WE BURY THE DEAD

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres from writer/director Zak Hilditch and Vertical is the story of loss and a journey as WE BURY THE DEAD.

A military disaster in Western Australia has led to the most unusual happening as the dead seem to come back to ‘life’. Considered harmless and slow-moving, a large portion of the country is a quarantine zone. Families are grieving not knowing what has happened to their family members. Ava (Daisy Ridley) is one such woman looking for her husband who was on a business trip in Tasmania, when the outbreak happened.

The only way for Ava to go and find him is volunteering to go inside the quarantine zone to go from house to house bringing out the dead – and the living dead. Partnered up with Clay (Brenton Thwaites), a rouge that clearly isn’t worried about the dead and isn’t scared of those that aren’t. Once inside the zone, Ava makes her plan to get to the resort where her husband was last and is surprised when Clay decides to go along for the adventure.

Once on the road, the only thing that they must be concerned with are the military convoys on the road that could stop them from their trip. Stopping for break, they come face to face with Riley (Mark Coles Smith), clearly with the military who separates Ava and Clay while he figures out who they are and what they are doing on the road. Ava knows that this could end her search but her determination is stronger than anything that will stop her!

Ridley as Ava is a woman driven to find her husband by putting herself at risk to get to him. The emotion she carries with her is complex but it pushes her further and further down the road. She notices that the living dead seem to have something left unsaid but the further she goes down the road, there are changes. Each situation that comes up, Ridley gives her character moments of pure humanity and other moments pure survival and it works beautifully. It is riveting to watch her expression be so stoic in the midst of chaos, but then I think ‘that is exactly how I would be’. Trust is a detriment and complacency is deadly!

Thwaites as Clay has such a casual attitude toward what is going on clearing the dead, yet when he has a chance to do something exciting, he’s all in. There is a connection with Ava as to their goal with both having their own stories. Thwaites provides the film with that mysterious element of ‘why would anyone do this?’ in regards to going into the quarantine zone while also offering to go where no one is allowed. That’s the rebellious side of Clay and it balances Ava’s determination.

Smith as Riley – all I can say is wow! This is the part where I don’t talk about the story more because he does such an amazing job yet I want the viewer to experience it for themselves. What I can say is that Smith provides the unexpected element in so many ways. Smith is suspicious of everything and everyone adding yet another layer to an already complex story.

Other cast include Chloe Hurst as Katie, Kym Jackson as Lt. Wilkie, Dan Paris as Cpt. Vance, Salme Geransar as Pvt. Clarkson, Kim Fleming as the Colonel and Matt Whelan as Mitch.

Vertical Entertainment is a global independent distributor that offers a unique wealth of experience minus the studio costs. Film such as MY MOTHER’S WEDDING, I DON’T UNDERSTAND YOU, FIGHT OR FLIGHT and IN THE LOST LANDS are only a few of the film the studio has brought forward. For more please visit www.vert-ent.com.

Writer/director Hilditch explains, “There’s also something disturbingly poetic about the bodies we see throughout the film who simply dropped dead in the middle of whatever it was they were doing the moment of the pulse. This isn’t a virus; it’s people just going about their lives who simply stopped living due to a military mishap. The added element of the increasingly disgruntled victims who won’t stay down is one that I also think puts a fresh spin on the well-worn zombie genre and keeps the tension dialed up throughout. While themes of grief and closure are the beating heart of this movie, I want the audience to be terrified of this as a genre film, but a genre film that offers a different take on the well-worn zombie tropes.”

WE BURY THE DEAD is a unique and complex story in the zombie genre providing a different picture of dealing with the dead and living dead. What Hilditch has done is allow the groundwork to be laid by adding an uncustomary daymare in the realm of several issues. There is grief, loss, the unknown, chaos, suspicion, stealth just to name a few. Ridley, Thwaites and Smith are on their own, literally, to guide us through the formidable result of populace event under no one’s control!

Using Western Australia as the backdrop of the story allows for long stretches of road and quiet chaos watching the characters develop at their own pace, I love that. Steve Annis, Director of Photography, does an outstanding job of providing those visuals but I’d expect that knowing his work on the AppleTV+ series FOUNDATION (one of my favorites!). Jason Baird provides the very unusual look for the living dead that proves to be a tad frightening at first and then jaw dropping.

WE BURY THE DEAD is a unique and emotional journey that, for me, was unexpected and riveting. This is not an action packed, bloody and chaotic film but instead a slow burn that is urged on by complex human emotions that are both good, bad and frightening.

In the end – volunteer needed!

I MET A GIRL is an Emotional Rollercoaster

Jeri Jacquin

Coming from Gravitas Ventures and director Luke Eve is the story of love, reality and what can change a life in I MET A GIRL.

Devon (Brenton Thwaites) loves music and brother Nick (Joel Jackson) and trusts that he will be there always. That is sometimes difficult for Nick as Devon has schizophrenia and relies heavily on Nick to get through his days and remind him to take his medication. Nick marries the lovely Olivia (Zahra Newman) and they are soon expecting a baby.

When Devon has an episode, he meets Lucy (Lily Sullivan) and in one night finds himself completely in love. Thrilled to share with Nick the news, the arrange a dinner but Lucy doesn't arrive leaving his brother to wonder - is there really a Lucy?

Trying and trying to make Nick believe him turns into a disaster that Devon now knows has only one remedy. In hand is her note 'meet me in Sydney', that is exactly what he does. Take it upon himself to find any means necessary to find the woman who has shown him the healing power of love.

More importantly, Devon must discover for himself what it takes to be stronger in mind and heart.

Thwaites as Devon takes us on a roller coaster ride of emotions, feelings, fears, heart and a gentleness that serves him well. This is a difficult role to play as Thwaites takes on a combination of what is real and what lives in Devon's mind. With the good and the frightening fighting for his attention, waiting for Devon to find himself and accept life his own terms takes patience of our own.

Jackson as Nick is a brother who has found that a lot of his life is centered around Devon. From causing problems with his job and leaving little time for his new bride, the pressure becomes something of a guilt when there is no other choice than to place him in a facility. When Nick finally tells Devon what his life has been like, it is a moment that breaks the heart.

Sullivan as Lucy is the object of Devon's affection and he will stop at nothing to find her. She is sweet, funny and clever and it is easy to see why Devon cannot stop until he finds her once again. Newman as Olivia tries too hard to be understanding, and even when pregnant still tries to be but she also has to consider her own family that is coming together.

Other cast include: Anita Hegh as Patricia, Liam Graham as Fergus, the frightening Anni Finsterer as Miss Needles and Peter Rowsthorn as Mr. Rocket.

Gravitas Ventures searches for thought-provoking features and documentaries and stays in the forefront providing exceptional film product to audiences worldwide. For more of what they have to offer please visit www.gravitasventures.com.

I MET A GIRL is definitely a story of love but there are so many layers to this film you definitely cannot turn away for a moment. Thwaites do not give the viewer one moment of rest because Devon does not get one moment of rest. He is fighting the world he has come to know and the two most powerful visions that will not let him go.

The casting of Thwaites is well one done as he brings so much to the character of Devon. His performance brings us to care for the story, the journey and the hope that something will change in his life for the better. That is a powerful message to bring to audiences.

In the end - what if the woman of your dreams was all in your head?

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: Dead Men Tell No Tales Sails onto Bluray

Jeri Jacquin

Jack is back coming to Bluray/DVD and Digital HD as directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg along with Walt Disney Pictures is PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) is a young man who wants one thing – to see his father Will Turner permanently returned to dry land. What he needs is Poseidon’s Trident and the map that will lead him there to break the curse holding his father deep in the ocean.

Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) is a young woman who holds a map to the where the trident is and only she can read it. Basically it’s because she can read the stars where as most pirates can’t, well, read.

Someone who can help them is Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) but he’s not having the best lucky with a crew lately. As if that’s not enough, Henry tells Jack that a ghost named Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) pretty much wants his head on a platter.

Unphased by the prospect of losing his head, Jack is more focused on what he’s always focused on – getting his hands on the Pearl! When Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) comes upon the hair flowing Captain Salazar, a deal is struck to find Jack together.

Jack, Henry and Carina try to stay one step ahead of Barbossa and Barbossa tries to stay two steps ahead of Salazar. As they all get closer to the prize, there are still scores to settle and a few surprises for them all.

This is the life of a pirate!

Depp as Jack Sparrow puts a period at the end of his time as a pirate. His usual throwing caution to the wind and not being upset by much, Depp throws out lines and facial reactions that continue to make us all laugh. Jack Sparrow is endearing and even to the very end he seems to be able to come out with what he truly wants.

Thwaites as Henry Turner is a young actor that is able to pull off the role of a kid who just wants his Dad back. Becoming somewhat of an expert on the legends of the sea, Thwaites is charming, caring and daring all rolled into one. Scodelario as Carina is a smart young woman who is misunderstood by, well, pirates. Looking for the trident is her mission to finding her own family.

Rush as Barbossa is his usual peg-legged self who wants to keep the money rolling in and going up against Jack is just topping on the cake. Bardem as Salazar is kind of creepy but then again he is a tad upset at Jack so we have to let him get out his frustration. The cgi around his character is more than a tad disturbing and cool at the same time.

Other cast include Kevin McNally as Gibbs, David Wenham as Scarfield, Stephen Graham as Scrum, Adam Brown as Cremble, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. There is also a cameo appearance that had the audience cheering so look out for that!

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment began distributing under its own label in 1980 and continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: Dead Men Tell No Tales is a fantastical journey’s we have all enjoyed with Captain Jack Sparrow. Although the film brings the story full circle and the special effects are pretty darn cool, it is almost addictive how we all keep coming back for more! Of course we would because it’s Disney film!

It has been an adventure from 2003 until now with characters that are memorable and have become iconic. Disney has done a good job in wrapping up this series of films in such a way that no will be disappointed.

Everyone jumps on board for another adventure and a few surprises as well. This is fun for the family filled with laughs, adventure, action and characters that once again have us cheer for our favorite pirate. Of course no one else will ever be Jack Sparrow so thanks for that Johnny Depp!

So prepare matey’s for a journey through the sea of adventure.

In the end – it is the final tale of a pirate’s life!
