of the family's eyes. I have a sneaky suspicion that people will be talking to their screens about as much as I did! Not that we want to be involved in it all but that there is this feeling that someone, anyone has to.

Keeping the story simple there is not a lot of scene changes or cgi, instead, THE LIE slowly unravels dedicated to the story each character is trying to tell about themselves and who they really are. Confronting their mistakes towards one another comes only at the expense of a tragedy. The ending is a jaw dropper!

In the end - it was an accident!

Taken from the bestselling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys is a irreverent take on superheroes and abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good.

Eric: The fan reaction has been incredible and exceeded all of our expectations. Without blowing smoke we are a hit. People are responding to the superhero bit turning it on its head. They are falling in love with the characters due to the amazing cast. They are also reacting to the satire and the social commentary and we worked hard to layer that in. It's very gratifying and we are all so proud of it. In season two it’s a lot more intense. We worked hard to make season two crazier but also more emotional and higher stakes. Everyone is in a really tight spot, The Boys are wanted fugitives and hunted and totally screwed. They are fighting back as hard as they can and season one was hard for them. Homelander killed the only person who could control him so he's increasingly out of control. He is making it a scarier place. Starlight is trapped in this nightmare. Everyone is pushed to the limits. We tried to make this not the most realistic show ever made but make it a commentary on the up to the minute world we live in. It’s a strange world of politics and social media and says so much about the world we are in and we try to put in sharp commentary. For instance, in season one we took on the MeToo Movement with Starlight, the American weapons industry and politics. In season two we continue that and probably make that even more edgy because I can say we are going after white supremacy; white nationalism and we are going after systemic racism and all of those things really effing suck. The three triangles are strong characters, madness and if we can sneak in revelations about the real world, we do that too. You will see that in season two.

(the trailer they showed will make you yell Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!)
Karl: That is the weirdest thing that I've done in my carrier. I think for everyone else but Jack it was a really fun scnee to shoot.

Jack: And Karl was actually driving.

Karl: That was one of the things that I was surprised and thrilled about is that you had all of the actors in the boat with a helicopter flying parallel to us and you never get to really experience something for real anymore. But we were out ther eon the water doing horrendous speeds and having fun except for Jack.

Karen: I was so surprised because I thought a stunt person was going to drive it but it was Karl and I was getting motion sickness after about three hours.

Karl: They built a prosthetic whale that was on the beach and we actually end up inside the whale without giving to much away and it was a pretty surreal experience and pretty hot and stinky in the Canadian summer.

Eric: I want to add to that that the best professional moment as the crew said we are not really building a whale are we and I said yes, it’s going to be 40 feet long and 11 feet high. We knew it was a huge project and it was so expensive too and it makes the scene work. It’s a dead thing with an explosive belly and one of the prouder moments as a producer.

Jack: The cast gave me so much guff about being covered in blood in season one but now they know.

Karl: At the end of season's was a game changer for Billy. His objective was to really find Rebecca and rescue her and get his wife back. Season one was Butcher looking for blind revenge and season two is to save her and the moral questions that arise for that. It's particularly pertinent when we see Butcher would turn his back on the boys if he could inflict pain and suffering and there is a certain evolution in season two where he has some tough choices to make whether he will be able to achieve his goal to get Rebecca or again jeopardize his team. That was a lot of fun to play. Season two has a lot of interesting pair ups that I really enjoyed getting to work with Aaron and Starlight which is an unlikely pairing. That’s what season two does is throw unlikely couples bounce off each other and interact.

Laz: In season one this guy is painfully lonely and desperate for connection and part of this was Elisabeth Shue but she wasn't letting Homelander finish his mission. He dealt with his complex in season one and in season two is very internal and there is nothing more internal than milk so it has a way to connect the dots between season one and two. He finds traces of Stillwell and reconnects that way and that is a moment of pure connection. I think in a lot of ways that is the duality of the character, these guys have done a great job playing both sides of that. The strongest physical man on the show is the emotionally weakest. There is also this weird parenting thing where you say I can say what I want about my kid, but you can't.

Jack: Season one was transformative and blossoming, it is interesting because Butcher from Hughie's perspective betrayed everyone. Now he's left there, he's alone and feels terrible about lying to Annie all during season one. He's super alone and has nothing then he starts realizing 'what do I do now? Do I keep this going?' and he does that by sneaking in a few conversations with Annie which he's not supposed to since they are on the run. Something I really found fascinating that Eric did with Hughie is that he latches on to people who tell him what to do and in season two he's starting to realize how he can do that on his own and realize who he is and what he wants to do rather than what others want him to do. There is one moment early on where Butcher comes back, and Hughie isn't happy about it. After that Hughie says, 'I never love it, I never 'effin love it!' so he's standing up for himself and owning himself a little more. He still screams a lot but he's coming into his own.

Erin: What was fun about season two and what I think people will find satisfying about her trajectory is that she steps into her own power and her objectives stay the same. She wants to be the best superhero in the world, but she's forced to adapt to the dark world she's been exposed to. That's where some the interesting story comes in where Hughie has broken her heart and has residual feelings for. The only way both of them can achieve their goals is to get over it yet there is still tension and chemistry. It's confusing because Butcher shot her and yet she has to join forces with him. Her objective stays the same, but she hardens a lot because of season one. A really thick wall goes up with her going from naïve and gullible and having their heart broken by everyone they love, and the wall is too thick to compensate for it all. She's still doing the same thing in terms of trying to save the world but a little bit inaccessible. She balances the line between being informed and finding herself again. There's a lot going on. With A-Train I don't think the interaction is positive but mutual figuring out on how to handle each other. She has to blackmail him but she's uncomfortable with it. He doesn't respond to well to it.

Jessie: Starlight doesn't know what A-Train knows and there is a lot of figuring out going on there. Physically A-Train is in bad shape, he has abused Compound B and him being an athlete. There are so many things he's been running from for so long that now he has to stop and face these things. He is fueled by hate and rage pinning it on other people even though he did it to himself. He is attaching negative emotions to every aspect of his life and its a lot to come face to face with. The end of season one was a lot of confusion, misplaced anger and it is a lot and unfortunate that he takes it out on other people. For him he doesn't think there is any other way, he feels like its his safe haven instead of realizing its his own self destruction. He is willing to keep it, to die for it, to kill for it. He's almost a pretty sad case and ruthless because his decisions are always the worst ones. It's like he doesn't care what he loses in the process. That's what I like about the show, in a world with superhero's the ones you know, and love aren't the only ones that exist. There are quite a few people that have the same abilities as him. In the back of his mind he's thinking there are more super speeders than him. He's willing to do whatever it takes to keep that top spot. In season two we will learn why that's so important because a lot of what he deals with is fear, he's afraid of a lot of things that could happen. He's afraid of his own nightmares but they also drive him to do some really crazy stuff. Despite knowing better, he can't help himself. He's a guy who aims his problem and in season one he aimed it at Hughie, he just needs someone to blame like he does Hughie for the death of his girlfriend. He's so dependent on Compound B that it blurs his vision, so he keeps running, keeps going and don't look back and don't deal. They physical aspect gets snatched from him so now he has to deal with it.

Laz: It was interesting working through with Eric, why is Mother's Milk with The Boys? In season one he has a family, a daughter he cares so much about, a wife he is subservient too, he cooks tilapia for her. Why would he risk all that to join the band of misfits? What I love is he was addicted to B because of his family working at factory's but in our version of The Boys and our ecosystem that's not the case. Eric kind of beautifully created this infection with being a fighter of freedom. That's what he is infected with, risking what he has in the pursuit of justice. Even if it doesn't mean justice for him but if its justice for his daughter who is the future than it is worth the fight, so I love that take on this character. There was a lot of emotional intelligence that I had to bring to this character so I could become the voice of morality. To keep from going so far over the edge that we forget why we are here and what we are fighting for. When we have a scene together as a group and planning what to do, what would Mother's Milk do? Try to steer the group in that direction. I think there is a tremendous amount of "hold on guys, let’s think about what we are going to do", sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. You need someone to say 'hold on a minute' and you need someone to be the conscious of the group, I see Mother's Milk as the good angel on the shoulder saying 'let’s not jump off the cliff yet'.

Chace: The Deep is really going through it, the first season I was with other actors and other characters but it’s been very interested quite literally being on my own journey. I think being in Ohio was tough for him, like quarantine, started out making margaritas then drinking from the bottle. He was in a very, very dark place. He is not very self-aware and I think he was finally confronted with his own inner turmoil figuring out who he is. He was pulled into a certain spiritual journey and goes on a few different quests to find love and a connection in that way. There is some humor in there like on the whale, I think he wants to be back in the seven, it was fun. He was totally wrapped up in his identity and when stuck in Sandusky Ohio at a water park you are really confronted with not knowing who you are. Someone joins him from his past and it’s a very interesting story line.

Karen: Having no lines is very freeing and some of the cast say that would love to not have any lines. It’s definitely a challenge as an actor having no lines, even in season two we dive into more of her psyche and her emotional state more than her physical side. A fulfilling challenge. For the physical bits I work with a trainer in Toronto and a stunt coordinator and he helps us learn all the bits ahead of time, so we are comfortable on the day. I think it’s a balance of training your fitness to build the muscle and then learning the choreography so it’s already in your skin. We did something called the Black Widow stunt and we got it on camera with me doing it. Season two will learn more about her relationship with her history also alters her relationship with Frenchie a little bit. It's interesting to see different sides of her come out and growing into her own womanhood and individuality.

Tomer: In season two, the audience gets a chance to peek through the window of all the characters including Frenchie which you are going to get a sneak peek of his origin story. Being a comic book fan, I loved this stuff so much. The chance to get to know the character and how Frenchie got into The Boys and learn his real name. It was exciting to me as an actor and I can't wait for fans to see that. All season one he hung on to the most beautiful thing to take care of which was a female, season two she can't take it anymore and spread her wings and start talking. Frenchie is in a lonely spot and deal with his traumas and there are a lot of them. That's what I love about this season is that the stories are so well taken care of that I was amazed by everyone's performance in a much deeper and further away, it was amazing.

Aya: Stormfront is a new character, I knew the backstory and I was given some sides that show her social media savvy and what is going on underneath. Eric and I chatted about what was going to happen and I knew who she was. I was really excited to play her mainly because I think I thought there was no chance they would let me play her. Then Eric let me do it. I look for things that I'm necessarily good at because that's the fun about being an actor is doing new stuff. What I think is so great about The Boys coming in as a fan is that it’s so topical and it allows us to look at current issues with some sort of distance and see them clearer. When you are watching something that is in a heightened world you sort of listen better. I was really excited about that, not to say there weren't hard moments being a human being playing a role of someone I violently disagree with, but my job as an actor is to find the humanity and go to the ugly gross parts of ourselves. It's Eric's job to tell what happens to a character and hopefully he punishes her.

Eric: We try to apply the most stringent relaity to how that character would really behave if they had those powers. So, they are prone to the types of challenges and potential corruption tha thappens when you get so much power in excess.

Seth: Thank you for watching The Boys. Because this show has fans and is watched by people like you, they have decided to renew for a new season.

Evan: Who knows what things we make will move forward or shut down.

Seth: We don't know when we can do it. We hope you enjoy the third season as much as you enjoy the second season.

Her Story is Nothing Short of RADIOACTIVE

Jeri Jacquin

Coming exclusively to Amazon Prime Video from director Marjane Satrapi and Amazon Studios is the amazing biographical story of a woman who made the world RADIOACTIVE.

Maria Sklodowska (Rosamund Pike) is a young woman who has the greatest interest in science but gets no respect from her male counterparts. It is 1870s Paris, and Maria is an Polish immigrant, physicist and chemist woman who doesn't quite fit in with her male counterparts as the University of Paris.

On a walk with her nose in a book she meets Pierre Curie (Sam Riley) and makes quite the impression on him. Her concerns aren't to find romance, but to fight with other professors about losing her lab as they don't feel her work has merit. They meet again when Pierre Curie wants to share laboratory space with Maria because he knows about her work.

Along with friend Paul Langevin (Aneurin Barnard), the wood begins and so does a marriage between Pierre and Maria. Her work is the study of uranium rays and it is Pierre's invention of an electrometer that gives Marie the boost she needs to created a new theory about the study of the atom.

Her work, and then joined by husband Pierre, would bring about the elements of Polonium and Radium creating the word Radioactivity.  In 1903, Marie along with Pierre and Henri Becquerel the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work. They couple used the money to fund more research and their life was about to change in ways she could never anticipated.

Marriage, children, life, death, rumors, treatment of women during the era, the unrecognized work of women not just in everyday life but women of science that contributed so much to the world - Madam Curie was one such woman.

Pike as Marie is a perfect choice to play this role. She has the amazing ability to bring about an intensity that isn't over the top but definitely in-your-face. I enjoyed her portrayal with a such loyalty to her work, her family and refused to change anything in order to satisfy the status quo. The only people that seem to understand that about her was Pierre, her sister and Langevin and the latter brought difficulties. Pike stands strong, tall and even when her character crashes, it is only temporary toward her goal - the search for scientific knowledge.

Riley as Currie is a man who saw something almost immediately about Maria. Discovering a kindred spirit in so many ways it is easy to see why Currie fell for Maria. Riley has a proven track record of diversity in his role choice from MALEFICENT, and the awesome Mr. Darcy in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES, a son trying to find a deep connect with a father in SOMETIMES ALWAYS NEVER to the stunning role in RADIOACTIVE. This role gives Riley the chance to be the stable force for Maria and he does so with love and compassion - beautifully done.

Barnard as Langevin is the friend who sees the potential of Pierre and Maria. As their discovery takes on more and more time, Langevin never hesitates to support the lab and the work. Barnard then finds himself in a place that causes distress and that's when Maria must take control once again.

Other cast include Yvette Feuer as Carla, Simon Russell Beale as Professor Lippmann, Sian Brooke as Bronia Sklodowska, Drew Jacoby as Loie Fuller, and Katherine Parkinson as Jeanne Langevin.

In Currie's search for scientific knowledge she had to bang up against men who didn't believe in her science and a society that could easily be judgmental and harsh. Yet she kept on as the film shows the good and the bad of her scientific discoveries. That is the downside of finding new things in our world, there is always someone that can find a poor use for it.

RADIOACTIVE is a period piece and that adds to much richness to the film. From the darkness of the labs and the flickering lights of the Currie home, this is the way you slowly bring a viewer into a story and director Satrapi does so brilliantly.

Amazon Studios has been bringing some amazing choices in entertainment and with so many of us hungry for an escape, experiencing the story of a woman who is part of our history is an excellent way to do that. RADIOACTIVE is a must-see in such a way that I can't wait to see it again. Pike and Riley brings us the best and brightest to a story that needed to be told.

In the end - she was a pioneer, a genius and a rebel!

Amazon Studios Brings the Emergency Code 7500 to Prime

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Amazon’s own channel Amazon Prime this Thursday from writer/director Patrick Vollrath is a dilemma that one man must face when calling 7500.

Captain Lutzmann (Carlo Kitzlinger) and co-pilot Tobias Ellis (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) are flying an Airbus A319 from Berlin to Paris. Sharing the ride is stewardess Gokce (Aylin Tezel) who is mother of Ellis’ young son. Keeping work and home life separate, a very few know they are a couple. The take off goes smoothly and they are quickly in the air.

Within minutes of the flight, a disturbance happens outside as terrorist Kalkan (Passar Hariky), Kenan (Murathan Muslu) and young Vedat (Omid Memar) attempt to gain entry to the cockpit. The pilot is wounded as Ellis manages to keep two out and knowing out the third. Trying to help the pilot, it becomes clear that Ellis is going to have to fly the plane.

Kalkan and Vedat continue to pound on the door making it clear they are going to do whatever it takes to gain entry. Kalkan goes as far as to threaten the lives of passenger’s if the door isn’t opened. Vedat translates to Ellis but one thing is clear – Ellis can not open the door.

Knowing that it is Kalkan who is in control, Ellis tries reason, but it only agitates the situation. Now Ellis must rely on his composure when everything seems out of control and do everything possible until they are able to land. Each moment brings the flight closer to being able to land – but will it?

Gordon-Levitt as Ellis brings a powerful performance to a frightening story. Making plans for his young son’s education seemed to be the only care he had. When the hijacking starts, Gordon-Levitt is uber-focused, and it shows every frame of the film. The power in each thing that happens is intense, yet this actor adds a drop more for good measure until you realize you have blinked in a while. Excellent performance with an topic that is difficult to address.

Hariky as Kalkan is determined and nothing or no one will get in the way of his ultimate goal. Even when it seems everything is falling apart, Hariky’s character stares into the camera outside the cockpit with a glare that exudes fear and says, “try me!”.

Memar as Vedat is a young man that is absolutely troubled by what is happening but also feels a sense of hopelessness when he realizes this is not what he expected. Wanting to do what’s right as a person and what he’s been told is right as a hijacker, I think Vedat becomes more and more dangerous because of the fear he feels. There is a moment when the phone rings and Vedat falls apart that is nothing short of heartbreaking.

Other cast include: Hicham Sebiai as Hopper, Paul Wollin as Daniel, Cornel Nussbaum as Peter, Max Schimmelpfennig as the student and Nathalie (Aurelie Thepaut).

Amazon Prime offers television shows and original content included in its Amazon Prime subscription.

7500 brings every bead of intensity and it is palpable from start to finish. It twists, turns and does not go the way that is expected but, then again, that would make for a movie of the week instead of a well-done film by Amazon Studios.

Shot in real time and an amazing set that feels and looks like the cockpit of an airplane only lends believability to the story. Even the sounds of the aircraft and the lights lend itself to a character that the story is trying to tell.

What starts as a five man show whittles its way down to a one on one and who can keep it together until the situation is resolved. That is when the minutes drag by so slowly and it is Gordon-Levitt as Ellis who the viewer counts on to do what is right and make the hard choices– no matter the cost. When they refer to the people as “souls on board”, this films situation brings that more into focus.

Watch on a big screen, watch with the lights down and watch performances that will stay with you long after the story ends.

In the end – the distress code is only the beginning!

THE VAST OF NIGHT is a Fantastic Era Sci-Fi Thriller

Jeri Jacquin

Currently on Amazon Prime from writer/director Andrew Patterson is a fantastic look at one night looking up into the sky with THE VAST OF NIGHT.

It is a warm night in New Mexico in 1950 when Fay (Sierra McCormick) takes over the switchboard for her mother. What Fay genuinely wants to do is use her new tape recorder to interview people. Guiding her along is Everett (Jake Horowitz), a radio DJ at WOTW that everyone in town listens to on the local station.

While a sporting event is going on at the high school, strange things are happening that Fay and Everett are taking notice of. Fay is experiencing strange telephone calls from townsfolk about
noises they are hearing and then the calls drop. Fay calls Everett to ask if any of his callers are noticing strange happenings as well.

That's when Everett receives a telephone call from a man named Billy (Bruce Davis) who claims to know what has been going on in the world. He tells them a story that leaves Fay and Everett stunned but even more shocking is the proof the caller offers that leads them straight to a forgotten tape in the local library.

Both Fay and Everett know that it is time to do everything possible to discover what is happening to their small town before word spreads as fast as the panic!

McCormick as Fay is a character ahead of her time. Gifted with a recorder, she wants to learn to interview people about their stories. She sees a career for herself outside the small dusty little town in New Mexico. She is clearly smart, clever and on the hunt for answers. McCormick gives her character everything she needs to succeed, even a bit of healthy fear. Her performance is stunning.

Horowitz as Everett is the town big guy because, after all, he is the DJ of the radio station! There was a time when radio stations were the gods of bringing music to the masses. They could walk down the street and have people be in awe. Horowitz pulls that off marvelously and when the time comes to jump in with Fay, he becomes as serious about every move they make. This is a dynamic duo and I was all in every step of the way.

Other cast include Cheyenne Barton as Bertsie, Mark Banik as Gerald, Gregory Peyton as Benny, Rodkey Oliver as Adam, Mallorie Rodak as Susan, Mollie Milligan as Marjorie, Ingred Fease as Gretchen, Brandon Stewart as Sam, Krik Griffith as Lon and Gail Cronauer as Mabel Blanche.

THE VAST OF NIGHT is actually quite brilliantly done. Not only is it set in a time where it was a new thing to hear and see the stories of UFO's and such, but everything about the film harks back to the 1950's.

The cast bring it all together reeling me into their journey but along with the costuming, cars, music and gathering of a town at the local gymnasium on a Friday night is reminiscent to me. I am the type that has to be drawn in hook, line and sinker and THE VAST OF NIGHT does just that.

It is not an 'in your face' story or an explosion of aliens but instead the sleuthing of Fay and Everett who are not about to sit around and be taken over by something they do not understand. These two are on the case, as it were, to discover what is true and how they can stop it if that is even something they can do.

Writers Patterson and Craig W. Sanger have made every effort to make the audience believe they are in New Mexico in the 1950's but they have also added homages to other films and filmmakers. The radio station WOTW where Everett is a DJ stands for 'War of the Worlds' from the H.G. Wells classic, the character of Renny is Michael Rennie who was Klaatu in the 1951 THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. Even the town of Cayuga gives homage to Rod Serling's Cayuga Productions.

The relationship between Fay and Everett was a straight joy to watch. This is a film that I would highly recommend for those who want to sit back and have a good yarn be told with the lights off and a bowl of popcorn.

In the end - the answers are in what they hear!
