Russell Simmons’ DEF COMEDY JAM ALL STARS Returns

Jeri Jacquin

On DVD is an amazing collection packed with laughs from Time Life is the 12-disc set of Russell Simmons’ DEF COMEDY JAM ALL STARS Collection.

In 1992, I had the cable channel HBO (known as Ho-Bo back in the day) and a new series premiered – Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam and it was an instant smash. Friday nights would never be the same after that! Friends came to my house with food and good times as we all gathered to laugh ourselves silly and jaw dropped at what we heard.

Martin Lawrence would be the first to come to the stage for the series offering his own look into Black culture and humor. He explains that ‘def’ is what a Black person says when something is cool or off the charts. This comedian also introduces Chris Tucker to the world and later, Bernie Mack and Bill Bellamy.

Continuing to show viewers even more, Dave Chappelle came in strong. To keep the audience on track, Heavy D., Kid n’ Play, Kenny Anderson, Big Daddy Kane, Pepa, Q-Tip, the Wu-Tang Clan and Wesley Snipes would take their turn in the spotlight. HBO recognized what Simmons already knew, that the show was a marvel in its own right with originality.

Time Life continues to bring never before released anywhere classic collections of television shows for fans to revisit and remember what has made television so special. Time Life has released Mama’s Family, CPO Sharkey and The Tonight Show and they now remind of us of a time when sex and politics were up for grabs with ROWAN & MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN. For more of what Time Life has to offer fans of classic television visit www.timelife.com.

Bonus Features of the set include Bonus Episode “2 Raw 4 TV”, Bonus DVD: Shaq & Cedric the Entertainer Present: All Star Comedy Jam and a 24-page Def Comedy Jam Collector Booklet.

Russell Simmons grew up in Queens, New York and would literally become a mogul becoming part of anything he could get his hands into. From music being the co-founder of Def Jam Records to clothing with Phat Farm and Baby Phat lines, Russell even wrote seven books about success. Through DEF COMEDY JAM, the laugh world would come to know so many more comedians that are still making us laugh today.

Martin Lawrence skyrocketed into his own stratosphere going from the television screen to the big screen with such movies as DO THE RIGHT THING, BOOMERANG and BAD BOYS. Cedric the Entertainer continues on with The Kings of Comedy and also to films such as MADAGASCAR and BARBERSHOP.

Bill Bellamy would take his appearances on DEF COMEDY JAM and turn it into even more success going on to host MTV JAMS and onto the 90’s film with HOW TO BE A PLAYER (which is one of my sons’ favorites). Earthquake and Mike Epps made their comedy stand on the Def stage as well.

Let’s not forget the funny ladies as well! Adele Givens is the 1990 grand-prize winner of comedy at the historic Regal Theater in Chicago and would also becomes one of the QUEENS OF COMEDY. Her talent came to television with Moesha and The Hughleys before hitting the silver screen with THE PLAYERS CLUB and BEAUTY SHOP (one of my own personal favorites).

Tiffany Haddish made her young Def Comedy appearance and quickly made her way to The Carmichael Show and jumping to the big screen with Queen Latifah in GIRLS TRIP. The Queen also came to the stage later in the show’s running but made a lasting impression.

Sheryl Underwood took to the Def Jam stage and also appeared in the film BEAUTY SHOP (well, sort of but she’s awesome) and hosted the Daytime Emmy Awards. That’s all speaks of success for the Little Rock native.

Another well known name in comedy is that of Kevin Hart. It was only the beginning as Hart has made his way through the television, big screen and friendship with Dwayne Johnson. That relationship brought fantastic on-screen chemistry in the film JUMANJI.

D.L. Hughley brought his own brand of comedy to the stage and it translated into the BET show Comic View and eventually to television with The Hughleys. Steve Harvey also brought his comedy to the show and eventually also became part of the KINGS OF COMEDY. Besides his funny side which can be seen on Family Feud, he has a very philosophical side with a daytime show.

Other names of comedy that are totally recognizable is that of Tracy Morgan of Saturday Night Live fame and FRIDAY film star Chris Tucker. Finally, Wayans royalty as Damon Wayans Jr. takes his turn to make the audience laugh although, he already did that with his 1994 film BLANKMAN.

Time Life recognizes the vast richness of what Russell Simmons brought to HBO and recognize the best and brightest performances. This 12-disc DVD set if not only for those of us who remember it from the show’s very beginning, but for every generation after to see where these extraordinary performers took their talent.

Just as I did in 1992, Russel Simmons’ DEF COMEDY JAM had me laughing just has much and probably even harder now. Of course, there is the thing of seeing them all so young and remembering ‘oh jeez, was I ever that young too?’, it was an enjoyable time of binge laughing,

So, gather the pals from the 90’s and relive some classic comedy and then add to the group because the food will be good, the company will be awesome and the laughs will be non-stop!

In the end – see how excellence in comedy was born!

Shrinking to a small size, she is attacked by a large rate and rescued one of her very own toys – the Nutcracker named George!

They all arrive in the Land of Flowers only to be chased by soldiers and Queen Charlotte that is when George begins to remembers his life. His step-mother and step-brother Philip cast a spell turning him into the Nutcracker and tossed aside. The problem is that Marie needs him back in her room but learn that George is actually Prince George.

An agreement is made that Marie and her friends will help George and in return he goes back to help break the spell. Going back to the castle is the first step to stop the Queen from keeping the King in a trance that has him seeing rats. She wants one thing from him, the location of a magic flute!

George discovers from his ghostly family that a flute can help him with the rats in the castle. When they run into trouble, George’s friend Margaret wants to help them rescue his father.  At Phillips party, Marie creates a distraction so that George can find his father or the flute.

Finding his father, they also discover even more magic and wonderment that can help them. The search brings them all to the throne room as Queen Charlotte decides to take matters into her own hands. That is until help comes from the most unlikely of places as morning comes and the reality of it all comes home for Marie.

It is true magic that breaks the spell!

Lionsgate is a global leader in motion picture production and distribution for theatres, television, home entertainment and more. Theatre franchises include THE HUNGER GAMES, and DIVERGENT along with JOHN WICK. Now, adding this film to its 16,000-motion picture and television titles you can see everything coming soon as well as available now at http://www.lionsgate.com.

THE NUTCRACKER AND THE MAGIC FLUTE is a beautifully animated story of friendship, life and magic. All of the things we find wonderful this time of year. This is a lovely way to introduce kids to the Nutcracker adventure. The music is wonderful and adds such richness to it all.

Marie is a young girl who just wants to help her mother find an answer to their current predicament. Never in her wildest dreams did she think an adventure was going to push her in a direction of another land! Prince George is in a fight of his own for the father he loves dearly. He is skilled and knows exactly what needs to be done – but will he be able to take on Queen Charlotte?

Queen Charlotte is a hand full and determined to get what she thinks is rightfully hers.

Each character has his/her part to play and even the ostrich Red Beak, who would rather put his head in a thimble to avoid problems, discovers he can be strong when it is needed. Curly is a character that provides really silly but good one-liners and keeps everyone on track.

It is a story of love, friendship, loyalty and devotion to those they love. All of those qualities are so wonderful and the characters have us cheering for them every step of the way. This film had my granddaughter captivated from start to finish. She was fascinated with each one and wanted to know if there were stuff animals available for each one of them.

Spend some time together with the family experiencing the story that has captivated us all for generations!

In the end – their adventure is filled with magic!

Topic Brings the Finale to THE ACCIDENTAL WOLF

Jeri Jacquin

Currently on the streaming service Topic from writer/director Arian Moayed are the last four episodes of the amazing series THE ACCIDENTAL WOLF.

Katie (Kelli O’Hara) is still in search of the woman named Tala. The woman who called begging for help sending Katie on a whirlwind of family drama, people chasing her and ending up in dark places. Husband Brad (Mike Doyle) is making her personal life difficult and now, he has told everyone that Katie has been kidnapped.

Katie’s mom Nancy (Judith Ivey) is keeping granddaughter Mary safe as she waits with anxiety to find out where her own daughter is. What they all do not know is that Katie is with T (Marsha Blake) and they are getting help from the most unlikely person. They are still running and exhausted but they are so close to the answers.

The story unfolds and begins to piece together how Katie became involved, what T’s role in all of this is, who is helping her find answers and, most of all, will Tala ever be found?

O’Hara as Katie is on the run with T but with each step she takes, the answers slowly start to come. The change in this character from season one to season three is a woman who no longer allows people to dictate to her, that includes her husband and father-in-law. Both of these men want to use the situation to their political advantage instead of believing that Katie has pure motives to now help T and still find Tala. I have enjoyed watching O’Hara take her character and give her everything strong and empowered.

Blake as T might not have been able to talk but her emotions are very clear. From a bit of fear to standing up for Katie, there was no mistaking her own strength in wanting to bring to the attention of the world what has happened not only to her, but other women as well.

Ivey as Nancy is another female character that starts off with a mass number of insecurities and anger, but when Katie is being lied about and used, Mama bear comes out fighting. I love when she takes on Brad and his father because that’s exactly what I would do.

Doyle as husband Brad is about to discover that the wife he once had is gone. Trying to control the situation, he soon discovers he is in control of nothing. Doyle gives his character narcissism that is brought on by the way he was raised because, like father like son.

Other cast includes Bisserate Tseggai, Michael Chernus, Hend Ayoub, Aasif Mandvi, Zainab Jah, Joe Mantello, Frank Wood, Paul Sparks, Judith Light, James Naughton and Sahr Ngaujah.

Season 3 includes the episodes Found, Hand in Hand, Future of Angels and The Last Gate.

Topic is the boundary-pushing streaming service for thrillers, mysteries, dramas and documentaries from around the world, serving viewers who crave entertainment beyond the mainstream. Whether it’s a Nordic-noir crime thriller (The Killing), a back-stabbing, an Italian political drama (The Miracle), or a mind-blowing supernatural mystery from Russia (Dead Mountain), Topic expands your view of the world. For more of what Topic has to offer please visit www.topic.com.

Executive producer Damon Owlia says of the series, “In all its versions, THE ACCIDENTAL WOLF has been rendered with empathy, gratitude, and a belief that there’s a way to keep building deepening this story. Season 3 continues in this tradition through the generosity and resilience of a special community of artists. Central to all of this happening is Arian’s preternatural ability as a storyteller to allow human beings to feel seen, heard and understood.”

The wrap up of THE ACCIDENTAL WOLF is so good on many levels. Not only does it tell the story we didn’t know from the beginning, but it allows us to see Katie finally proves to everyone that there was a call for help and that more than just Talla needed that help. So many reached out along the way because they believed she could help.

Katie is a character that starts out very insecure and believing she was not good enough for her own husband let alone be a good mother. Brad continually pushed those beliefs on Katie, she could never have imagined that one phone call would change her life in such a drastic way.

Best of all, this story is wrapped up in a way that is full of twists that I just loved. THE ACCIDENTAL WOLF is truly a series worth binging now that they are all available on Topic. Follow Katie and T on the journey to answers and especially the question of who is Talla?

In the end – she is the accidental wolf!

The Chase is on with SEE HOW THEY RUN

Jeri Jacquin

Available on all platforms from director Tom George and Searchlight Pictures is the mystery, thriller and questions of who-dun-it with SEE HOW THEY RUN.

About to celebrate its 100th performance in 1953 London, Agatha Christie’s stage production of The Mousetrap is halted by the murder of Leo Kopernick (Adrien Brody). Entering the theatre is Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) in the company of Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) as they begin looking over the crime scene. Stoppard wants to close the show but Police Commissioner Harrold Scott (Tim Key) steps in, makes the call to keep it open and assigns Stalker to the case as well.

Searching Kopernick’s lavish room at the Savoy Hotel, the manager tells the two law enforcement officers that there was an argument with screenwriter Mervyn Cocker-Norris (David Oyelowo). Admitting to the argument, Mervyn says there was a plain woman who came to the hotel with Kopernick’s son. It also becomes clear that people are being blackmailed, arguing over film rights, unfaithful marriages and another murder at the theatre – well, it would drive any Inspector to drink!

When a suspicious invitation to Agatha Christie’s (Shirley Henderson) home brings the group together, it is a night of flashing lights and an end only the author could have ever wanted.

Rockwell as Inspector Stoppard is a man who is use to doing things his own way. Methodical and talking his way through things, he is about to be challenged by a newbie to the investigation. Rockwell is calm, cool and listens to everything everyone says keeping the investigation moving along. Taking his character through the paces, I just love Rockwell’s handling to it all with disinterest and a drink occasionally.

Ronan as Constable Stalker is all over the place! From writing everything down to saying what ever comes into her head, this character certainly had my head spinning. I enjoyed her performance so much and mainly because she is just trying to fit into a profession that certainly wasn’t open-armed to women being an Inspector. Plus, she’s just an awesome actress.

Oyelowo as Cocker-Norris has no problem telling everything he knows because there is literally a lot to tell. Brody gets his moment on stage as Kopernick and the character’s offstage antics are well done. Brody proves he can play serious roles as well as fast paced comedy.

Shout out to Henderson playing Agatha Christie. What an awesome chance to play a woman who gets a chance to be a part of her own murder mystery. Henderson wraps herself up in the character and it is so much fun.

Other cast include Ruth Wilson as Petula Spencer, Reece Shearsmith as John Woolf, Harris Dickinson as Richard Attenborough, Charlie Cooper as Dennis Corrigan, Lucian Msamati as Max Mallowan, Pippa Bennett-Warner as Ann Saville, Pearl Chanda as Sheila Sim, Paul Chahidi as Fellowes, Sian Clifford as Edana Romney, and Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as Gio.

Searchlight Pictures is responsible for such films as SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, THE SHAPE OF WATER and THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI. They have an extensive film library as well as documentaries, scripted series, and limited series. For more information, please visit www.searchlightpictures.com.

Bonus Features include SEE HOW THEY RUN Behind the Curtain – Hear from the talented filmmakers and cast as they pull back the curtain on the filmmaking process which had its unique challenges and rewards. Take a look at the special access to famous locations as well as the care and detail used to create them.

SEE HOW THEY RUN is for those who love mystery, murder and mayhem all in one film. The 1950’s setting is everything I want to see in an Agatha Christie film bringing the viewer into the time period. The costuming is equally strong and I do have to admit I have a thing for red lipstick, pinned up hair, stockings with lines down the back and dresses that are just so beautiful.

Rockwell and Ronan are wonderful together and kept my attention from start to finish. They bounce off of each other so superbly. That makes the story even more wonderful as they continue through the film talking out their suspicions – even if Constable Stalker can sometimes take it off the rails.

So, get that bucket of popcorn ready, sit back and figure out for yourself of who-dun-it!

In the end – it is the greatest murder ever staged!

They are MENDING THE LINE

Jeri Jacquin

From director Joshua Caldwell and writer Stephen Camelio along with ArtImage Entertainment, August Point Productions and CKM Entertainment is the film MENDING THE LINE.

Colter (Sinqua Walls) has just experienced the destruction of war in Afghanistan and is now going through rehabilitation in a VA facility in Montana. Trying to gather himself into the man he once was is proving difficult. Under the care of Dr. Burke (Patricia Heaton), Colter makes it clear that he wants to return to military service.

Understanding that her patient needs something to help give him peace, she suggests he meet with Ike Fletcher (Brian Cox). Fletcher is a grumpy fly fisherman who has no use for modern technology of any kind and hates the nonsense that goes with being around a lot of people. The one person he can tolerate is long-time friend Harrison (Wes Studi).

The one thing the two men share in common is fly fishing. The graceful and quiet time becoming centered on one thing, the flowing river and fish in front of them. When Colter shows up at Fletcher’s door, he is not happy and makes it very clear. When Fletcher comes around a bit, he tells Colter to sober up and do recon on fly fishing.

That sends Colter to the library where he meets Lucy (Perry Mattfeld), a librarian who has issues and trauma as well. Giving the soldier books on fly fishing, he becomes intrigued but not so much when Fletcher has him stocking shelves and doing errands around his fishing business. There is a moment when Colter lets it be known he has had enough – Fletcher takes him to the river.

It is at the river that the two men find a connection in the beauty and flow of the water.

Walls as Colter is a man who had enduring the physical and emotional trauma of war. Trying to find peace has been difficult, especially every time he deals with the struggle of physical therapy, it reminds him of everything. Walls gives the performance every gambit of emotion one would expect of a soldier returning from hell. He has tender moments that seep its way in until the truth character of Colter becomes truly clear.

Cox as Fletcher has a reputation of being such a consummate actor playing some of the grumpiest characters that I’d personally never want to mess with. My favorite currently is that of Logan Roy in the hit series SUCESSION. In this film, his grumpiness is based in the same mire that Colter finds himself in. It is only in the river that Fletcher finds moments of peace and now he is sharing that with another who needs it desperately. Well done Mr. Cox, well done.

Mattfeld as Lucy is a librarian dealing with her own trauma of losing someone to war. Meeting Colter sort of sets off a bit of standoffishness but the more she learns about the soldier, the softer she becomes wanting to help him find the peace she is also searching for.

Studi as Harrison is the one man who doesn’t tolerate much from Fletcher. He pushes for his friend to help Colter and makes a deal that kind of goes wrong – but ends up being very right. It is good to see Studi on screen again.

Heaton as Dr. Burke knows that her patient is not even close to being ready to return to active duty. Knowing that she has one last chance to reach Colter, she turns to a friend who can understand what is possible for them both. I like Heaton’s choice of role and it is well done.

Other cast include Irene Bedard as Mrs. Redcloud, Julian Works as Ram, Chris Galust as Kovacs, Michaela Sasner as Ruth, Pressly Coker as Blitz, Gabriel Clark as Blitz Dad, Tristan Thompson as McDowell, Phaedra Nielson as Martha and Josef Patterson as Death Star.

The film is the Official Selection of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, Official Selection of the Port Townsend Film Festival, Official Selection of Telluride, Official Selection of IF4, Official Selection of The 41st Northwest Filmmakers Festival, People’s Choice Award at Banff Mountain Film Festival and Peoples Choice Winner of the 5 Point Film Festival.

MENDING THE LINE is a story of faith, hope, pain, suffering, humanity and the peace that comes with a river. The relationship between Colter and Fletcher starts out with hardness because each is protecting their own traumas. The only way that works is if the façade on the outside is tough with sharp edges.

In the case of both men, it is understandable but it also stops them from being a part of the larger world. Fletcher knows this to be true since he has been escaping it the longest but there is something about Colter that intrigues the elder warrior. There is a coming together that begins to happen and it is based on the simplest of things that life has to offer.

I truly enjoy the film and it is because of Cox and Walls, two fine actors who clearly embraced their characters and found the best and worse both had within themselves. The healing that happens is truly moving to see on the screen.

In the end – their healing is on the fly!

He is the SHADOW MASTER

Jeri Jacquin

Currently in theatres and soon to Digital from writer/director Pearry Reginald Teo and Saban Films comes the story of the SHADOW MASTER.

In the ravages of an apocalyptic world, An (DY Sao) is wandering the streets looking for a place to light. Hearing over the radio that a building is looking for a night watchman, An meets Boon-Nam (Craig Ng) who hires him to protect the people living in the building and especially they children.

Benison (Eric Gay Jr.) and his mother Janett (Luciana Faulhaber) try to help An understand what is happening around the building. The young boy is especially afraid for his best friend Dylan (Dylan Walton) and wants An to help protect him.

Discovering the band of terrorist responsible, he is brutally killed. That is not the end of it as something supernatural decides it is not his time and he rises again with powers that will make the world shake. An now knows that his mission in life is something totally different as he becomes the unlikely hero of a city that desperately needs one.

Sao as An is a quiet man who is just looking for a safe harbor to live in. Finding the building needing a watchman, its food and shelter that makes it easy to accept the job. Sao gives us the loan man who is more than he seems. Once he is reborn, there is nothing that won’t stop him from finding those responsible for hurting the children and terrorizing the city. I enjoyed his performance very much and his martial arts definetly makes the film thrilling.

Ng as Boon-Nam sees something in An from the moment they meet. He is a bit of a character but he also understands how the world around him works so the building is what matters. Faulhaber as Janett is just trying to take care of her son in a world that gives up nothing and takes everything.

Other cast includes Layton Matthews as Det. Russells, Brian Le as Samael, Anna Harr as Dewitt, Morgan M. Younge as Charlotte, Dylan Walton as Dylan, Alex Farnham as The Lich Knight, Daniel Mah as Gabriel, Lucy Akers as Lucy, Camilo Gonzalez as Triad, Pearry Reginald Teo as Hanuman, and Dezzaray Stephens as The Oracle.

Saban Films was launched in 2014 and has built an impressive slate of high-quality feature films distributed with partner Lionsgate. Focusing on talent-driven films, the company looks at projects in all stages of production to be released across multiple platforms. Films such as SISTER OF THE GROOM, FATMAN and BREACH are part of the wonderful Saban slate, and more information can be found at www.sabanfilms.com.

SHAWDOW MASTER sets up the story of a man who is honestly minding his own business, just trying to survive when the job living with a roof above his head tempts him off the streets. The apocalyptic setting brings the story a starkness with the fear of everyday survival.

Writer/director Pearry Reginald Teo uses the setting to create a world of brutality but, with the help of An, a bit of hope with something supernatural. The martial arts bring the skills and choreography that can be compared with THE RAID: Redemption and ONG BAK.

In the end – his rebirth is their impending death!
